Dogumentary TV's Living With series, explores dog breed's from a pet owner's perspective.
The Rhodesian ridgeback is a dog breed developed in South Africa. Its European forebears can be traced to the early pioneers of the Cape Colony of southern Africa, who crossed their dogs with the semi-domesticated, ridged hunting dogs of the Khoikhoi.
Today the Ridgeback is an excellent working and companion animal. The breed needs a highly engaged and active owner

@@jovelynallen5930 I am South African, had 5 ridgebacks and looking for my next baby as I type. They are incredibly intelligent and if it can protect a farmer from a lion with a ratio of 5 dogs to 1 farmer I would say its capable. They are working dogs though so dont think you get it, feed it and it sleeps all day. That will NOT work and will create an animal that seeks it own entertainment. These dogs are so clever and protective and are good with children and and and.... seriously you will never look back if you train it.

Just recently got a Ridgeback from a breeder at 8 weeks old and he is 65 pounds already at 5 months old now. This video is very accurate. They bond with one person. He is basicly my shadow. Never had a bond like this with any other breed. Update: He just turned a year old and is 115 pounds and still growing. Crazy how much attention he gets when we go out. People take pictures. They say he is the most beautiful dog they ever seen. Has a bark and a growl that would make anyone stop in their tracks. But people move to the other side of the sidewalk without him making a sound. People walking by either stop and ask questions or get out of our way. Just awesome.

A while back when I used to read electrical meters, id be happy when id get to the route with the family who had the Rhodesian Ridgeback as their pet. His name was Thor. By the second trip the dog would come out and stand up and give me a hug. The owners were amazed at how quickly the dog got used to me. Id always save their house for last so I could hang around their dog. Cant wait to get me one.

I have a male ridgeback who is everything you said about the breed. When he was still a puppy (10month old) he protected me from someone who was stalking me in the park. He read my fear and ran up to the guy at 100mph and then stopped dead still in just front of him and eyeballed him. I could see the fear in the guys eyes from a distance. I then called him back and for the first time EVER he came back to me on command. The guy ran off thinking he was a really well trained fully grown dog. He has never done anything like that since and he is now 10years old and really strong and muscular. I KNOW he is taking care of me since that time. I LOVE this breed a one person dog for sure.

Someone dumped a littler of puppies, about 7 months old, up and down the highway where I live. We ADORE our dog! The absolute best dog we have ever had; I am in my mid 50's, so that is saying a lot! When our other dog passed away, our Ridgeback was so depressed. Someone dumped a French Bulldog mix, which is very rambunxious! It keeps our Ridgeback exercised and happy. He isn't alone and loves to play with the other dog.

You shouldn't say that. It is great that your Ridgeback is working out for you but they really are not a breed for a newbie. You will come to realize that when you see other people interact with your dog. The human must be totally in touch with how the dog is feeling and most new dog owners cannot read a dog. In bad situations, the dog always comes out badly.

Jane Hyndman What do you mean by "this is not a suitable breed for a first dog? »Because this breed would suit my lifestyle perfectly! I am a sporty person (bike, paddle, hikes, walks in the forest), I live in a house with a large garden and I can take my dog to work with me ... It's been years that I learn about this breed and the more I learn, the more I am convinced. I have never adopted a dog and therefore educate dog from A to Z, but since my 15 years I very often keep dogs of different breeds (Labrador, Golden Retriever, Malinois, French Bulldog, cross sheepdog etc) and I managed to teach them all tricks and above all to make me respected. I have a "strong" character in the sense that I follow through on what I say and I know how to make myself respected (as said above). I also plan to teach puppy school (whatever breed I decide to take). Do you think that despite all this this dog would still not suit me as the first dog?
@kateb6748

Kams i have a 5 month old ridgeback puppy. If you have experience training lots of different dogs (and stubborn ones!) then a ridgeback sounds like it could be good for :) They are bred to be independent thinkers as when they’re chasing a lion they need to think for themselves and quickly, not wait for an owners command. They’re still like this today... if you want a ridgeback to do something, you need to make them think it was their idea. They can be stubborn but they’re VERY smart and loyal. I highly recommend puppy school for them. The stubborn part is why they’re not suited to new dog owners who have little experience training, as without the correct training, you may encounter some problems behavioural wise (as you would with any breed). They’re also big sooks, which can be hilarious. But they just love their owners and are loyal to them. Hope that helps!

