You offer a great service to your viewers with videos like this. There are many folks who can't afford to spend $500 to $1000 dollars for a brand new, high end bushcraft/survival system. It's good to have someone who reaches so many people, to share the common sense approach. Thanks brother and keep up the good work.

All I can add, is the single edged axe, you also have a hammer. As for a saw, and thanks for talking about that. A small Drywall saw, very handy. Also Stanley, who makes tools, at one time made a small folding saw, that used sawzall blades, that you change out with a screwdriver. And you can carry extra blades in the handle, but only up to the six inch blades I think. As for a knife, I have the Condor Hudson Bay knife.

Dave, my dad got one of those Old Hickory butcher knives at a soup kitchen he volunteers at about a year ago. Really old - beautiful patina on it. I made him a leather sheath for it and he absolutely loves that knife. I have to admit, it is a great knife and the blade design on his is very useful.

The leather 7-inch Ka-Bar sheath (under $10 on Amazon) fits the Old Hickory 7-inch butcher knife perfectly -- stitched and riveted, with a tie-down hole at the bottom. My two vintage OHs stay in even when turned upside down and shaken.

I love these videos. they really show us all what you can do with your money with things you may already have (pliers & saw etc). many times companys use backpacking/bushcraft as a marketing tool to get you to buy their product and mark up the price when you already have the common sense tool in your garage.

Dave, on the small saw what I like to use is a long sawzall blade then wrap the back half of it with cordage till it fits my hand. That way it's duel purpose and I know you love multipurpose so I had to share.

I am partial to my Corona professional folding pruning saws, they are very similar to your Laplander folding saws that you have mentioned before. They come in 7" and 9" blades, have red handles, and I have climbed trees with one for years. They are extremely sharp, have red handles, and run around $15.

Love all your videos Dave. I would add that for saws I carry a small hand saw that our local gardeners use on a daily basis. I bought one and granted it was 27 dollars but level of sharpness is amazing and they actually do last very well. The sharpness reduces the amount of energy needed and they weigh basically nothing and yet tough. The maker is Barnel and i've used it repeatedly and works very well if your energy is low. I just wanted to throw that in. Works great in desert regions.

Hey Dave. Thought I would share something similar to that German knife with interchangeable blades. It's made by Case. It's called the XX-Changer. You can get it in different materials and with anything from saw to filet blades. Haven't tried it personally but seems real nice and made in the USA. Maybe not common man but could be common sense.

Dave, I would like to make a couple of recommendations to the list if I could please. For 84 cents, I bought a Fiskars Nyglass composite garden trowel for small digging tasks. It weighs hardly nothing, it appears to be very durable, and it has a hollow handle for storing fishing kit or micro inferno. Secondly, at Dollar General, they sell a folding saw for $4.00! From test on other KZbin videos, the Dollar General folding saw is supposed to do well. I also bought a Fiskars folding saw for $12.

Have been thinking about this series for a couple of hours now and a couple of conversations on another forum, and have a great suggestion. At the end of the series could you please put a pack together using gear shown in the series and go on an over night? You could even tie in a couple of the other series you are working on such as the " By the Waters Edge" and the "Camp Cooking" series. Hike into a stream or river edge or lake shore, set up camp, catch some fish and cook'em. Just a suggestion

with the pliers, I still prefer good vice grips. they need to wire cutting option(most I've seen do). the reason I like them is the progressive stepping down you can do with them, if I need to cut some decently large wire for some reason, I can progressively cut it down by cutting, unlocking the vice grips, tightening down and cutting again. vice grips are indispensable items for a multi tool replacement. side cutters or "electrician pliers" are great too though.

There is a an option for the butcher knife made by a company called "GreenRiver". They are around the same price range as well and made in the USA. Good vid Dave!

Another great video. I have also personally been intensively researching and testing the absolute best quality gear that you can get on a budget. I love everything you display in this first video, but if you live in an area where you can't frequent flea markets, gun shows, and garage sales, you can still get high quality gear cheap, even with shipping costs. I can't say enough about Morakniv, they just work, and the ones with the plastic handles and 3/4 tang are damned tough!!!

