My father has had over a dozen Filas... We had them around my family while growing up and would walk circle around me and my sister at our property. My father told me one time when i was young i started walking down our dirt road trying to leave and the dog came and picked me up by my shorts and carried me back home. I do disagree with what he said about the dog being friendly to other dogs, ive seen a fila pick up a pitt and shack it like a rag doll until it was dead. This breed is beautiful but not to be messed with by the untrained.

Hey Guys. I have has several Dog breeds in my life. Like mastino, alano, great dane, fila , mastif, alabai and Cane Corso. Honestly, No other breed reach a fila. But now i turned to the original fila brasileiros. They are simular looking but still a fully working Dog that also protects u from big Cats and so on. The fila protects u against Humans or dogs. But If u have a Farm and need the ultimate Farm Dog, that protects u, Herd Lifestock and u can uae for hunting, than the OFB should BE Ur Dog.

Fila is a special dog. Don't get one if you have any doubt you can keep it as long as it lives. They are like white on rice with the family but do not like strange adults. You can try to socialize them but you will likely have a problem one day. They have insane defense drive and will not hesitate if they feel threatened. They are not afraid of anything.

Hy guys, I'm Brazilian and I need to say that this dog is not for a normal family, he has a natural "ojeriza", he does not accept any person that is not part of the family, if you do not have experience with protection dogs, do not have a Fila, Fila means bite, hold and not letting go in Portuguese.

I reinforce Marcelo's argument. My family had one years ago, extremely kind with people of the house but very aggressive with strangers. Best documentary of this breed I have seen they are spectacular animals and will give their lives for you but they are not normal pets like a Labrador. These animals may look docile and sweet but will bite in a millisecond if they feel someone is challenging their owner or property even the people that say they are "good with dogs". I never locked my house until I owned a Fila and then I locked the house for the intruders protection not mine. That being said when they are with you they are teddy bears and you have nothing to fear but never forget the fact these animals work and their job is protecting their herd and pack. Do not get one of these dogs without having a huge wallet, fenced in property, and reading everything you can about their behaviour. They are a bigger liability than a firearm and can be just as lethal.

Gustar Barrow did such a fantastic job of describing exactly how Filas behave and how much guidance they need from their people to help them be happy, content, trustworthy dogs. I really appreciate how candid the interviewees are in all Dogumentary videos. I foster a lot of giant breeds and when I see what other channels post about them, I can see why so many end up in the pound or get surrendered to rescue. The other channels make it sound like even very complicated breeds who absolutely need leadership and someone who will enforce boundaries are great for even the meekest owners, and it's such a disservice to the dogs and the people who end up with them. Dogumentary always plays it straight. Much appreciation!

This videos you guys make are AWESOME. Really informative. Been binge watching them and got so happy to see you have one on Filas ! Really awesome ! Thanks for the quality content ! Love Filas. People tremble, here in Brazil, when you tell them you own a Fila. When he said the dog loved the biting work, that's a Fila thing. "Fila" is a verb in portuguese, it means "hold/grab" in portuguese. That's what they were bred to do. Find than bite and hold down people. Another thing that is very prominent about Filas is that they can't be bought with food or anything else. If you're a stranger the only thing you'll get from a Fila is teeth. The bad thing about that is that you HAVE to lock your dog when you get visitors. They don't make friends. My uncle had one and so did my grandfather. Filas are great. OBS: Is the name of the dog "Jao" ? I'm Brazilian and "John" in portuguese is actually "João". Some people call guys named "João" by the nickname "Jão". But it's not an actual name. It's just a nickname. It's like an abbreviation of "João".

