What a coincidence. I was in Enschede just the week after you went. I arrived on April the 20th. I ran the marathon the next day and took a week vacation after. Enschede itself was not that much, as most of the centre burnt down in 1862. I cycled a lot in the surroundings and the countryside around Enschede is very pretty. I do see that I missed some interesting visits in Enschede self.

Things not mentioned: Enschede was one of many small cities (3-5k inhabitants hence the relatively small historic centre) out in the countryside and then industrialisation hit in the shape of the textile industry. Go see Ootmarsum for instance to see such a city that didn't make it into the big league. It also was the last city in the Netherlands that burned down (wars excluded), in 1862.

I worked at the National Telematics institute in the Nearby former Grolsch headquarters. The first few weeks after the explosion you did not hear birds in the area. After a few years working elsewhere I worked in Enschede Roombeek again for a few years until two years ago. The Twente area and nearby Germany are also nice to explore by bicycle. I recommend The castle of Bad Bentheim, the city of Münster. Oldenzaal only for the carnaval.

Welcome to my city. Enschede is also very old, city rights since 1325! but was ofcourse almost totally destroyed during the second world war. You have to come back on a warm summer night and spend your evening on the 'oude markt' the centrum with the church and all the little cafe's and restaurants. There will be live music, and a lot of buzz and people. Its great ! The other thing i like is going outside Enschede en within 5 minutes you are in the 'wood's' > its very green surroundings, lots of quiet places and nature. Its a great day to camp or stay on a camping and go shopping in Enschede.

This reminds me, once on a trip with two friends we were really hungry and drove into some random village for the local Chinese or something, and the only thing there (Zeegse in Drenthe) was a Texas steakhouse. Those friends are food snobs and all the lighting was with huge American flags, I got a bit worried because rural Dutch doing Americana are usually also into dirt racing, tractor pulling, Dutch language country, competitive belching and hardly ever are accumstomed to the finer things. Inside the waitresses had stetson on, jeans, prarie boots, the portable card reader in a pistol holster, peanut shells all over the floor and beer came in half a liter jugs. So we got even more worried. But the rib eye and the tenderloin were excellent (food snobs don't order T-bones), the rest too, absolutely great. Turned out the place had a repution all the way up to the city of Groningen. Never judge a book by it's cover.

Let me add to this: where you were sitting eating the sandwiches, stood the old Enschede Grolsch-fabriek: there was another location in another town, but they wanted to move both locations into one. The fireworks disaster, that damaged/set fire to the factory (and almost blowing two ammonia tanks on the roof to smithereens :-S ) where you were only sped up that process. (And yes, the factory was restored in the meantime; I do not know whether they are still online, but the transport of the gynormous brewing kettles via road to their current location was filmed. It was ... quite the spectacle!)

Look at those sandwiches, amazing! Y'all (you all, how do you say that) are making progress in Dutch! The hardest thing is the 'sch' in, for example Enschede. Michelle you tried, and said ensKede. Did you know that in WW2 the best way to know if others were foreign and not to be trusted (not Dutch) is asking: can you say "achtentachtig kacheltjes"? (eighty-eight heaters). Pronounce was key.

Enschede is not a place with a real old history. It would be a boring city when there was no University. There are places you can visit in the Netherlands that have a real history that goes back to the Middle Ages and are very pleasant.
