I may have to pick this up now. The control scheme reminds me of my favorite shmup - Firepower 2000 (SNES). Probably one of the best SNES shmups that flew under the radar. It's the 3rd in the Silkworm series. If you haven't played it I highly recommend it. I'd dig into it but I'm sure you can look it up or get a copy for pretty cheap now.

Glad someone reviewing this game mentioned the controversy with Germany as the good guys.

I find the 2 player co-op is what makes FP 2000 shine. Many good memories of me and a buddy tearing it up. I was always the Jeep because he just couldn't wrap his head around the controls :D

Double stick?! No! No way!! Please! This game is meant to be play with an arcade stick. Playing it with the double stick feature kill all the fun (and believe me, I have tried playing with the double stick :P) since the thing that makes the games good is the ackward control sheme of the helicopter... The only thing I can actualy reproach is the missile option being too powerfulll (or the Rocket/vulcan being too slow/weak) I think the game deserves more than 3.5... But that's only my opinion

Why is this show so god damn awesome. That is all I needed to know, I was aware of this games existence but really had no idea where to get it. Regardless even if it isn't the freshest or most innovative shoot'em up experience, it is another shoot'em up that has a physical release which unfortunately is very rare these days, so I definitely will be taking the opportunity to pick this up. The only question, is it only available on amazon.com or amazon.ca or both.

Good review, good points about the visuals. I love the effects and how the explosions move around the smoke, but the general color palette is pretty drab. Though I guess this makes sense, since it seems like they were going for a more realistic setting.

Picked this up recently dirt cheap. I'm going to have to give it a go!

The lack of score-based extends stems from the original concept that the remaining number of extends effects the player's Contribution Bonus multiplier at the end of the level: (n+1) x 20,000 -- assuming a 100% ratio where 'n' is the number of times the player has died. This is why optimal scoring in the game requires a double suicide in the first level and then proceeding through both loops on the remaining life.

I've seen two separate copies of this game with some nasty sound glitches D= My own physical edition, and a PSN version at my friend's place.. In both games the music cuts out and horrible glitchy sounds happen during the Stage 4 boss. has anyone else noticed this? is there some way of avoiding it?

I don't know for the PS3 version, but the Xbox360 suffer not such problem... Maybe they screwed something with the localisation :/

Have this game on 360, also tried the PS3 version at my friend's house. The 360 doesn't have the excessive slowdown that the PS3 does. This makes it much more fun on the 360, I encourage anyone who's tried it just on the PS3 to give the 360 version a spin if they have the chance.

Great review as always Serraxor...but I beg you, please find the time to review a personal fav of mine, Raystorm. You an do a 1 / 2 punch reviewing the original PS1 release (the first Working Designs PS1 game to boot), and the HD remake on PSN.

Disagree with you guys thinking the graphics are "drab". I think it's a great choice for realism and atmosphere. The explosion effects really stand out on this muted palette as well.

This game kicks ass, one of the best shmups ever with a soundtrack to match, I have the XB360 and PS3 versions, XB360 performs better. And who cares about the story in a shmup? I certainly don't anyway. The palettes are muted, but by design, the visuals are stunning throughout I think.

This game does indeed kick ass... on the Dreamcast. It performs insanely well with very little slowdown comparotively speaking. Also worth noting: it's not so much the story, rather the subtext of playing as an allegory of a specific "axis power" (we all know the one) in an attempt to rise back to power.

When I get the Dreamcast version the mail I will let you know if it truly has no slowdown in single and multiplayer but the PS3 slowdown was only really a problem in multiplayer! I would like to get the Xbox 360 version to truly see if that version has no slowdown but even though the Pal version is cheap but the Japanese physical release not so much so might have to pass on that version short of scoring a Pal 360 for cheap!

Hey serflash, if you don't have the dreamcast version, I suggest you play that version because it runs better. I am enjoying the dreamcast version. According to an interview that I found in Shmuplations, the reason why there is alot of slowdown in Under defeat HD is because of hardware differences with the dreamcast and the X360 and ps3. the Dreamcast has a powerVR GPU and it was hard to emulate with the current gen consoles. anyway good review.
@StudioMudprints10 жыл бұрын
Good that the DC version runs better. I may get it eventually. Also, please keep in mind, this was a review looking at the PS3 version specifically not as a general Under Defeat review.