agreed, I had twin brothers that were both " polydactyl " , six toes on each paw, got them when they were 14 weeks old and put them both down at 14 years old, they had both begun to suffer from hip displasia and it had begun to be a struggle for them to get up and make it outside to go potty. it was ripping my heart out, that was fifteen years ago and is still choking me up now to tell it, I miss my boys so bad and still think of them every single day. I do wish she had touched on the subject of health concerns a bit more though,,,Rhodesians are susceptible to a host of health concerns despite being a very hearty and all around healthy breed of dog, she was soooooo right on about intelligence, my boys were taking commands at 14 weeks and we're so incredibly eager to learn everything. I used to take them to work with me framing houses and most of the time the stairs didn't go in until we were fairly far along with the second story so both my boys taught themselves how to climb a two story ladder, because daddy working upstairs and them staying downstairs just wasn't an option to them so they corrected that quick, fast, and in a big damn hurry!

I have 2 Ridgebacks and this is spot on. Both males they get at least an hour hike everyday and when they aren't doing that they're sleeping on the couch. They want to do whatever their people are doing. Rainy Saturdays when they don't have their walk they are more than happy to watch movies on the couch with you. They are stubborn though. You have to be strong willed and consistent. The first 1.5 years were the hardest but staying the course and being consistent has brought us 2 semi well mannered confident dogs. Wouldn't change them if I could, which is good because their stubbornness would make it near impossible to change at this point.

I had a rescue Ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgeback who loved to every once in a while, lay in the backyard and sunbath for an hour or two. She hated loud noises, and was very respectful of our items, food, and space. She was a handful to leash train, I would take her running with my sturdy combat boots. I did that because they had the best traction, so I had better control if something happened. She was out ninja dog, very athletic and precise. Once when playing catch she flipped backwards all the way and landed on her paws in order to get the ball. Her tail left welts if you weren't careful. We had a coffee table at just the wrong height, she knocked things off of it all the time with her excited tail.

@@McDoodle44 I have an almost 5 month old RR pup. I have had lots of dogs over the years, large and small, this is my favourite breed so far ! I will say he is smart, but needs very consistent training. As far as taking on an RR as a first dog , I feel, if you are a confident and strong leader, then with the right handling you will have no problems. I recommend "respect training for puppies", (downloadable). I forget the name of the author, sorry. If you follow her advice from the outset and stick to it 100 % consistently you shouldn't have problems with an RR. Its all about routine and consistency and clear boundaries . The respect training turns you into a confident leader and your dog into a happy follower. Having no experience with dogs need not be a disadvantage if you stick to the script. But having said that, I work from home and do have a lot of time to put into this pup. And that's also recommended. If you're out of the house all day I would have pause for thought. They love their people. Mine is snoozing in my lap as I type this lol.

Hi! I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback now on visit.A Truck driver placed an advertisement on internet.He was looking for someone to take care in the week days.I wrote him and he and his dad and the dog came to look if it is a good place.Now 3 weeks later i have a 11 year old Rhodesian for 2,5 weeks now as a guest.My cats were the point but this is absurd.I have a very small very scared black cat.That was my big worry.Now Torro (the Rhodesian) licks him with his big tongue and after that Eleven (my little black cat) looks like me comes out of the sewer.Complete with the spikes.Eleven is half the head of Torro.They are friends now.So nice to see how they can become friends.My other cat Tiger is the man of the house.He is going out with us when we go on a late walk.He is never go out of the appartment but now he goes with us.It is hard to get him back in the house but in the end he is listening.Torro catched him the first time and brought him back with his skills.Now Tiger is free and it's up to him if he wants go back up to the appartment.The other day i went up with Torro and when i was on my balconny i saw in the dark a creature running to the front door.It was Tiger :-) I love him and i love Eleven and i love Torro. I have a question.Torro is a great and fit dog.His boss found me so he can keep Torro.But he is 11 now.What if he dies?I told the truck driver my worries and he is telling me Torro is going at least 15 and not 10/13 internet is telling me.Torro still has dreams but that worries me a little.He is very active in dreams.His breath is slow but constant.Somtimes it looks like he is eleptic.Should i worry?

Great dogumentary. A year and half ago we adopted a 7yr old RR/Lab male. He is solid light reddish brown color. His ridge only shows when excited or on alert. His only bad habit is whinning, and excessive barking when the door bell rings. Other than that he responds to the usual sit, stay, shake, come, back, off commands. So far he and the cat get along...the cat keeps him at bay. He is a good boy and we love our big lap fur baby.

