Our Wyoming Life

Күн бұрын

This weekend we head down to move the bulls off of the cows and end the breeding season on the ranch. After a rain delay, we are struck with good luck and bad as life on the ranch continues the only way it knows how.

Join us on our journey as we leave a life in corporate america to come back to Wyoming and help on the family ranch.
Our Wyoming Life features our Wyoming ranch and our ranch family. Giving you a look into the workings of ranching from raising cattle to raising and harvesting crops. Erin will join you weekly out of the garden, showing you how she helps provide for our family through growing produce and selling at local farmers markets, and Mike will take you along as he tends to the animals and land of ranch, from calving to fencing to planting and harvesting hay.

My son is a 'Camp Man' at a big spread in NE New Mexico. This NE Texas girl just experienced her first 'Weaning'. It was jaw dropping to watch 10 cowboys push herds ginormous pasture to ginormous pasture and then finally into the yards where the trucks waited for the calves. Watching 500 mamas pour over the hill with dust boiling and no fence or electric line in sight gave a great visual of what life looked like 150 years ago.

All in all no farmer wants to find a dead animal. It does happen and that is part of the life we chose. I've had someone once ask if I was worried about the lost income. Folks, if money were the major concern I'd sell the farm and do something far more profitable. This is a labor of love. Sure it's our business, but it doesn't pay enough if you don't love what you are doing. Keep on smiling Mike. Looks like you are a decent fellow and a fairly good rancher.

If you think about it you've gotten off easy with just one bull down but one is better than the whole lot. We had one bull break its back coming off a heifer and another step in a ditch and twist its ankle. It's been a deathly year this one with 4 calfs killed with black leg disease. Grand vid again mike

Always hard to lose an animal. Emotionally and financially. We lost a heifer to lightning in August. She fell in the river, we didn't find her for a few days of 100°. Smelliest, most disgusting thing I've dealt with in awhile. Thanks for reminding me ranch life is worth it. You always seem so positive. All the bad has an end and swings up again.

Michael O'Connor I bet. Wow. I was in a native village in AK in August and there was a juvenile black bear dead in a small river. People had already pulled its teeth and claws. I snipped off a back claw with my leather man but that was by far the stinkiest thing I’ve ever smelt.

We had a missing steer about a month back in our west pasture herd. Found him dead after a lengthy search. Not sure what killed him but we reckon it was some sort of sickness cause even the buzzards wouldn't touch the body. Lost another 3 weeks ago after castration. It's rare to lose one that way but it can happen. If you ain't figured we raise beef cattle. Small op only bout a herd of 25 right now.

Sorry to hear about the bull, Mike. IIRC you lost a bull last year too. I noticed the Gator sitting out in the rain, and it made me think of something. Why don't they put a drain hole in the back of the seat to drain the water off. That's just plumb aggravating when your in a hurry, but have to stop and flip up the seat to drain away that 😠water. P.S. John Deere if your listening, use your head for something besides a spacer for your ears and take the lead, and fix this aggravating hassle, please. 😁
