Interesting chioice for eating on the train. What you ate was mochi (pounded sweet rice) covered with mashed azuki red beans cooked with sugar. It is eaten as a desert or snack, one piece at a time. The whole box is not meant to be eaten in one sitting. If you drink green tea with it, it is pretty tasty. I am really enjoying your adventures in Japan. In two weeks, I will be in Japan...can't wait!

Does Google translate translate the words in the paper? That would be super helpful! Not sure how anyone travelled before these tools, especially Google maps!!

@@angelaquesnel7546 He was holding the paper sideways actually, because traditional Japanese is written vertically and read from right to left! Which is why the kids' books he found at Disney were "flipped" R > L and the text was also vertical/top to bottom. With some screenshotting/angle finagling I'm sure the text can be read!

You're such a trooper, Chris. Being wet for a whole day, or more, rides closed, being alone, tired, don't know what you're eating, probably malnourished. Little helper hint: Google translate does an ok job at digitally reading Japanese script. Just scan the written characters and let it do the work. Safe travels coming home. You are awesome!

I appreciate these videos as someone who has done a lot of traveling alone. It can be exciting and incredible to build new memories, and also feel isolating. And there’s nothing wrong with experiencing and showing all of the range of emotions that travel experiences bring us. I am so grateful to have collected my own experiences when I could, now that I no longer can. When you get home, and for years to come, these funny food experiences with gray skies and your spare eyeglasses will become good memories. Thank you for letting us laugh and bringing us along. I promise, you will eventually laugh too.

Chris, what you got first for lunch was "bota-mochi" (also called "ohagi") it's very soft mochi (rice cake) with mashed red beans around it. It's considered a dessert and typically eaten with green tea. "Green Car" is the former first class, now business class; the "Gran Class" is the new first class. You were lucky to see Mt Fuji since often it is clouded over. Tokaido Shinkansen which you rode on is not maglev. That's the Chuo Shinkansen which will hopefully come on line in 2027. Anyway, appreciating your videos! (Yes, You are awesome, too!)

It's Akafuku. Similar to Botamochi but personally I think it has more of mochi texture to it.

It's not that hard to navigate in Japan if you look up your train station in advance enough. There's English everywhere. I went on my own with a few words of Japanese and no wi-fi and I was fine. It's all about the prep.

Lol… step 1: ALWAYS have Google Translate on your phone. You can point the camera on your phone at anything and it will translate it in the picture! It’s also great for language as you can type anything you want in English and it will sound it out in Japanese for you. We spent about 2 - 3 months on tour in Europe last year and being in a different county every day. It was invaluable! Just point it at a menus and Voila!

I’m sorry, I was laughing at you eating the mochi. I grew up in Hawaii and we ate this a lot. It was purple because of the azuki bean. I can imagine viewers not familiar with this food we’re grossed out by the ooey gooey aspect of it. It more of a dessert. Glad you found something else to eat for your lunch. Loving your travels abroad to Japan. It’s such a lovely country. Can’t wait to see your review of the capsule hotel. I’m 6ft tall, so I know you are much taller than I.

I'm glad that you made it to Japan. I hope your challenges didn't sour you on the country, because it really has a lot of amazing stuff to offer. I hope there is a next time for you. I will say it's so much easier (and more fun) when you have someone either local or experienced with Japan who can help guide you through it, at least until you have a few trips under your belt. It would be cool to do a collaboration with a Japan-based KZbinr so you can get some insight into various things, and also get exposure to other viewers who may be interested in what you do.

Awesome you got to see Mount Fuji, its known as a shy mountain. When I was out there I took a day trip out to see it. So awesome and a wonderful experience. That first thing you ate, have no clue what it was, sorry. I had that problem too, finding my right line to take. Once I found it it was easy but finding it was hard. A couple of times some people saw me lost and pointed me in the right direction.