Perfect description of a Ridgeback :) Nala is 2 years now and it's a blast. We have her in the office and most of the time it's np at all, all co-workers love her. She's extremely cosy and the only negative is that I let her sleep in the bed (kingsize) and I'm single, but yeat she woke me up at night, standing ontop of me and want to get under the cover :D Took a long time to get her to used to being a lone for an hour or so(gladly I got a house) while training or such. SO if you live in an apartment, prepare the neighbours :)

As far as being good family dogs, they are big and wifi knock down little kids. Our dog is a ridgeback mastiff mix rescued by a group after he had been retuned to the shelter 3 times . He was never abused and everybody loved him but they simply did not understand how to handle a large dog. We got him at age 3 and immediately bonded. We have a farm and lots of acreage. The little grandchildren had to get used to him as his size and friendliness scared them. It took about a year for the kids to totally feel comfortable with him and now they play with him. He does protect us from strangers as he has the deep mastiff bark and at 130 lbs he presents as a dog that requires caution. He and the UPS drivers love each other, they understand his love is easily bought with dog biscuits. Our other dog us a Brittany Spaniel, also a hunting breed but scent driven and also given up as she would bump into little kids and knock them over. They enjoy each other , they both learned to stay clear of the donkey and when we hear coyotes we keep them inside until the donkey gets rid of them. Both dogs are perfect for us but folks should do their homework before taking on these larger breeds.

Look for it on KZbin This is the most common breed of dog in Zimbabwe and every village no matter how remote will have these dogs used for hunting and security🐶🐾🐕Easily the most common name for a family dog the Ridgeback type in Zimbabwe is always Shumba😂😂 Shumba means lion 🦁 in the Zimbabwean vernacular. Similar to Simba in Swahili

We have a brother and sister pair of 120 lb Ridgebacks mixed with a bit of Doberman and Boxer, they are not only geniuses, they are total powerhouses, extremely protective of their family (pack) and property almost to a fault, you couldn't ask for a more loving and loyal companion but as far as being a neighborhood friendly type dog, not so much, if you're not family, you are not welcome and we never taught them to be that way, it's just the way they are, they would die for my wife and I without a second thought about it so we have had to be careful and educate every guest we have had to not go into the house without one of us with them because it would be a very bad idea, if we let you in, you are good, go in by yourself though and you might not make it back out in one piece.

I have a half Ridgeback/Dane. He shares a lot of traits with this video. He loves other dogs(including our 2 year old lab). He's a big ole couch potato. Loves snuggles. Oh and he is a FAST animal. His favorite thing to do with our Lab is run around the back yard. He slows at first so she's on his tail then he bolts. It catches you off guard how fast they are. 8:40. Haha mine LOVES the outdoors. He just hangs out in the sun for hours. Besides sleeping on our couches. His favorite thing is finding a sunny spot and lay down.

Do some actual research, this dog was not bred by the shona or the ndebele for that matter. The dogs which were brought into Zimbabwe (then rhodesia) were not native to the country, the truth is that no one really knows the origin of the ridgeback. It was bred with Zimbabwean dogs though, which is why as a breed it has only recently been allowed to join the list as a pure bred because previously it was considered a mutt.

I have a 5 month old puppy that I bought from Craigslist when she was 6 weeks old. Was told she was lab and aussie. Now I fully suspect ridgeback and aussie. She has always chewed a lot and a bit snappy at times (wants to be the boss) and she looks like a ridgeback/same coloring exactly. Amber eyes and nose. She doesn't have a ridge that is obvious but it is darker along her topline and her hair goes straight up on her back everytime she is excited or worried. She hops like a rabbit and can outrun any dog at the dog park. She is super strong at only 40 pounds and always go for the heavier toys and sticks and can fetch a large 10 pound dog ball with pride up the hills. Incredible jumper. Already catches frisbee in the air. Very protective, loving and smarter than any dog I've owned so far. I will get her DNA tested. She looks like a ridgeback. I often thought she had Great Dane or Greyhound or Bloodhound and now I'm finding out those breeds are part of the ridgeback makeup. Loving this dog.

