In this episode, Michelle and Alex compare four meals, side by side, using ingredients from their local market versus from their local grocery store. Markets are a way of life in the Netherlands, but Dutch grocery stores tend to be a bit more convenient. But what's cheaper? And what tastes the best?

The market can be a lot cheaper because it's supply driven rather than demand. If you go to get certain stuff it's about just as expensive, if you look what is cheap because of the season or just because of lots of supply that week and base your recipe on that, it can be a lot cheaper. Also with fish, it's called fishing and not catching for a reason, this doesn't apply to salmon but a lot of North Sea fish strongly varies in price with the catch. Supermarkets also make a lot of profit on what people need to complete their recipe with. Taugé (bean sprouts) for example are 10 to 20 times more expensive in the supermarket. Fresh herbs, Asian, Mediterranean and Carribean herbs, spices and veggies are actually affordable on the market too. Parmesan is hugely overpriced because it's in so many recipes too. Pecorino or an old Dutch hard cheese or a mix is so much more bang for your buck.

There is one good reason to always peel potatoes. Potatoes contain an alkaloid toxin named solanine, which is mostly concentrated in and directly under the skin, but also in green parts of the plant including potatoes exposed to light and bruised parts of the potato. Peeling potatoes allows you to also remove green and bruised parts, thus reducing the intake of solanine. While healthy people don't normally suffer adverse effects from eating potatoes, there have been cases of pretty severe poisoning, so it is better to reduce the risk.

The market used to always be the cheaper option. We even had a saying or a song about it used in commercials: "Op de markt is je gulden een daalder waard". But, why do I go to the market? Only a few things: Cheese, Fruit and Fish. Those are always better. And most people go there for vacuumbags, but also stuff like duvet-covers. And off course you can go there for fresh stroopwafel. PS use chicken thighs for every chicken that is not served as a filet. Múch juicier.

It was Dutch food from Tuesday to Friday but Indonesian food on Saturday and Sunday with leftovers on Monday. Wednesday, for some reason, was always stampot with Meatballs Day. It's said in the comments here already: it really depends on which market you go to. Here in Rotterdam the big market at Blaak is easily half the price if it comes to fruit and vegetables. It's even like 10% of what supermarket prices are if you come at the closing hour of the market. But the prices at my local biological market are easily double that of an Albert Heijn. In all cases: I prefer the market over any supermarket any time.

I just have a little comment for you guys regarding the episode comparing grocery vs. market food. Upfront you guys new what was on your plate. You should not know where the food was from when you are tasting it.....and then guess during tasting where the food was purchased. I just think it is more fair that way. When I lived in Sassenheim I never noticed differences......that is why we watch you guys......we actually got educated. Keep up the good work.🥰😍 Willem.

Interesting comparison, just one thing this video is based on one particular market ( Dordrecht) witch is slightly upscale as far as markets go. Since you lived in Rotterdam you are probably familiar with the Afrikaner market witch is definitely not upscale and doesn’t ( in general) have the highest standards for freshness of food. It will no doubt be cheaper then both the supermarket and the Dordrecht market . There is also quite a difference depending on the day you purchase ( the midweek market is definitely of less quality then the one on Saturday) Perhaps a video comparing markets might be interesting.

I think the meats and fish on the market might also be a fair bit fresher. These products in supermarkets have first spent time in distribution centres getting packaged and stuff. And they may have sat at the supermarket for a few days before you purchase. I would like to shop at the market more often but working full time I hardly have time and on Saturdays, I usually just want to chill. I order my groceries at AH every week and pick them up. I started doing that in 2020 because of Covid and kept doing it because doing the big shop on Saturdays at the supermarket often wrecks my nervous system (I'm neurodivergent) and I often need recovery time.

Market versus supermarket, it Depends on the individual vendor and sometimes Franchische takers of supermarket brands. My local Jumbo in Twello has an attached bakery. At the market you have Bakerij het stoepje. The bread from Jumbo is better. That same Twello market has two greengrocers. One is more expensive but better quality. The other is selling ready packed bags at a lower pricepoint but it is less fresh. Markets can be cheaper than grocery stores. The Zwolle market has better quality vegetables. Unfortunately the choise of vegeteables at the Deventer market is lacking in the vegetable department.

There is one thing that is rarely available in the supermarkets. Ripe, sweet fruit. That is definitely a quality difference between market and supermarket. And, of course it will be only available during the actual fruits harvesting season, where the supermarket will also sell tropical country cherries outside of our growing season. But the really nice, sweet cherries one still finds best at the market.

If i can give you advice on the kip kerrie, try to get genuine Surinaamse Broodjes and the kerrie spice mix from Nandan brand for that traditional taste. Don't add water and let it simmer for 20 minutes (the moisture from the chicken and onion will give enough water to let the spices bond with the rest) But yet again, great video guys!!!

For me quiche is a must, and yeah I'm one of those that loads up, basically any vegetable, meat or fruit can be used. It is just like a posh sandwich and like the tinkering involved. The market by far is the most cost effective when you get to know the stalls, but remember in season veggies are preferred shopping there. PS get quiche forms, both the little ones and the larger ones, mini are perfectly fine for that 4 o'clock crave, the larger one is perfec for dinner.

