In the second episode of "Last Chance High" we are introduced to the young Montreal "Spanky" Almond who fights a daily battle with a crippling speech impediment along with his fellow students' derision, mockery and bullying at the Moses Montefiore Academy in Chicago.
On Chicago's West Side, there is a school for the city's most at-risk youth - the Moses Montefiore Academy. Most of the students at Montefiore have been kicked out of other schools for aggressive behavior, and many have been diagnosed with emotional disorders.
Last Chance High takes viewers inside Montefiore's classrooms and into the homes of students who are one mistake away from being locked up or committed to a mental hospital.

This little boy, Montreal/"Spanky", has clearly been traumatized. And, every time, an adult says to him, he just needs "to slow down" or "you can talk better than that," you are reinforcing his insecurities and not helping. He needs a REAL, well-trained psychologist (not a life coach), psychiatrist, and a speech pathologist. He's not a bad kid. He's traumatized and needs real help. He can overcome it, but not by people telling him to simply "breathe in and out" and acting as if he has more control over his speech, than he actually does.

@@jonasjulien4348 Healthcare, including psychological and emotional care, should be a right for every citizen of the wealthiest country in the world. We pay taxes to pay for public schools, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. already, so why should we not expand on that so that EVERY single person can access the care that they need when they need it? We spent $732,000,000,000 on defense spending in one year from 2018-2019. Compare that to the $726,000,000,000 spent during the same time by China, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, the UK, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil...COMBINED. The next 10 top GDP countries combined!!!!!!!! That is totally insane!!! There is NO REASON some funding could not be diverted. Not to mention our tax system is fucked. Huge corporations pay absolutely nothing. Rich individuals find loopholes in the tax system and cheat the country. My point is, we are the wealthiest country in the world. Seeing people suffer like Spanky is suffering isn't right and I know we are capable of fixing it. I just don't know if we are willing.

@@isit2012yet Bro, with all due respect, consider the context. This isnt a normal school. These are special education kids with emotional regulation disorders. You have no idea what a godsend a patient man like that is. Consider what happens if the teacher starts to get into a trench war with the bully. The bully just waits until class is out, and then continues harassing the kid on the bus, and online. There’s not much recourse a teacher has in that situation. The best you can do unfortunately is give good advice to the victim and speak in private. And dont act like he didn’t call the bully out. He did. And you are judging the teacher based off of a 10 second clip, you arent actually down there putting in the work to help out these kids like this man is. i’m sure he speaks with the bullies in private and tries to change their behavior when cameras are off. He doesn’t teach there for the money, I can assure you that. People that work there are a special, amazing breed of people. Again… not much recourse. Not like he can threaten to expel or suspend the kids, the kids don’t care, and they would prefer that over school. I’ve explained this to you in the clearest way that I can. I’ll reiterate: This. teacher. Did. The. Best. Possible. Thing. He. Could. Do. I had a teacher that publicly defended me against bullying. Trust me it didn’t help, it just made it worse for me. It put a division between me and the rest of the class even more. although it felt good in the moment, and the teacher had my best interest at heart, it just doesn’t work that way! Kids can be cruel and heartless sometimes. A good teacher knows how to field situations. Cant always just do what feels good/right in the moment. ESPECIALLY in a school built for the express purpose of helping problem children. Doing what he does helps in the long term slowly but surely, trust me…

I feel like the teacher was trying to get spanky to deal with it and to ignore the student making fun of him to prepare spanky for the real world. It's not the best choice made by the teacher but I think I could see why he did it. Yes the teacher should have approached the situation in a different way.

They should have open book so people can learn how to read and pronouce words correctly. If you cant do it in class, where can you do it? I mean in this specific case, i dont thing he should be askiing him to read.... he didnt raise his hand or nothing. If hes talking like that because hes nervous, it seems like it is because he is nervous.... then i dont think the teacher should be calling on him. Now, the teacher could have been trying to get him to be more confident even with the laughy-ness so he could stop be nervous and talk normally. But i dont think this was an appropriate time to do so,

Spanky has a serious speech impediment. He needs to get special attention by a professional, not be left alone while everyone in this video seems to think he's faking it, and make fun of him. Even the teachers / coaches make fun of him by forcing him to read or trying to force him to talk. -.-

you could be right, but you don't see behind the scenes. from my outlook i look at it as them trying to break out of his "shell" of low self esteem and once he slows down his thoughts and speaks with confidence he'll be able to form proper sentences and then obviously speak fluently from there

Um... serious speech impediment?!? Uh, no. Did you listen to what he said?? He said it "just" started a few months ago! Seems pretty clear to me that the poor kid has pretty serious anxiety disorder! I do agree however, that he needs to see a professional to help him control his anxiety & learn how to deal with it! True, the coach may not quite understand his "speaking issue", but he means well and I think he gets "through" to many of those kids! In fact you heard the boy, "coach is a good person". Clearly he means something to this little boy! Also, what a sweet, thoughtful boy, worrying about his mom & sisters being abused, even though his dad is probably hurting him too!

***** Dont be so down on yourself. Thats nonsense to say "the school was too good for you". Adolescent youth can be cruel in general, its not your issue. And the education system has been broken in this country for years now, the schools should be helping these kids situations more than teaching them about things that are in no way relevant to them (i know they do both but) - The curriculum needs to be updated to the 21st century. I dont blame you for hating it, I hated it myself.

