"Keto or Vegan?"
"What about carbs, I've heard they're no good?"
"My friend swears by fasting..."

In this episode JT and Joey discuss the most common mistakes they see amongst the BJJ community. This episode is not so much about WHICH diet is the best one, but more about the broader concepts that help you to eat in a way that is:

I started to do 3 day water fasts and literally when i finish it my respect for my main meals and the quality i put into them goes up. Then strangely enough, i don't actually desire my old favourite bad snacks. So now i actually go no i don't want that chocolate but what happens now is on occasion i actually make my own cakes, brownies etc. Yes i know what goes in them but it feels so much better in every way 😊🙏🏡

I hardly disagree. It is very easy to sustain a vegan diet. And usually people who are changing tend to be more healthy than before. If you are high carb vegan, yes you have to eat more. But not like you have to eat 2 times more. My mug of oat meal is like 600 ckal.

Im glad it has been easy for you, I have to say that the fact that so many people go from omnivorous to vegan and back again tells me that its probably hard for most people to sustain.

@@nicktarver2551your personal experience are not hard facts. most people have hard time sustain any meaningful change in their life. Most people quit from bjj. But i know many vegans they don't have hard time to cook and eat.

Guys, I love stuff you put out on BJJ. Thanks for sharing your experience. However, your information on carbohydrates is incomplete. I've been low carb for years, I'm in ketosis on and off. I fast when I train as well. We can debate this on and on. I'll just pick on one thing you stated at 10:35. "The brain can not use fat as fuel because it can't cross the blood brain barrier. So we need glucose". The first part, Correct! 1.The brain does NOT need glucose, ketones are another brain fuel and in fact it's more efficient and cleaner. It comes from the body breaking down fat. Which can cross the blood/brain barrier. 2. Our bodies can create glucose from the liver. Eating certain carbohydrates to be converted to focus should merely supplement that need. Am I saying carbohydrates are horrible? No. Especially not for athletes who are training. But I wouldn't open the flood gates back up for carbohydrates. I mostly wanted to correct that glucose being the only brain fuel part. Thanks

Your body can burn ketones while on a no to low carb diet.. when I go on keto or carnivore after the first two weeks I have a lot of energy and I can think alot more clearly. I also train BJJ 5-6 days a week , I lift 4-5 days a week and I do Muay Thai 2 times a week and I have been on less than 20 grams of carbs per day.

Can definitely work for some, however ketones are definitely not the bodies preferred fuel choice.

I've been skipping breakfast for years. Whenever I eat breakfast, I get unreasonably hungry before lunch. I appreciate the advice and I'm going to figure out how to integrate carbs (I'm low carb now, mostly just fruit) but it's so hard figuring out what's right for me because it honestly feels like there's 20 different body types out there that respond best to a particular type of "diet," and add on to whether you're trying to lose weight, maintain, engage in moderate exercise, or high intensity exercise, and how often and for how long.... I'm absolutely gassed after BJJ and I think it's the lack of carbs. I'm trying to figure out the best ones. I think I have a gluten insensitivity because I get bloated and feel like shit after eating it, but I'm going to try to work in other carbs. Rice, potatoes, corn, beans.

I will say, I solved my hydration issue. I was crushing a Stanley 2L of water during and shortly after class, constantly breaking during class for a re-drink. I drink about 20oz of Gatorade Zero Grape (elixir!) and I'm pretty much good for the class as long as I'm not already dehydrated. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend drinking a sports drink before class.

Vegan diet helps my recovery sooo much. Flax seed and b12 supplement and I’m good to go. I can out work anyone in my gym as a white belt when it comes to cardio. However I do have a wrestling background and trained for many many years
