Hi! This yarn I used was pretty close to a #6 yarn, so if you can get the same gauge I would think you could do it! Try with the same hook size I used and see if you can get the same gauge (8 sts and 12 rows = 4″ (10cm) in waistcoat st with larger hook)

Yes. You can use #6 Super Bulky yarn using a 10 mm hook and an 8 mm hook. The gauge and comfort level will change depending on the hook size. If you're making mittens for a child, use two smaller hooks.

It's just where you put the hook. For the waistcoat stitch, you are actually working into the loop of the stitch made in the previous row, so it looks a bit more like knitting
