Gustar Barrow originally, from Guyana grew up with a Fila named Duke. On a hunting trip Gustar credits Duke with saving his life or at least from great harm, when Duke took down a Wild Boar only feet from a young Gustar.
Fila Brasileiro is also known as the Brazilian Mastiff. The word "Filar" in Portuguese literally means "hold, arrest, grab". The breed is a "Catch dog", a dog that "bites and not loose".
The Fila Brasileiro is believed to be a descendant of the 15th-century English Mastiff, bloodhound, bulldog and Rafeiro do Alentejo. The Fila Brasileiro breed was bred and raised primarily on large plantations and cattle farms where they originated.
They were taught to chase down jaguars, cattle, and other animals, as well as runaway slaves. The dogs would grab the slave or animals by the neck and hold them until the farmer arrived. This instinct can be observed among puppies when they are playing.

Fila is a special dog. Don't get one if you have any doubt you can keep it as long as it lives. They are like white on rice with the family but do not like strange adults. You can try to socialize them but you will likely have a problem one day. They have insane defense drive and will not hesitate if they feel threatened. They are not afraid of anything.

Hy guys, I'm Brazilian and I need to say that this dog is not for a normal family, he has a natural "ojeriza", he does not accept any person that is not part of the family, if you do not have experience with protection dogs, do not have a Fila, Fila means bite, hold and not letting go in Portuguese.

I reinforce Marcelo's argument. My family had one years ago, extremely kind with people of the house but very aggressive with strangers. Took me months to educate him to ignore people in the street while walking. Another fact about the breed, they were used to protect the cattle from jaguars in the rainforest too

I adopted the CUTEST Black Lab mix from the local shelter. As she continued to grow it was very clear she’s NOT any kind of a Black Lab. Indigo is almost 2 years old and I recently got the results of her DNA test. 💯 Fila Brasilia… I figured she’s a mastiff mix but no, she’s a full blooded FILA. Indigo is the TOUGHEST Dog I’ve ever trained! So much work but she’s 💯 worth it !!

This videos you guys make are AWESOME. Really informative. Been binge watching them and got so happy to see you have one on Filas ! Really awesome ! Thanks for the quality content ! Love Filas. People tremble, here in Brazil, when you tell them you own a Fila. When he said the dog loved the biting work, that's a Fila thing. "Fila" is a verb in portuguese, it means "hold/grab" in portuguese. That's what they were bred to do. Find than bite and hold down people. Another thing that is very prominent about Filas is that they can't be bought with food or anything else. If you're a stranger the only thing you'll get from a Fila is teeth. The bad thing about that is that you HAVE to lock your dog when you get visitors. They don't make friends. My uncle had one and so did my grandfather. Filas are great. OBS: Is the name of the dog "Jao" ? I'm Brazilian and "John" in portuguese is actually "João". Some people call guys named "João" by the nickname "Jão". But it's not an actual name. It's just a nickname. It's like an abbreviation of "João".

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve had 2 filas over the past16 years and just lost another one to bloat. I really appreciate your excellent video, you explained them perfectly. They are not for everyone but for protecting the family. Funny how their disposition is always the same with all of them. Also, if I ever get another one I will never feed kibble again because although I was careful it still eventually happened anyway. One note about their drool because they sling it, get it off your vehicle paint quickly because it stains. Excellent dog!!

Your Fila Brasileiro is beautiful and you really know him, his personality, his drive, etc. However, the Fila Brasileiro does not descend from the Mastiff. Extensive research here in Brazil has shown they descend from the "Alanos", Spanish and Portuguese dogs that were brought to South America by the settlers. They were first used to 'hunt" fugitive slaves and later to work on the farms and ranches, dealing with the cattle, protecting them from the jaguars. That's the origin of the Fila. Extremely loyal to their owners and family, excellent property guardians, and known for their hate towards strangers. As the presenter very well warned: 'Filas are not for the inexperienced... '

They are put it varies dog to dog for some reason. I've heard of a Chihuahua that lived at a vineyard and ate grapes daily but never got sick and a Mastiff that grabbed up one grape before his owner could get to it and was at the emergency vet in 30 minutes and dead 2 hours later.

I owned two American pitbull, Husky, Fila mixes as a Young man for 10 years. The male took more after this dog's looks and his size. They were so fast, powerful, and smart. And were great friends for company. Near my final days with the male, he'd sit and look at me, with such intent and intelligence. I can definitely see this breed in him. In his mannerisms, his eyes. Droopy face. I'd like to own one of these some day, even if it's somewhat similar to the dogs I owned (as they weren't full Fila)

People talk about protection dogs and have guys in bite suits training them but there are very few PROVEN natural born man-stoppers left in the world. Typically because the dogs that had the backbone and drive to take down a grown man have been killed. Ive seen "protection" breeds such as a Cane Corso growl and bark but ultimately avoid direct engagement with an intruder. I am fortunate enough to own a natural born (no training) man-stopper. It was discovered in an unfortunate manner but fortunately the man will recover fully and got away with only 6 stitches and some deep puncture wounds on his side from an attack lasting less than 5 seconds. The court costs and hospital bills are very expensive but because we went to bat for him and met all the requirements ( microchip, $100,000 in liability insurance, muzzle, electric perimeter, 6 ft fence, vicious dog registration, warnings posted on all property entrances) that the court gave us we were able to keep him with us and save him from euthanization. He sleeps in bed with my wife and I every night and our teenage daughters snuggle and play with him. He is a hybrid (62.5% Boerboel, 12.5% dogo argentino, 12.5% turkish kangal, and 12.5% great dane) and currently weighs in around 145 pounds and around 30 inches at the shoulder. Owning a dog like this requires a ton of love, patience, a respect for what he is capable of, and the knowledge that if you allow him to think he is in charge, you've already lost the battle.

My fathet rented a farm here in Brasil for milk production and the woman who own the farm had 2 of them, they are very unstable dogs with strangers, I was around they and it was ok, but some day I was inside my father's car and he tried to attack me, luckly the window was closed, my father almost died because he didnt realised that the window was closed. Also my brother left the house a night to do something and came back 2 minutes later, saying that the Fila snarled to him. Its a great guard dog to have, but dangerous to people he dont know.

In Brazil, you'll not see a black Fila that often But in general, it is an awsome breed if you want a guard, cow herding or hunting dog. Just be sure to socialize it. Filas have a quality called ojeriza (a portuguese word that means extreme aversion) towards strangers. They are not the friendly dog nextdoor you can put a jacket on and take to see children in cancer hospitals. Socialize them, but be careful. At home, things are even more complicated. They will jump and try to kill people, specially if they are not with the owner. The fmailiy are the only ones safe (and very safe) around it. That's why so many countries ban the Fila.

If you put all dog breeds inside a huge room and let all them fight each other, the Fila would be the last dog standing.

Good responsible information, except for the grapes which are more dangerous to dogs than chocolate, especially red ones. No, a few grapes aren't going to kill a Fila, but they might kill a small dog. Good on the bloat but poor analogy about lions which gorge themselves super quickly and in excess. Nothing scares me more than bloat, which is why I consider tacking the stomach a reasonable procedure if done by an expert veterinary surgeon on an adult dog. Nice job, you seem like one of the few people who should own a Fila.
