In this episode, we will be evaluating many aspects of Artie Bucco including his relationship with Tony Soprano and whether or not it was a good thing; his relationship with Charmaine Bucco and his penchant for hostesses, where we will look into his relationships with Adriana, Elodie, and Martina; his desire to enter the underworld and whether or not he was a good guy.

Artie weirdly seems like the inverse of Tony in that throughout the series we see both men trying to change who they are and failing as they revert to their true nature. Tony wants to be better (or at least claims that he does) while Artie wants to be worse.

my faavorite scene was when tony told him blatantly "Nobody likes how outgoing and friendly you are to all the customers!" kind of like the person tony wished he could be naturally, and since they were beefing a bit he threw that out there to try to get a reaction out him. i thought that perfectly showcased how the two operate in life and made me appreciate artie for always going the extra mile to make people feel appreciated, while tony goes the extra mile to get what he wants

What saved him was wife. She was very clear she didn’t want a mob husband. She even throws it in Carmela’s face that she doesn’t agree with that lifestyle. Artie probably thought that’s what she actually wanted and that how he would get more respect with the girls and the money. Then he realizes that’s not a life he wants either. He got the best wife, smoking too.

@@youknowwhoyouare2269...however, Artie being Artie, just when he was about to take the shot, his pistol pointed at Tony's head, he froze. For what felt like an eternity to everyone in the diner, he just stood there, silent. His eyes locked with Tony's. Meanwhile, as the grip on his gun was becoming more and more shaky with each passing second, tears started forcing their way between his squinted eyelids. A single, big tear escaped and was now slowly running down his right cheek. Finally, Artie violently janked his arm to the right, just before pulling the trigger, followed by a defeaning bang. Shooting out of the muzzle and traveling at 500 m per second was not just a (banned) hollow point 9mm bullet, but Artie's hope of, at least, making a point that nobody could ignore, not even Tony Soprano. Even if his "hit" would now result in nothing more than a symbolic warning shot, the carnage in Artie's revenge fantasies about to be replaced by a torn pillow or a whole in a floor board. However, partly due to his, frankly, crappy firearm (which had been "provided" by a NYC associate at 4x its real value), his shot actually did hit, not a pillow, but a head. Fate not only being a crueal mistress, but apparently also a bully, it was the forehead of Anthony Jr. . Causing a mess for other people even in the very moment of his demise, Anthony Jr.'s blood and brains (although considerably less of the latter) splattered all over one member of a dark skinned duo sitting right in the adjacent booth, who immediately projectile vomitted all over his fellow homeboy. After all was said and done, Tony, to the public surpise of many, but private surprise of few, forgave Artie. None of the remaining Soprano family members would let on to it, but they were all, and would forever remain, thankful to him. Even Carmine Jr., who had been less than satisfied with Anthony Jr.'s job performance, was willing to overlook the inclement negative implications of what he called the "certain incedent, which has transpired". Furthermore, during their meeting at Vesuvio, Carmine was so impressed by the new (old) recipies, that he henceforth dined there regularly, even spreading the word throughout all 5 families of NYC, blessing the restaurant with an unending flow of new faces. Such was the number of loyal patrons at the retaurant, that many referred to it as the "6th family", even if merely in jest. A subsequent attempt by Arthur to enter into a business realtionship with Carmine Jr.'s production company, mainly revolving around the use of Vesuvio as a porn set, was eventually shut down by Charmaine.

Artie got one of the rare (possibly only?) feel good endings in The Soprano's. And of all the characters in the show, I'm glad it was him. Sure the bloke was an insecure worm of a man at times, but Artie represented the majority of the audience in the most realistic way...the average everyman who fantasized about having the power and control that the larger than life personalities in the mafia had, but at the end of the day knows he's happier in a way all those guys aren't by finding true fulfillment in positively giving back to his community

Artie was always a good guy inside. So no matter how much he tried to be a bad guy with the girls or with the underworld , he was always going to be coming back to doing the right thing. Just like how no matter how many good things Tony tried to do, he was gonna always end up being bad.

Maybe. Artie’s proving to be bad at loan sharking doesn’t mean that he would not have continued down that road had he shown some competence. He was hard-working, so that’s good. Disagree totally he was a spineless weasel and domesticated house cat. Hed be evil if he had the ability to do what he really wanted. He had power over that hostess and knew he could act like his true self without repercussions. He just wanted to F her and thats thee only reason he went out of his way to help her. He clearly helped expecting her to F him in return and when he found out she wasn't having it he didn't even pretend or make the slightest effort to all but spell out what he cared about and showed 0 decency or shame. Getting to know her and how hard a life she had and he purely and simply saw her as someone he could prey on. He was like father Phil in that way and constantly reminded me what a shameless morally bankrupt selfish self centered weasel he was.

