I think it's pretty interesting. Especially the assembly cut*. They gave the alien itself a personality and the first person fish-eye lense scenes were pretty cool. The design is awesome, despite the horrid cgi. The dynamic between the prisoners with each other and with Ripley was interesting enough, and they were not entirely devoid of charisma. Feel like there is a pretty brilliant film underneath all the issues sabotaging it. The biggest thing though is the idea that the xenomorph takes on some of the genetic traits of its host. Pretty much essential to all the spin-off comics and games. * I prefer the theatrical version up through the alien birth/funeral scene. Didn't think it made any sense that Ripley was found on the beach a half mile from where the ship crashed in the middle of (water?). Also dog makes more sense than dead cow in giving it that quadrupedal predator feel.

It wasn't a daunting task to grasp that Alien 3 was mainly how the Alien had taken every possible thing from Ripley right up to taking her life. Not everything needs to have a happy, circle jerk, skipping off into the sunset ending. Its OK for a story to end, what they shouldn't have done was made Resurrection and just ended Ripley's story at Alien 3. I honestly would've loved to see the monk version of Alien 3. It sounds so different and unique. The monk literally being pulled down the toilet, by the artwork shown on screen, and just the idea of it is the kinda scene you'd see for the announcement trailer or those small snippets of people freaking out in the theatre for the TV Spots or something like that. I might be crazy to think this but I think a monk forcibly being dragged down a toilet was the inspiration for the Newborn Xenomorph being sucked out to space in Resurrection. The things I wouldn't wanna see if it was made that way: one, ditch the idea of Ripley hacking up the Chestburster and the monk taking it in his own body. And Ripley still has to die. It just sounds like the right way to end Ripley's journey. Sorry for writing a whole damn essay comment, just giving my two cents on the whole thing.

While I respect a different opinion, to me, that treatment sounded dumb as hell. It was the kind of story someone who knows nothing about filmmaking and screenplays would make. 80% of it sounded unfilmable, especially in the late 80’s/early 90’s. There was just too much going on in that story to make sense in a two hour movie. Some of it sounded pretty interesting, like setting the plot against the backdrop of a Cold War in space. Hiwever, choosing to shift the focus from Ripley to Hicks makes no sense. Why is Hicks important? Sure, he was a cool character in Aliens, but he has no importance in the overall story. He’s completely interchangeable with any of the other colonial marines characters. Aside from that, the treatment sounds like another Alien/Aliens retread, just in a different setting. There’s no arc at all. The version of Alien 3 that we got, while seemingly a retread of Alien/Aliens and as flawed as it is, at least gives the story and the character of Ripley some finality. We go from a small crew of rather helpless space truckers pitted against a single threat to a badass group of marines who are no match for this unstoppable mass force, back around to a rather helpless group of prisoners pitted against a singular threat.

There was studio interference with the script and set, and certain memorable characters were killed off. The monk planet idea is definitely a weird and interesting idea that, in a roundabout way, would’ve harkened back to the artsier roots of the first Alien. If Sigourney Weaver simply refused to return to the franchise after Aliens , one of these totally cool concept movies would probably exist
@chrisloesch18703 ай бұрын
Sigourney Weaver was part of the reason that Alien 3 was such a disaster during development, but Fox Studios had a hand in that too with the dispute over royalties. Weaver's insistence on "no guns" made it even more difficult to come up with a film where someone could overcome the Alien(s) and then her holding out until after set construction started and filming began through another wrench into the whole process.

To think, after all that script meddling - they eventually figured out Ripley’s motivation for the film: Revenge on the Company for stitching up the crew of the Nostromo (in Alien) by ensuring they never got their hands on a Xenomorph specimen. Aliens was a big-budget rehash of the first film, during which the director used the franchise and the production company’s money to try out a number of ideas he had for Avatar (when he figured cribbing the Pocahontas story was better than his “mother” idea). In doing so, he weakened the threat of the Alien species and backed the sequel’s producers into a corner, whereby they either had to repeat/escalate the combat seen in Aliens or contrive a scenario where the humans had no firearms. On balance, the “Assembly Cut” of Alien 3 suggest a superior story to the William Gibson one. Shame David Fincher never got the chance to make the film he wanted. Smartest move I think they made was killing off the survivors from Aliens. *Nobody* survives an encounter with the Xenomorph, not really - even Ripley (the main Protagonist for the series) didn’t survive two encounters. That’s your threat restored. Fucking children wanting a happy ending (the patched together family sailing off into the sunset). Do you not realise the future depicted in these films - one way or another, everyone a slave to the Weyland-Yutani Corporation - is dystopian?

@@freedomwriter9688 In Alien, a small group of people working in isolated conditions encounter a dangerous creature which kills all of them bar one, who goes back to rescue a cat. She and the cat barely escape a mining ship going thermonuclear but unbeknownst to them, the titular Alien stows away on their escape ship and has to be flushed out of an air lock before the credits roll. In Aliens a larger group of people working in isolated conditions encounter the same species as in Alien. A number of dangerous creatures wipe them out (bar one child, who miraculously survives due to a plot contrivance) along with the majority of a rescue team sent to investigate. The survivors barely escape the mining colony just before it goes thermonuclear, with the one from Alien returning to rescue the child. Unbeknownst to them a giant alien stows away and makes it to their escape ship, with the one from Alien having to flush it out of an airlock before the credits roll. Don’t tell me it’s not a rehash, just because you can’t see beyond the grander production scale of the sequel. The main difference is that the Nostromo crew were clearly set up by the Company. Burke (the “Company Man” - a mere imp of Satan) is the one depicted as being responsible for exposing the colonists and the marines to the alien species, personally wishing to gain (through recovery of a live specimen) in Aliens.

I for one hope to see some of these un-filmed scripts happen at some point, re-invisioned NOT as movies, but as triple-A video games. Plenty of them have all the necessary narrative elements, which would make the setting & story beats of a video game, quite compelling for the player. Plus, it could bring back legacy characters from the franchise (as well as create new ones) w/o having them to commit to a feature film at their current age - & having them appear as they would back then.

I've gradually come around to this idea being potentially kind of interesting. In real life, JAXA is apparently looking to loft a satellite incorporating wood in the near future. BTW, one of the ideas behind the "wooden space station" is that the monks are gradually carving out chunks of the interior to use for cooking and heating. Cinefantastique has a great article on the tortured history behind Alien3.

@@davidjames579 No idea, LOL. Interesting? Yes. Atmospheric? Yes. Logical/sensible? Perhaps - I was under the impression that the idea was that these "monks" were in a multigenerational vessel with VERY thick layers of wood. Thesuspense would come from wo "ticking clocks" - the inhabitants' own closed-loop ecosystem doomed because they are consuming it, and of course the arrival of the xenomorph and Ripley.
