You should test red and yellow next if you're going to continue with the Shuttle Art markers. Those are the colors that would contain cadmium, a toxic chemical used in inks and pigments. Since those markers are white label (bought from a generic factory and slapped with the buying company's label), I just don't trust that they would be completely non-toxic. Shuttle Arts may claim that, but they don't formulate the ink, and they pass on the "non-toxic" label based on trust me bro.

I don't know how true this is for all around the world. but a lot of places actually have the color pigment cadmium banned as children tend to play with markers. So there are replacement dyes. The color is often still called cadmium red even if there is no cadmium in them. I know at least a lot of art supplies here do.

The permachrome ink for color wouldn't be significantly toxic. The big issue is xylene, which is in heavy amounts on the specialized Sharpies like Sharpie Extreme. Just make sure to use the standard size ones on the eggs. Even the King and Magnum size contain more xylene. The person who was concerned about orange Sharpies may have been referring to the neon orange ones, which glow under a blacklight.

I love how casual Emily is about being bite. She's like "yeah they do that.... so anyway I was saying....." and just goes on with her day. I think that's amazing because no the bites don't really hurt but being so casual about it helps to destigmatize pet snakes as scary.

Something that just occurred to me: to the people who complained that they were testing this on "lower value" snakes. It's known that there can be issues with some morphs and hatch rates. By choosing a wild-type clutch where none of the babies will be a morph, they are avoiding some potential lurking variables.

Wasn't last year the first year of breeding at the zoo? I feel like the stress of moving was more of a cause of increased bad clutches rather than sharpie color. Sometimes things line up, but that doesn't always mean they're the causation. Just a thought!
@DRAG0NSPIRIT10 Жыл бұрын
No, 2021 was the year the snakes moved to the zoo (they moved them in right after waking them up from brumation at their house) and that was the first year breeding there, they had quite a few a bad clutches and no clutches that season. 2022 was the first brumation and breeding season at the zoo, where they had much better results. So this is the 2nd year of the snakes breeding in the zoo.

The talk about Dotti’s personality makes me think, it would be neat to get a video about the friendliest animals you guys have, and what behaviors they display that specifically qualify as “friendly,” since with naturally solitary species they don’t necessarily have a genetic propensity to want to hang out with each other OR with weird humans, and thus don’t do all the obvious things that, say, a dog or cat or blue and gold macaw might do 😁

I live in north central Iowa, like 10 miles from the Minnesota border, and when I got home from an appointment today, there was a garter snake on my front step under my door. I’m terrified of snakes to the point of almost throwing up, but when it was just sitting there staring at me, I did take a moment to appreciate all the red scales if had. Then I slithered away and I gagged. When I got inside I realized I left my sweet corn in my car and that’s where it will stay for the rest of today! I love your channel and may bring my braver grandson up to your your facility sometime. We’ll see if nana can work up the courage to bring him inside and go thru your zoo.

If the person who originally kept track of all the marker colors vs hatch rates kept track of each species as well, there might be something with differences in shell thickness that was a play. Like when the eggs sometimes become see through in spots and you can see the baby inside, maybe the thinner shell let the marker through easier.

The testing of the markers is interesting to see. I've bred and hatched Muscovy's, ducks, geese, chickens, and quail and I've been told by older breeders not to use permanent makers on eggs, that pencil is the only safe thing to mark eggs. Heck every hatching egg I've bought has been mark in pencil it is so ingrained. I've seen folks can get quite angry about it. I've seen the same thing with marking rabbit kits, and mouse pups. I've never seen data on it or were the idea ever came from. Nice to see someone testing the validity of the idea.

I have had alot of snakes and of the US native snakes, bull snakes seemed among the most intelligent and alot of personality. Three, a large male, over 6 foot long and two females, I let roam free in my bedroom for a couple years. They had an open cage with a couple inches of dry soil on it's floor were they did their business, though I had to have some newspaper along the opening to keep the dirt in and sometimes they didn't make it all the way in and that worked for that. Never had a mess anywhere in the room. Most of the time, when I came in, one or more would come and great me. Whenever I worked on something, like taking a fan apart to clean, the male would be right there watching what I was doing, his head about 6-8 inchs from my hands, very curious. At night, the male often would coil up on my chest to sleep and I often woke in the mornings with him stretched out beside me with his head perhaps on my arm and tail by my feet.

I think it would be a good experiment to try the color that previously changed over incubation- I think it was either green or red? Whichever eggs you did the pepper theme on I know had at least a few change in color. One pigment in the marker dye either dissolved in the humid incubation environment or was potentially absorbed into the egg! (as noted by another comment, could be important the shell thickness of whichever species that this was!)