Mine too. She was a rescue and we got her at 5.5 months old. Trained her from the beginning but the separation anxiety was INTENSE and our house suffered because of it. She is exercised and socialised every day (rain, hail or shine) and her destructive behaviour has ceased quite a lot however she still acts up every now and then for attention. She's still an absolutely beautiful dog and I'm so proud of her and proud to be her human :)

I have a beautiful male Ridgeback named Logan, who, at 110 lbs, is on the larger end of the scale for the breed. He's a great companion and is with me nearly every minute of the day. I brought him home the same week that I retired and if I go on vacation it's a road trip to somewhere dog friendly. For many years I was most interested in the German working breeds and have had both the German Shepherd and the Doberman and still admire both those breeds very much. But I'm not a "one breed only" kind of guy and I admire many breeds. I love Golden Retrievers and consider them the perfect family dog. I was attracted to Ridgebacks for many years and finally decided to get one. No regrets at all. Logan is a magnificent dog but I would not recommend them for first time dog owners. They can be very stubborn and are not the easiest breed to train, although they are very smart. If socialized well they should get along with other dogs, as they are hounds and therefore pack animals whose breeding originally called for dogs that would work in concert with other dogs. Logan remains an unneutered male but can get along well with other males both neutered and unneutered; however, he will not put up with overt aggression from another dog, especially another male, and he is exceptionally powerful, so I monitor him well at dog parks when other dogs are present. An aggressive chocolate Lab lunged at him a few weeks ago and he clamped his jaws onto its head like a Pit Bull and wouldn't let go until I splashed some coffee on him. He is tolerant but once he gets angry he is a force to be reckoned with. Most of the time he's my huge cuddly pup who likes to sleep on the sofa and get his tummy rubbed. These dogs are natural watch dogs and guardians but without having the hair-trigger response of some other breeds [think Rottweiler or GSD here] and were partially bred originally to serve as guardians on Rhodesian and South African farms. For someone with the time to put into them and the experience of prior large dog ownership, I highly recommend the Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Was lucky enough to find a ridgeless Ridgeback at the shelter where I worked. He just looked like a red puppy then, so I didn't know what he was until he got a little older. He's the BEST dog. Very loyal to the family, but he's a bit wary when strangers come over. He barks a LOT when he's outdoors, and he loves to run, even though he's an old man now (11.5yrs). He's still so incredibly fast, too! He has a VERY strong prey drive, and will chase squirrels, birds, and the occasional cat, if they come into our fenced yard while he's outside. Now, what she said about not shedding... HAHAHA! Yes, they do shed.

Jenn J How are they indoors or just in the garden? Are they fine with kids and other dogs if socialised with them from a young age? I’m planning to get one and he’ll probably get 1-3 hours of medium-high intensity exercise every day. Otherwise he will be in the house or in the yard.

In modern western countries this practice has dramatically lessened, to the point where other breeders talk about such people as being unethical, and sending them running for the hills. I have no doubt however that despite this, a few still do it in secrecy, and that it's done in other countries. I met a breeder of Belgian sheepdogs ( groenendael) once that openly said he culled, meaning killed, any dogs with even a trace of white, and hell, the standard ALLOWS a little bit on the chest. Some people just care more about the ribbons than the dogs.
@animalobsessed1
@animalobsessed1 6 жыл бұрын
Janeway1269 I believe the word "culling" can be used to simply mean "remove from the gene pool". It doesn't necessarily mean kill (anymore - in the past it definitely did). I cannot fathom why anyone would want to kill a purebred puppy, since they can be sold for quite a decent sum of money. (Unless it's a pitbull or Chihuahua, since people can get those without paying a breeder's prices.)

I've watched it. It exaggerates and generalizes way too much, leaves out information, and most importantly, is old enough that a lot of things have changed since it was filmed (quite a few of those changes were prompted by this movie). At the time I watched it, I actually believed everything they said, but I have become more educated since then. The "documentary" chose to focus on the black sheep of the dog fancy, and made this minority seem like the majority.

Great breed we are on our second 1st a male and currently a female. Be prepared for a very strong willed dog. They like to be on furniture and we set rules against this which has been very difficult to enforce despite being consistent with rules. Ridge backs tend to do what they think is best for their comfort not yours even when you have given them a nice dog bed. They will wander off so definitely need to be attended to at all times outdoors. They get along well with other dogs not the least bit aggressive. They are happy with one good exercise session daily and normal bathroom breaks. One problem we've had is that if off leash they will eat poop of dogs, deer, horses any animal which has driven us crazy to the point that I use a muzzle when off leash as nothing is worse than a dog barfing up horse manure.....gross! Overall there is no other dog breed I would choose as they are beautiful protective powerful independent thinkers.

I have a 2 1/2 year old female and a 1 year old male. My male is a little destructive but he has a lot of energy that keeps the female, Andre, more active. Andre has been fixed so she has a tendency to put on a little extra weight. The male, Dragon, is very active. They are great family dogs and they do stay inside with me. If strangers come to the house they will confront them. But, if I shake their hand the dogs befriend them. They do love kids and even have a sense of whether they are good or bad. They go with me almost everywhere. They stay in the truck and enjoy the attention of passerby’s.
