I really appreciate this video, glad I stumbled into this video a couple days ago. I went ahead and pulled a Sport Auto 540i rear end from the junkyard. Monkey see monkey do, just need to order the Wavetrac. The Auto 540 car I pulled the parts from had Dinan Sway bars, total cost for Diff/ Axles/ 1/2 DS/ Dinan Sways I paid $250.

Did your auto 530i have a welded diff?
@nopenope65467 ай бұрын
Frist, thank you for this video! I managed to get a 2.81 ratio diff, and since pelican and another bmw dealership cancelled orders for lack of availability on the output flanges we wound up getting from an e38 740i (which according to multiple bmw parts look up sites appears to be the same part). (hopefully someone else can also confirm).

M5 axels on parts geek are hardened for 74$ each. They look like 540 axels to me , but I'm going to try one. The size difference between them and my M5 axels may help with wheel hop. My e39 touring has a built s52. Makes 608 on pump /18ish psi. Who knows when I run flex with the e60+ map turned on 24 psi . (Ms43 + 3584 compressor on a precision 66mm turbine) right side m5 axel likes to quit. M5 axel is thicker on the shaft but the ends are the same as the 540 as far as i can tell.
@Drew-i8gАй бұрын
Watching this from Colorado (I live by Vermont) Denver beer and oil tossed me free extra 540 sport axels. with a freshly rebuilt e46 m3 trans I bought cheap. No more terrible seems legit one piece shaft on my 320. (The one they sold me with a critical speed way below redline) soon as I get home where my M5 driveshaft is it's all going in. I just need a axel swap NOW. Can't find any definitive axel swap on a touring. I will flip a coin and either pull the inner control arm bolts OR upper control arms to get the axel in/out. Hope I choose right.
@spankranchgarageАй бұрын
Back when it still had I6 axles I could swap them just barley without removing anything else. They would compress just enough. I think its the same for these bigger axles but I cant remember, because I havent had them out in a while.
@Drew-i8gАй бұрын
@@spankranchgarage thanks for the reply. Makes sense to me. I think I will pull the top control arms at the hub. I have adjustable arms , and I have adjusted them more than a few times. Should be easy enough.

@ #SpankRanchGarage. Great video. It's very informative. The topic is rarely talked about. I have a few questions for you if you'd care to hear. It's regarding the rear differential/rear axles and the output flanges/stub shafts on my E53 X5 N62. My X5 shares alot of parts with the E39 and also the E60. A few other models as well. BMW in general uses parts from many different models to make a single vehicle. Ingenuitive. But a pain in the ass sometimes when trying to locate the correct part. I could use a little help and some insight from someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

So did you get a completely custom driveshaft or was the driveshaft shop able to move the splines?

I made my own by combining a 6cyl shaft and a v8 shaft. I made a video on it. It’s not for everyone but it had been working great for me with no problems

U missed the pre 96 e38 diff. 3.15 ratio and was a x-over yr so it got the 210 ring and pinion and will take a 210mm lsd(e23,e32,e39m5, e46m3). Gotta use the 540 rear cover, axels and driveline. HAS to be pre 96 build date so make sure to vin check build date.

Probably a dumb question but im assuming the 540i output flanges wont fit into the i6 diff?
@spankranchgarage2 ай бұрын
That is correct. You could make new flanges and make it work with the I6 diff if needed. I have a video where I do that on a subaru transaxle but the process is the same
@SirWilliam92Ай бұрын
@@spankranchgarage cool, thanks for the response I'll check that out. Just trying to weigh my options and be prepared. I already swapped the gearing, input flange, and installed a helical lsd in my i6 diff so I'd like to stick with it if possible. Haven't snapped an axle yet at mid 400s whp but I'm also not drifting it or launching on sticky tires. I'll be making 600+whp soon and I figure these axles will throw in the towel either way.

What's up with thoes subframe bushings? I don't recognize them. My wagon I found a decent deal on a complete m5 rear end. M5 axels weigh SOOOO MUCH. Now I have a few e39 5 series subframes... only 3" wider than my e36.... 1.5" per side. Hmmmm

I recommend it. I broke too many axles with the 528 stuff it got really annoying.

Cool video BUT 540 axels and/or flanges are NOT the same bolt pattern as m5 axels. M5 ones are way bigger.
@spankranchgarage6 ай бұрын
Thanks. But I disagree, the axles that I speak of in this video are M5 flange pattern. Most 540I axles are NOT, but the ones in this video are. They are not super common but they do exist.

How much power are you putting down? because as far as i know those 188 driveshafts can handle quite some power atleast in e34 chassis
@spankranchgarage3 жыл бұрын
Only 400whp on pump gas. I haven't turned it up much on E85 yet. I think the combination of the welded diff, and the weight of the wagon had me breaking shafts so often