The last thing he and his family should be worryiing about is his speech probl.ems. He and all the others who go to schools like this have emotional and mental problems as result from parents. What we really need to do as a nation is to not only help the kids but get the parents involvement. This people live in poverty, how would they be able to afford any speech therapy. They live in a world we could not evenn imagine, life around drugs, poverty, and stereotypes just bringing down these people

He also needs a new place to live, a new school to attend, and to have his father kept away from him. I'd adopt that kid in a heartbeat and do anything I could to help him. It breaks my heart to see a kid as young as he is already suffering from severe anxiety and PTSD. He seems like he has a good heart, but has obviously been traumatized and treated badly enough for a large enough portion of his life that his PTSD is manifesting itself in the form of literally leaving him speechless. He says in this video that his speech problem only started about 6 months ago (as of the time this was filmed), and I'd be willing to place a bet that that 6 month time frame coincides with when his convicted murderer father, who he is obviously terrified of, got out of prison. He probably talked back to his dad, got severely beaten, and now is literally so afraid to speak that he physiologically can't do it because something in his brain is telling him "talking back is what caused me to get hurt just don't ever talk". It's really sad. I'd bet if he were removed from his horribly unfortunate situation, shown proper care and attention, and had certified, trained professionals to help him learn methods to help cope with his traumatic childhood he could become a completely new person in a way. I'm largely just speculating here, but I've studied child psychology long enough to get a pretty good idea of what's happened during his childhood.

People have to WANT to change and for most of these kids it looks like they don't give one shit about doing so. They might say they do, but the moment you turn your back or let them out of your sight, they'll immediately go back to being who they really are.

What burns me up, is that even if some people are told, " You do not have the necessary skills to raise a child. If you have children, they will grow up with emotional problems, and will never be able to form any meaningful relationships." Would that stop anyone as selfish as most people are? Even knowing their child will walk through life alone? A social outcast? So, how can a psychiatrist fix that? How do you fix something, that was broken before it was even made?

perfect example of how schools don’t give a shit. i was bullied mentally, verbally, and even physically, and the school system didn’t care. at the beginning of every year they’d give us a speach about if we are being bullied we tell them so we feel safe again. but when i told them i was told to “ignore it”. i became very suicidal and i was out into the mental hospital, after that i only did half days but one day i wanted to go to field day, so i asked if i could stay the whole day. i was told “if you can’t handle learning you don’t deserve the fun part”. but i was learning, i just did it in a shorter amount of time, because the school didn’t do anything about me being bullied. when i would go to he counselor she would just send me home when i was depressed, not giving me any actual tips to deal with it, they were very uneducated. when i went to the social worker she showed me a crappy animation about depression being a dog and i just had to “get over it”. i bet if you ask anyone there about my situation they will deny it because that’s what that school always did; denied.

This is heartbreaking. What we are seeing right before us is a child having a severe reaction to the mental and physical abuse he survives everyday. It’s literally destroying his ability to express himself through his voice. This happens when you have to literally hold in your emotions. Imagine feeling like crying in a public place after being embarrassed. When someone ask you if you’re okay and you burst into that emotional release and you feel better. This child has had to learn himself to burry all feelings to the point that it’s PHYSICALLY effecting his brain. This is so sad.

I'm from the South Side of Chicago - South Chicago - and this struggle is real, but nothing new. And because of the proximity to Indiana - very relaxed gun laws - the guns are a'plenty here. As a survivor of child abuse and domestic violence, I too suffer from a crippling voice condition that makes it hard for me to speak - not always, but I can begin to cough and choke until I can't breathe. Thank you so much for doing this piece, it's as pertinent today as it was when produced back in 2014. Please keep putting out these quiet timebomb of stories and illuminating the intersections of violence, poverty, domestic violence, and systems failure.

It seems like spanky condition gets kind of worse when people questions him or try to get in his business about his home life (like a nervous type of thing ).. I feel like the counselor should at least attempt to try and build a relationship with him first to the point where he feels comfortable enough to speak.. instead of her going straight in asking him questions because ALOT of kids are taught by their parents what goes on in my house stays in my house .. soo for the counselor to be so aggressive asking him questions because he a child he is expected to answer whatever she says out of respect of her being a adult I wouldn’t tell her nothing honestly .. I believe he lost his voice because he experienced something so tragic to the point where he blame himself over the situation even though it was a accident and it scared him sooo bad to the point where he kind of went mute( or in shock ) ...it’s just sad he has too deal with this situation at such a young age .. I wonder how he is doing now ... can you all do updates on the children ????

It’s how you deal with it if you leave that classroom they probably are going to think you did something and send you somewhere else. He is trying to teach him that sometimes you need to tune them out because in the real world what’s gonna happen? The same thing you lash out you back to square one you hold that shit in you gone pop, now if you find something (aka basketball with the coach) that’s gone be your safe haven and you’re going to realize yeah they bullying me now but when I get older and better their isn’t anything they can do to me that’s already been done you haven’t see the worst part of my life you just seeing the best that I let you see.

@@Kekenotone1 In the real world you always have the option to walk away, no one is going to force you to stand there and be disrespected like that teacher did to spanky. Eventually he can learn to tune it out but he hasn't reached that level of maturity yet.The school needs to encourage those kids to walk away when they feel that their anger is going to get out of control. Not lock them in the classroom where they will continue to disrupt class.

The coach seems to be the only one there that gives a damn about the students. He talks to them, understands them, and offers a helping hand when no one else does. As someone who is working to become a teacher, I believe that teachers should be more than just robots that try to cram information in the students' brains. Teachers don't necessarily have to be your friends, but they should at least be someone you can trust and feel comfortable sitting down and talking with. After all, who wants to learn from someone who is despised?