Insecurity is a running theme on the Sopranos. Especially with Tony. Artie is the square version of Tony's insecurity. He is another character that gives contrast to this theme and shows no matter what realm you live in, actions based on ones insecurity often lead to drama. Melfi's insecurity issues are interesting as well as Pauli's and Christopher's as well. Basically every character in the show you see this theme if you look but some more prevalent than others.

My main take on Artie is that he’s an amazing “pathetic” character, kind of like Jerry from Rick and Morty. Artie is not someone who could measure up to Tony, especially in the audience’s eyes. Tony’s got this vibe of being cool, collected, and knows when to turn the heat on. Artie is the opposite; he’s hopelessly out of his element, he has an almost anti-charisma, and he’s a very reactive individual who never seems to have control over anything. Consequently, he’s a sad sack to the audience, and he seems eager for scraps off of Tony’s plate. But as the show goes on, it slowly reveals that every character is just as pathetic as Artie is, especially Tony and Christopher. And when they start to lose control over their circumstances, they react far worse, embarrass themselves way more, and cross much deeper lines than Artie would. By the end of the series, once we see just how low and depraved the mob life actually is, Artie seems downright benevolent, and actually reacts to his final conversation with Tony with a level of humility, grace, and makes genuine changes that Tony and Chris thoroughly rejected. At the end of the day, Artie’s not a good guy, but he’s someone who you fundamentally respect, because in a show about whether positive change is possible, he’s one of the few characters shows it is.

Artie always seemed like someone torn between what he felt he should/had to do and what he wanted to do. We see in The Many Saints of Newark and from things we hear in the show that he was a wild kid. But he followed his dad outta tradition, a feeling of obligation and maybe a bit of fear. He wants to be seen as one thing but always ends up coming off another way. He's not a super nice guy but he knows what ethics are and what's expected and goes along which allows him a feeling of superiority among the gangsters around em. I definitely think in another life he coulda been more of a tough guy. Maybe even a gangster. But he had a different upbringing and environment than most of these people and took another path. He probably had what it took to be decent in the streets but his environment, tradition, and his pops set em on another route, lucky for him. He's jealous of the guys but he knows that chapter of his life has long been over. But he doesn't really seem like a kind, empathetic, or giving individual so much as knowing what's expected and doing that over what he actually wants in many situations.

Artie could best be described as "the guy that got left behind." While his best friend dropped out of school and helped Jackie run the "minor league crew" with guys like Sil, Ralphie, and Tony B, Artie left the group he was already barely apart of to help work at his dad's restaurant. While the other guys were being fast-tracked through the ranks of the Mafia because of the Feech La Manna heist, Artie needed to rely on his parents to help pay for school in London. And while Tony was living in a castle on the hill, counting his fortunes by the millions, and banging anything with a pulse, Artie barely managed to get a second restaurant up and running after his first one got blown up. Artie could only sit back and watch as all his old buddies got to be rich and never really work a day in their lives while he himself settled into the middle class and used his dealings with Tony as his form of rebellion against his status of living. He's desperate to have some actual power in his life, but he's boxing God whenever his next little act of rebellion ends up putting him in the crosshairs of an actual criminal.

In TMSON Artie drives the ice cream truck that he, Tony and Jackie Aprile steals. Artie is the only one worried and says that his father is gonna use the belt on him. His father was also a chef owning a restaurant started in the 30s by Arties grandfather. Tony didn't have the expectations of taking over a legit business like Artie. So the question is really: What made Artie go straight? The family restaurant? Meeting Charmaine? Had Artie gone into the mob, he would have become on of the Bing-guys like Tony, Sil and Paulie and could bang young girls despite being bald. But then he wouldn't have had the restaurant or Charmaine, which probably is the main difference between Tony and Artie - Charmaine set Artie straight, she wanted a law abading life. Carmela wanted nice things, despite where the money came from. Which is why Tony in season 5 contemplates and dreams of Charmaine as a wife - could his life have been different without a materialistic wife who enabled his criminality for her own gain?

By the end, he's put away all his identity struggles, realizes he's not a mobster or a philanderer; he and Charmaine are getting along, Vesuvio is thriving, and he's content being a chef and restaurant owner. Tony and Artie seemed to have this dynamic to me. Each " thought" they might have wanted to live like the other but if that actually happened, misery would have ensued. Tony would have been miserable living like a normal person. He'd be a fish out of water. That's why he and other people like him choose that life and the consequences that come with it. Artie would have money and power but couldn't handle the ugly side of that world. He wasn't built for it. But all In all Artie was a good person. Had morals. Didn't engage in unprovoked violence. He did kick the shit out of Benny( lol). Just easy to loose yourself when your friends with such a towering person like Tony. I think it was funny Artie had a gorgeous wife that was out of his league that he didn't seem grateful for. And it seemed like she knew she was out of his league. Great character who seemed more prominent in the earlier seasons and faded. Thanks for the content.