Very good video. As, there is so little information in the U.S. about Filas any video is a plus. I just picked up my Fila puppy a week ago from a small breeder in South Carolina, who is originally from Brasil. The dog in this video while he moves and his proportions are very much like your typical Fila, black is not an accepted coat color by the CAFIB (the top organization that sets the breed standard for Fila Brasileiro in Brasil). Nonetheless, a very strong looking dog. Trust me real Filas are hard to find in the U.S. It took me a year of looking, and making friends with those who have experience with the breed. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. Other posters are correct; Filas are not for the meek of heart, but they are one of the few natural guard breeds that mix loyalty with a natural alertness to danger. As one breeder/trainer from Elói Mendes told me, virtually all of the traditional guarding breeds need to be trained to execute proper bite work, with Filas often times it seems like you are really training them when not to bite. As long as you understand the responsibility of owning a Fila, and are willing to invest the time and money into proper training, they are wonderful dogs. The next few years of training and nurturing should be fun!
@oscar60433 жыл бұрын
In the 70's there was a great controversy of the Fila Brasileiro's confiderations. There were many reports of mixing the Great Dane and the Neapolitan Mastiff, then obtaining the black Fila. Before, there was no black color. Currently the black standard is excluded from CAFIB, because we know that in the past there was really a mixture with other breeds to increase the size and muscle mass of the Fila Brasileiro. This was CBKC / FCI's biggest mistake.

They are put it varies dog to dog for some reason. I've heard of a Chihuahua that lived at a vineyard and ate grapes daily but never got sick and a Mastiff that grabbed up one grape before his owner could get to it and was at the emergency vet in 30 minutes and dead 2 hours later.
@Acadian.FrenchFry7 жыл бұрын
Yeah he said grapes too. They do say grapes are toxic, but wolves in East Europe raid vineyards sometimes. So who knows. He said tangerines too and citrus is supposed to be hard on them.

I’m from Brazil and my uncle’s had Filas for over 20 years, 3 or 4 at a time. In all the years I’ve been to his house, he never leaves the dogs out of their kennels while we are outside. They’re his yard dogs, he uses them for protection. Once, they tore my aunt’s car apart chasing a squirrel, I mean they destroyed metal, these dogs aren’t for first time owners

Great interview. Mr. Barrow did a great job explaining how a Fila is really like. He really opened my eyes as to what these dogs are capable of. Great work Dogumentary TV. I am addicted to your breed specific documentaries!!! Can I make a suggestion as to a breed you should look at for a documentary? Thank you!!! = )

Thanks for this realistic and practical discussion. I get so upset with owners who don’t respect the inherent qualities they were bred for. Doesn’t mean you can’t totally love them and acknowledge how awesome your dog is, but we’d all be a lot safer (including the dogs themselves) if their owners were also aware of and training for the risks their dogs pose

Your Fila Brasileiro is beautiful and you really know him, his personality, his drive, etc. However, the Fila Brasileiro does not descend from the Mastiff. Extensive research here in Brazil has shown they descend from the "Alanos", Spanish and Portuguese dogs that were brought to South America by the settlers. They were first used to 'hunt" fugitive slaves and later to work on the farms and ranches, dealing with the cattle, protecting them from the jaguars. That's the origin of the Fila. Extremely loyal to their owners and family, excellent property guardians, and known for their hate towards strangers. As the presenter very well warned: 'Filas are not for the inexperienced... '

I'm brazilian, and i have 2 filas on Farm. They are my babies, but trust me, this is not a cute pet for family's with little babys, of full houses. 1 year ago, we heard some comotion at the front of the house, when we got out, the 2 dogs hed killed a wolf.

I didn't even know Brazil had wolves, are you brazilian living in Brazil or you live elsewhere?
@gabriellopes96513 жыл бұрын
@@Poteluz actually there is some species of wolves and wild dogs here, the most famous is the "Lobo Guará" or, in english, "manned wolf"
@Poteluz3 жыл бұрын
@@gabriellopes9651 I know but that's not an actual wolf, that's a different kind of wild canine that any large powerful dog breed could kill. They just gave them that name but they're not an actual wolf.
@gabriellopes96513 жыл бұрын
@@Poteluz oh, didnt know they were not considered actual wolves, thank you. About their strength, I wouldnt say they are this weak, in Goiás, the state I live here in Brazil is the local with the most manned wolves, so its normal to see them and they are actually afraid of everything, but when they have to attack, things go bloody 😬
@Poteluz3 жыл бұрын
@@gabriellopes9651 yeah I could imagine but any of these dog breeds would destroy one, a Mastiff, Boxer, American Bulldog, Doberman, Rottweiler, Pitbull, Akita, German Shepherd, Dogo Argentino, Cane Corso, Kangal, etc etc etc.