A predictable outcome, but still lovely to see and hear your reaction. Markets offer food that was less handled and is slightly more fresh. On top of that they have to compete with the supermarkets. Competing in price is difficult, but quality is very doable. I think that explains the difference. Hey and it's more fun to go to the market (well at least when the sun is out :-)). All nicely said and done but in my hometown the market is only on Wednesday (10-17) and as a fulltime working person, 8 hours weekdays with 30 minutes lunch break, I don't have the oppertunity to go the market so I have to rely on supermarkets. And that applies for a lot of people with fulltime office hours jobs. But what I sometimes do is go to a farmstore (Meinardi Noordbroek) on my route from work to home which is open till 18:00 and now in white asparagus season they are also open on Sundays.

As an Australian moving from Adelaide in South Australia to Sydney in New South Wales, fresh produce markets are one of the things I miss the most… the benefits and savings from farm fresh, local, in season fruits and vegetables cannot be overstated. In Australia the fresh produce markets tend to be be significantly cheaper then the supermarket equivalents. There are several reasons for this including the fact that they are normally staffed by the farmers themselves or their family members. Their profit IS their wage, so there’s no additional wage built into the price, along with profits to keep shareholders happy. The cost of having a stall is minimal compared to the rent of a supermarket. They don’t have to pay for storage along the way, and distribution, and haulage. They just throw the extra produce in their car and off they go to market. They often sell just their overproduction, or wonky carrots which get rejected by supermarkets, so it would just get ploughed back into the ground if they didn’t take it to market, so they are prepared to sell it at low prices as they are happy to be making anything at all from the sales. Also, there may be 20 farmers there selling carrots, so competition is high whereas there may be only one or two supermarkets in the area with little or no competition to keep prices down.

Of course I think the most things from the market will be tasting better because it mostly is more fresh than the grocery store. But the price of the grocery store you did pick is mostly the higher than if you did pick a different grocery store. Albert Heijn is known as the most expensive grocery stores in the Netherlands. So the price of the grocery store also depends which grocery store you pick. For the price I would not pick Albert Heijn.

(I watched this 10-month old video as you referred to it in your recent Market vs. Grocery meals video. Besides, I'm a vegetarian, nearly vegan.) My choice of shop could be clear from topography: I have Dirk in lugging distance, Jumbo in Plan-B lugging distance, then Albert Heijn and Vomar just before the nearest market. So it's Dirk first, Jumbo for additional items, and "Appie" for additional additional items. However, I have a few groceries and butchers (what's in a name?) aimed at people with roots in Türkiye, Morocco and Poland in intermediate distances. I won't hesitate to visit these, but I have adapted to Dirk. Or rather: I have managed to spend an average of €50 per week on supermarket purchases for forty years now. Prices elsewhere may feel choking to me. I'll go shopping once a week (basically), and I'll buy different types of vegetables (leaves, stems, fruits) that I'll prepare with basically alternating potatoes and rice, occasionally replaced with pasta or beans. (For a couple of years, I have also been likely to buy pre-cut mixed vegetables.) I also love mushrooms. Once at home, I can be sure of (1) fresh vegetables (and fresh fruit and enough toilet paper) for a week, (2) being within budget (most of the time) and (3) having variety in my diet. A diet that may well be healthy. (Problem: I should eat less or move more.) Special notice: I'll eat Dirk bread for three days, then bake my own for the other four days.

For me the market is cheaper most times, im alone and in the supermarket with some products i always have to buy more than i need, at the market i can buy exactly the amount i need. That's why for me the market food wise is mostly cheaper. I only go to the supermarket for soda's and non food items like cleaning products, toilet paper, etc. But yes i saw the tip go to the market last hour/hour and a half and u can get some good deals!

In general i found the bigest improvent with meat and fish from the marked. Chicken for sure. Generaly chicken from the grocery store contains more water and is a lot more chewy. More often than not there is not a lot of difrends between going to a bakkery or butcher or going to a market. But compared to a groccery store its a world of diffrends.

Wait, you know V in AVG stands for meat? Not fish. We don't know the fritata dish but we do know German Rösti which is basically riced potatoes and beaten eggs usually shaped triangular. You can find them premade mostly in the freezer at german branded grocery stores. We tend to cook them in a frying pan with a little olive oil.

@@buncharted it can be but if we're talking about AVG or AGV, were usually talking about Aardappels, vlees en groente. Mostly sausage, meatballs or thick bacon strips colloquially. (I had to look that word up myself aswell, but that's what G-translate said for "in de volksmond") If we do eat fish, it's usually with baked potatoes.

In Indianapolis, IN, USa the markets are more expensive and usually the same products as grocery stores. Pretty sad. Ten years ago it was different, markets were great here. Now it is just about profit and not quality. Most vendors are selling what is labeled as farm fresh, but it is not from a farm direct.
@rjvanhouten

Remarkable: the market quality might be better, but obviously not cheaper anymore. During the 60s and 70s our town markets used to advertise with the slogan 'Op de markt is uw gulden (ƒ 1,00) een daalder (ƒ 1,50) waard'. Obviously things have changed quite dramatically since then.