Artie gets a good character arc, kind of like someone who Christopher believed his life was supposed to be. Artie had flaws but unlike David Scatino, Artie was a good person with flaws, not just a flawed person. Tony at least understood there was an innocence that maybe Artie himself couldn't seen. Artie grew up around trash, so it's not a shock he wanted to be trash until the remorse finally kicks in.

A really good analysis. The sopranos always show you there’s usually more to the characters. Me personally? Artie is not exactly good, but obviously not evil. His relationship with the waitress could be immoral due to it bordering on sexual harassment. Although it’s worth noting she did steal money from him.. In Tony’s dream, coach tells Tony “I told you stay away from the gang including your friend Artie.” Which tells me that Artie was A bad kid growing up and being a close friend to Tony enabled Tony to think like criminal. Obviously Artie didn’t. Most likely a combo of Charmaine, his own personality, and little connection outside Tony to the mob shit down any chance to be a mob guy. Artie wanted the easy money and respect Tony got. But he never seemed to understand jsut how wrong it was. Tony wasn’t respected because of him, he was respected out of fear. As Carmela even once said “those guys aren’t your friends your the boss they have to kiss up to you.” Tony also stole money from guys like Artie including Artie himself. Artie to me acts more like an enabler. He knew fully well like Carmela, like AJ, like meadow, who Tony was even if he never saw Tony do horrible things. But like all those who cross Tony, Tony would sacrifice aerie’s happiness if it meant saving his own ass.

I had a different interpretation of his ending. The last thing Tony told him was that no one in the restaurant liked to talk with him or hear his corny jokes. In the last episode, Artie and Charmane go thank Tony, but it feels cold and insencere. I saw that as Tony using force to make his friends loyal to him, but in exchange, he suppressed the personalities that made them themselves in the first place.

Artie want to be like Tony and the other mobsters, but he didn’t have it in him. Un the end he sees that he’s living a pretty good life he has his own restaurant has a loving wife and three children and really doesn’t have to look over his back like Tony because he’s just a restaurant owner

If Artie didn’t keep trying to sleep with his employees and borrow money from the Mafia his life would’ve been great. Those two things are pretty common sense and low hanging fruits.

As much as I look at Charmaine as a shrewd and an annoyance she truly kept Artie grounded and away from making poor decisions which was needed. We didn’t see much romance between them but had we I think Charmaine would easily be the best wife IMO

I think Artie was a good reflection of the audience. He has a good life that doesn’t have violence in it but he is seduced by the supposed glamour of the mafia. As the series goes on he starts to understand how hollow that life is, he also realised that not being violent and a womaniser isn’t a weakness on his part.

I don't think the point of his arc is to make a verdict on his goodness overall, but more to show a guy who's failing was coveting the wrong things, how that lead to his decline and how he can find his way back.

I can totally understand this character because i lived it. This guy is simply caught between two worlds and as much as he'd love to fall on one side of the fence, he just wasn't cut out or was ruthless enough to ever survive as part of the mafia. I knew early on that theres no way i had any intention of doing years in prison......NO WAY!!! There's varying scales of being a tough man and I drew the line at prison time if i could at all help it. In his case, hes really half a cuck that definitely wouldn't have lasted a day in that life, mostly because he was just stupid and had next to no street smarts. He would've been a very successful restaurateur if he didn't have that underworld distraction all around him😢

Humans are complex, I think some countries focus on Good/Bad and they try to fit everyone in those extremely opposite boxes. Imagine if it it were the same with everything “Hello sir, would you like the XXXL shirt or the XXXS, would you like the piping hot scolding coffee or the frozen one….

I'm sure Charmaine didn't like Tony around because she knew that eventually (1) Artie would know that she fucked Tony, and that Artie wouldn't be able to deal with it; and/or (2) Tony would eventually make an overt play for Charmaine (he was already dreaming about it) Either way, Artie might end up going away. Charmaine saved her husband's life.

I'd agree with that: Artie was essentially a good guy, who like most, 'wanted more than he had', and his reach exceeded his grasp. His weakness was definitely women, but again, who hasn't had their fingers burned by the ladies at least once or twice... 🥴🥴🥴🥴 Overall, he was a bit of a sad-sack, but, in his favor, he was self-aware enough to finally realize it and set himself straight again, so sure, maybe not a goodfella, but a good guy 👍👍👍👍