Always being interested in the border science of animal species, I´ve recently listened to the story of a guy who´s grandpa had a ranch in rural northern Florida and had lived there for a long time. To make a long story short, one day his grandpa took him to visit his friend in the forest but before going there he bought fresh fish (herrings I believe) salt, potatoes, red wine kitchen oil, charcoal) and food for chicken. When approaching the cabin in the woods his grandpa made some strange sounds and then started to offload the groceries and then went to see/feed the chicken he raised there. A short time after getting into the cabin, somebody knocked on the door and his grandpa went outside in order to talk to the person privatelly. A short time later his grandpa reenterred the room and asked his grandson to come and see his friend, an almost 9 ft tall Bigfoot. He was a little surprised but so was BF, but once the grandpa was present the boy didn´t feel insecure. The BF left for shortly after in order to bring his family and his grandpa started pulling the barbecue outside the cabin and put the charcoal on fire. While the fish was frying they lit a fire in order to heat the oilpan in which they pretented to make french fries, etc. Soon the BF was back and he brought with him his wife and 2 F Jrs a boy and a girl. During the party, where the BF eagerly ate the salty meal the boy relaxed a little and felt simpathy for the BF Jrs. Many years later, his grandpa had already passed he went to the cabin with a BRAZILIAN MASTIFF puppy which he gifted to the BFs. He remarks that one/two years later, when back to the cabin the huge BF was eager to show him how he had trained the dog. Many years later again he went back to the cabin and noticed that the bushes had somehow overgrown the little house but the chicken still where around and apparently got even more numerous. The now outgrown BF boy came out of the cabin saluted him but made signs that they had to leave. While leading him out of the woods he frequently made loud sounds with his voice as if to chase somebody away. He then new that the times had changed and that it was no more safe to walk into the forest all by himself. (cannot say if it´s true or not but it´s a nice story, imo). THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO, btw

Great breed for their purpose. Back in the day I was tempted to get one. I had 3 Neos that all passed away. My lifestyle now being married with 3 kids doesnt present the right environment for a Fila Unfortunately. My house is like grand central station with neiborhood kids all the time. Not a good environment for a Fila...not to mention they are a restricted breed in my development. Still fascinating breed....they dont drool as much as a Neo. lol

People talk about protection dogs and have guys in bite suits training them but there are very few PROVEN natural born man-stoppers left in the world. Typically because the dogs that had the backbone and drive to take down a grown man have been killed. Ive seen "protection" breeds such as a Cane Corso growl and bark but ultimately avoid direct engagement with an intruder. I am fortunate enough to own a natural born (no training) man-stopper. It was discovered in an unfortunate manner but fortunately the man will recover fully and got away with only 6 stitches and some deep puncture wounds on his side from an attack lasting less than 5 seconds. The court costs and hospital bills are very expensive but because we went to bat for him and met all the requirements ( microchip, $100,000 in liability insurance, muzzle, electric perimeter, 6 ft fence, vicious dog registration, warnings posted on all property entrances) that the court gave us we were able to keep him with us and save him from euthanization. He sleeps in bed with my wife and I every night and our teenage daughters snuggle and play with him. He is a hybrid (62.5% Boerboel, 12.5% dogo argentino, 12.5% turkish kangal, and 12.5% great dane) and currently weighs in around 145 pounds and around 30 inches at the shoulder. Owning a dog like this requires a ton of love, patience, a respect for what he is capable of, and the knowledge that if you allow him to think he is in charge, you've already lost the battle.
