One of the staff in a previous episode said they were doomed and were already a statistic that is pretty much how it pans out. It's like superdeterminism, they don't even have free will at this point, their destiny is already set and the outcome is known, it just has to play out. That's why the bigger problem isn't in rehabilitating but in abolishing the horrible conditions in these underdeveloped parts of America and really changing the system, because it is all a systemic issue. Vice's Last Chance is literally a first-hand insight on how these kind of criminals are made, from childhood to adulthood, you sympathize with them and see their human side, but they are still destined to fall back into the streets. These boys are pre-programmed to act out in the way they do, it's why no amount of advice can really get them to think, unless they already have some small level of stability in their life or inside them to heed the warning, if they don't, it's like you are talking to a brick wall. Those who come out of the gang life against all odds, already have some little semblance of sense inside of them, and deep down truly didn't even wanna be a part of it, so it isn't really a case of this person changed or was saved, but more of this person finally got the chance to show who he really was, those who don't have this little glimmer of hope are doomed to a life like this. Next time I ever hear about gang related cases, I will think back to this doc and remember this is probably the environment they came from, they weren't born blood thirsty, but in broken households.

what? Vice Lords is a gang that's been around for a long ass time (since 1958). The word "vice" means immoral, or criminal activities. That's why the gang named themselves that, and that's why Vice news is named that...because it mostly covers stuff considered to be criminal or immoral.

In case anyone would like to know: After the show ended cortez fell into a life of violence, drug dealing and street life, forcing him and his family to flee the city. Coach william had gotten laid off and burned through the majority of his savings, but he says he continues to see some of the kids on the west side. Crystal and her son(Rudy Andrew Sanchez II) sadly died on Friday September 28, 2018. Spanky (montreal almond) got arrested just this year. And lastly, keontay was shot and killed. This is all the information I found for the people that wanted an update.

SweetDulces There is no need to be rude and yeah, I am grateful. I know plenty of white people who have been born into a world of gangland crime. Judging from your previous comments you have racial profiling problems yourself. I understand police, judges, politicians and general people in power are racist but I personally see everyone as equal. If you have watched the previous episodes then you would know that many of these children's father were involved in gangs, they have shot people, robbed, and one father even laughed to his son about his crime. Their mothers don't care and the children are left to defend for themselves. This happens all over the world. Don't try bring racism into this issue, this is a global issue.

3:40 I spent a couple weeks interviewing guys in the local inner city for a college research project, you wouldn't believe how common this story is. Young kids, 8-12 years old, hanging out doing normal kid stuff, and some gang member offers them easy money to help them sell. Most of the kids are too young to know any better, and the ones who do, they just wait until their mom gets sick just like Keontay's, because then even a good kid who knows better is hard-pressed not to do it when their mom is sick, their landlord is knocking on their door, and there aren't any legitimate jobs they can do to help cover costs because there aren't any real businesses in their neighborhood. Get them when they're that young, and those gang members can basically guide them growing up to be exactly what they want them to be. It's a sick, vicious cycle, and I've always had huge respect for the guys I spoke to who got out of that life and were adamant in keeping their kids from falling down it.

The kid talking about his mother and making money to help her out really shows what the issue of gangs stems from. Poverty stricken homes and neighborhoods. This is an economic problem at its root. That’s why we get nowhere with it we treat it as if the people are the ones in the wrong, when it’s the system that has wronged them.

Keontay is very handsome as is Cortez..so many of my young Black brothers are handsome, charismatic, intelligent, and deeply wounded. It’s jus the streets is super complicated U either caught up in it, or trying to live thru it, relatives in it sumtimes parents while for some they’re also trying to chase their dreams and work... While the streets get no support too by outside help Like at sum point they prob think there isn’t a way out Man it’s just so integral that these kids see the future and don’t get caught up in that life and instead go on to leave and live a better one. That they actually believe in their own potential.

The kid at 00:08, that's on the computer, is no longer with us. Lost his life on the streets. Along with his passing, we've lost Keontay, Melvin James, Jr, and Cortez is in prison till 2033. The rest of the cast has mostly done a little bit of time and gotten out. Reverend Hood also lost his grandson to gun violence in 2023. Is this show cursed? I don't think it is. It's a stark reminder of the sort of life that is all too common in certain parts of Chicago.

I love this mini series, they should really show this in schools for young teenagers that are on the wrong path. Sometimes I look at those kids , and say what bad kids they are but then I look at their situations in life also. And it doesn't help that majority of black media aka hip hop exploits this type of behavior as cool or acceptable. I also believe those kids have so much potential in life, I feel they just need to be in a better atmosphere and surroundings than they are in.
