Bun E Carlos is literally the reason I became a drummer and later professional musician. I had the honor of meeting him when I was 14 years old at a show back in 1985.

Nothing, absolutely nothing beats the sound of Ludwig Supraphonic snare drum. It cuts through on any recording. I was fortunate enough to have my wife buy me one. I showed her a picture of one I found (late 70s model) for a reasonable price at a Guitar Center in Columbus, Ohio. We live 60 miles from the store and when I got home and told her, she said to get back in the car. We were heading back down there because, even though she knew nothing about drums, she'd been hearing me talk about the Supras for a long time. What sucked was that when we got there and she paid for it, they told us there was a mistake and we had to wait 10 days to take it because it had to clear the police department to assure it wasn't stolen. She kept asking me the whole way down there (while she was scrolling the net to confirm) if it was a good price. I said it was definitely a good price for a Supra of that age with no dents or peeling. With that out of the way, when Cheap Trick replaced Bun, they lost a big part of their signature sound. His unique cadence(s) was so important. Without it, it's not the same.
@bartonpercival321611 ай бұрын
I agree with you 100%. I have only seen Cheap Trick once without Bun behind the drum kit in 2012 when CT was on tour with Aerosmith. And their sound definitely was different and not the same. I've seen Cheap Trick over 25 times live since the first time in 1977 when they were the opening act for KISS. But thankfully I've seen them 24 times with Bun behind the drum kit. I've seen them in many different venues too. From 25,000 filled outdoor stadiums and big arena's to small clubs that hold maybe 500 people. CT's sound is definitely better with Mr. Bun E Carlos on the drums!!!!!!!! 👍🥁

This is a nice collection, and I hope they are displayed in some way and played in the future for the public to enjoy. It's also good to see Bun E. Carlos back in good health. I knew he had serious cardiac issues in the past. I hope he stopped smoking. He has appeared to lost a significant amount of weight. Seems like a good guy. I wish he was playing with Cheap Trick. I saw Cheap Trick live (with Carlos), and they are pure professionals.

Used to think Rick was the collecting loon of the band but Bun E shares his passion. Nice to be able to see it described with such enthusiasm, the envy meter set to overload by sheer volume alone. I wonder if he uses them to any extent, a drum’s beauty isn’t just from its polished exterior, it shines when it’s hit!

In high school in the early 2000’s I had a mod orange snare. Modern Drummer ran an article on Bun E’s collection, where he said he never found one and always wanted one. I wrote the magazine to tell them I had a mod orange snare and wanted to sell to Bun E. They forwarded my number to him, and he called. We did a back and forth, and I sent pics of the snare (slow process on the internet of that time), and he finally made an offer: $900. It was worth more, so I said no and sold it to someone for almost $2K and bought my first truck. Try finding a truck for the price of a snare these days. 😅

*Classy collection.* :-) Any examples of the L-S481 and L-S482 wood snare drums (14" x 5" and 14" x 6-1/2" respectively)? Those models packed the P87 ("Ludwig CLASSIC") snare release with, depending on year of production, either the P31 clamp-bar butt or the P34 fine-tuning butt. (The LC-S483-YX Coliseum drum, 14" x 8", packed the P87, P34, and the L-1110 twelve-wire snare cartridge standard; the L-1108 guts were also available. The LF-T124-DX Challenger, 14" x 12", packed the P87, P34 and L-1108 standard.)

I had to stop drumming and sell my drums when I joined the Army, (1985-2002) then once I got out,had been living in apartments,& couldnt have them yet again. Got caught in Hurricane Karina while was in the Army NG then later USAR(2003-2009), and been disabled & living in a RV so,cant have a set-again(!), but,one day,I will try to save enuff to buy even just a junk set to drum again.Keep saving, but something always "comes up",so, my drumset savings goes down the drain, but,one day, again, I will be happy. And, the drums I really would like is a Ludwig set. I used to HAVE a "Pearl" set, and hated/loved it. Constantly stripped lugs. One day...
@TheJer19638 жыл бұрын
Pick up an electric set. Something cheap like the Alesis DM10X. Not the greatest sound but you can play them without bothering someone else. You can go Roland but be ready to spend some cash, something like the TD30 sounds pretty good.
@CivilAffairsSgt8 жыл бұрын
I'd like to, maybe someday, but I only make $600.18 a month,so ANY set right now is kinda out of my price range, unless its one of those junk sets the pawnshops around Ft Bragg here sell that aren't worth the tree's they cut down to make them,lol I was just able to buy a pair of sticks again, and a practice pad, so that made me happy. If I had it to do over again, I would have stayed with the band, and kept drumming, in any capacity I could...NEVER would have joined the Army,and would not do it again. The only thing that made me happy, even when I was IN the Army, was Drums and drumming. I did,recently,on the way back from my pain doctor, get to stop at a local music store,and they had a few sets up.and the sign said anyone could play them for 10 minutes,so I picked one, and played. THAT was the best day I have had in many,many years! :-) Thanks for the suggestion! I'll get a set (acoustic or electric) one day again....one day...
@TheJer19638 жыл бұрын
You are very welcome. Did 4 years in the Navy myself back in the 80's. I liked it. Hope you feel better. That Alesis set I was talking about would run you around $850. Keep a watch on Craigslist when you get ready to buy.
@CivilAffairsSgt8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the encouragement,and heads u on the Alesis set! Also, thank you for serving. I'm glad you at least enjoyed your tour. I enjoyed my time and what I did I guess, but I wouldn't do it again, and would have been happier as a drummer. Hindsight I guess, right...? PS:My Dad was in the Navy...worked on Rotary(?) engines like DC's and 130's. Was Stationed at McGuire AFB (In the Navy "NATS") in VR-6, He has never forgiven me for joining the Army. No, really,still holding grudge...and I joined in 1985!

I went in 85 too. Loved San Diego. My wife was a Corpsman and I was a ABM (Green Shirt) on the carrier Constellation. My wife went in shorty before me and it ended up where I got to see her every night in boot camp. I wanted to play the drums in boot camp but when asked if I read music I had to say no. Been playing since I was 9 years old, self taught with no lessons. Sorry you didn't care for the Army. I know it isn't for everyone.My father was also in the Navy and my brother is retired from the Air Force after 26 years.