One last item, that i might add Dave,.... What of taking a 'Drill Brace', with a set of Auger bits, and possibly a small draw knife?? For making say, some rustic Bush Craft style furniture, or a make shift platform to keep the camp off the ground, or a spike set for tree climbing as for hunting or to be used as an observation tower... I find that a small draw knife with a drill brace and a set of Augers to be invaluable!!... Augers of lets say 3/4" to 1 1/2" ?? Thanks.....

That german folding knife for 1/4 was a very good deal! Such antique knifes (I have one swiss knife from the 1890's) should be safed or used carefully. If I'm outdoor, I always carry my Victorinox "Rucksack". Okay, You don't get them for 3 bucks, but compared how tough and long lasting they are, they are worth every cent. The 4" auto-locking blade is brilliant and the saw is just outstanding! I've got mine since about 12 years and I'm fully content.

Hey, Dave. Great video. You are right in saying that some "bomb proof" items are more expensive and require a little discipline to save for them. Lesser items will do in the meantime, as you know. Thanks for showing the way to self-reliance without either relying on "cheap" stuff, or breaking the bank for pride's sake without getting anything more reliable.

Dave, speaking of things breaking: Could you do a video on how to replace a handle like that from scratch? I know you can make a handle for an axe with a round hole in the head by tapering a straight stick/branch/etc.... I guess you could do a square-ish version of that & maybe smooth the edges for your grip. Think that would work? Also, you could make a handle of fatwood on the ferro rod for tinder. Cut little shavings of & there you go.

I like to use a foldable saw which originally comes from gardening for cutting branches. It's blade is about 11" long and I already comfortably felled 8" diameter trees with it. For anything bigger I would anyway need an axe. As it's foldable it takes very little space and I can even keep it in one of my trousers' leg pockets for some time. Unfortunately a good one is not cheap. I spent about $40.

I know it is a little more expensive but what do you think about the Glock field knife? It is full tang, comes with a bomb proof sheath (made from the same polymer as Glock pistol frames), decently thick in my opinion (1/4" at the tange), and made from spring steel so it is less likely to chip or crack. Just wondering because I bought one years ago when I was doing SAR and I am thinking about using it in a survival kit

This is a great video Dave, those tools will get the job done, except you forgot one thing. Keeping them sharp in an extended period of time situation. Maybe it's just me but I consider a sharpener more important than pliers, but having both would be the best. Get these for starters but save up and buy the best and lightest you can get, at 57 I can tell you the weight thing can become an issue. If I remember correct Dave is 49 now & there is a difference at 57.

Old Hickory undoubtedly is fantastic. Mora knives are great also. But an unusual suggestion I'd like to make is to check out Chinese wholesale websites, I know that a lot of people are against this but a lot of the knives you find in walmart or dollar stores are going to be from China I can almost g uarantee it. I recently picked up a full tang 9cr (440c) steel fixed blade with a leatehr sheath for $15 +shipping from aliexpress. For simple items like tins and stuff you can find great deals IMO.

there are handles that accept the replaceable reciprocating saw blades for very low cost. I rehab used axes as a hobby. the most expensive used axe that I paid for was 3 dollars. Except for the pre 1900 double-bit all of them are tools that I use. Menards has a new 12 dollar shinglers hammer with a 3 1/2 inch axe face and a 14 inch handle. That is my new tool box hatchet because I can knock in fencing staples with the hardened poll end.

I love when I watch your videos and I see a suggestion I sent you being implemented. Makes me feel all special and fuzzy inside, lol.

Leatherman Wave. I know it's a little on the pricy side, but it has your small saw, as well as many other uses.

I have always liked the common man videos great job . I honestly can say that some of the older tools I have hold up much better than newer versions I have and if you dont mind looking you will come across things like the old axe heads and knives. One often overlooked area I see is not something that is as much fun as tools or knives but is really important is clothing , I would really like to see a pathfinder edition video on common man clothing that is bombproof .
