@@marazali1816 the chanty was a past time, but also something to break the monotony and increase teamwork between sailors. each song will have a main 'chorus' which is universal, but the verses and lines between the 'universal line' would be very different from ship to ship, and port to port. Some ships would even go further to change the tune. so you probably did hear a version where it was dearly rather than nearly. and further still, there are versions where there was no splicing at all =p

The lead singer is great, but props to the tenor for the amazing high-pitch harmony. I like how in the "bully down in Shinbone al" verses his voice becomes stronger and stronger, to the point that when the lyrics reach the word "alley" it completely dominates the harmony -- shadowing even the lead singer. Like at 3:13, for example.

Micheal, excuse my clumsy way English, but I come from a Spanish-speaking country; Argentina; but I feel deep ties between our cultures and the men and women of work and sacrifice from around the world. I first heard this song in the "Artfull Dodger" series, I LOVE Dikens ( I love Victor Hugo too). Both place marginal, simple and vulnerable men and women at the center of the scene. (They were mediums who channeled deep knowledge and helped society evolve). I know and love many aspects of British culture and I learned about the sacrifice of children during the industrial revolution, railway development, mining, hunger and poverty of the proletarian classes as everywhere and from the bottom of this epic of Everyday life emerges this wonderful expression of friendship, improvement and hope; WOW!!! I shake your hand from the bottom of the American continent, one day we will all hug each other in eternity.

HerdingDogRescuer heh, believe it or not, a voice cant take hours of this. it is pretty hard on the vocal chords. also tiring. low register baratone takes a lot of wind. my barbershop director (classically trained in opera but crossed over to barbershop) broke a rib coughing because his lungs / diaphram were incredibly strong.

The entire group, as well, has amazing harmony, and the ability to weave harmony and melody together so cohesively and beautifully is wonderful. Definitely one of my favorite go-to's when I'm missing the ocean and the dock-life that comes with living in a small town by the big water.
