Biggest barrier that led to less cheating on battlenet was the game not being free to play back then. Being able to just snag a new account and hop back in has been the biggest issue, even though Battlenet definitely still did a better job overall.

Luckily they are now putting up a pay wall for Trials as well so new accounts can't just jump right in after being banned so this is evidence that they realized how big of a problem FTP was in this regard.

The way the software is implemented. I'm going to summarize here, so I'll try to avoid confusing technical details... mostly. First of all, let's get the "it only runs when you're playing the game" thing out of the way. The kernel driver doesn't quit when you stop playing... it stops actively running, but it's still there, sitting in the kernel, waiting to be activated. To see why it's a problem, first understand that there is the "user" level (which is kind of a "safe" region where applications can run) and a "kernel" level, where the software can do literally anything it wants. This means that kernel code must be extremely high quality. If there's a problem, it's a big deal. This is where the fun begins. Let's say you come across some malicious code somewhere. It's going to be running in user space, which can only do so much. If the BattlEye driver was also in user space, then "exploiting" it wouldn't be a problem. The malicious code already has the same level of access. It wouldn't gain anything, because it would still be stuck in user space. But if there's a flaw in the BattlEye kernel driver, that malicious code can hook into the driver... and now the malicious code isn't contained in user space any more... it's in the kernel. And it, too, now has full control of your system. And having a flaw in kernel drivers isn't unusual. In fact, a large percentage of major vulnerabilities is caused by exactly that kind of flaw. And even big companies that are "good" at security still ship kernel drivers that have similar flaws. A gaming company is not going to fare any better. And that's the best case scenario. It's also possible that BattlEye, through no fault of their own, could be compromised... and send commands to every computer running BattlEye at that time. Now, remember that normally when you update Destiny, new code is going to be run, so it could happen there as well. But that would be running in user space. Would you prefer malicious commands to be run in the more "contained" user space, or would you like them to run in the kernel instead? And maybe you think it's unlikely that a central controller like that could be taken over and used to send malicious commands to everything listening to it. Well, it happened just recently - just look up the "REvil Kaseya attack". So how can we actually stay safe? Well, we can't. Not if we run BattlEye. If BattlEye ran using user privileges, there wouldn't be (as big of) an issue. But running as a kernel driver opens up much worse possibilities. Instead of mounting security cameras on and around your house in strategic locations, you've put a fully-armed security robot inside your house, given it permission to do whatever it wants, and put a remote control outside. But hopefully nobody ever tries to use it. As long as BattlEye's developers are absolutely perfect, then we're all safe. But if not (and they aren't) then heaven help anyone running BattlEye. Bottom line: treat your gaming computer as only a gaming computer, and never put any personal information on it that you wouldn't want exposed.

Well said, but I would point out one more important factor. Kernel level apps are potentially dangerous to PC performance in the long run. These apps accumulate cache over time and must be regularly cleared to ensure your system's processor. The key question is how detailed does Battleye enable its users to access and modify. From what I have read thus far, not very detailed. Hence, users lack the control over our very own systems. But again, this is a "potential" scenario.

@@livv_the_mainecoon_cat As I previously said, it can be relatively safe If the programmers and game developers implement it properly, I don't know much about the people who developed that particular game, But if it's a triple-a title they probably are decent, And also as I previously said, don't do much else in the way of privacy Sensitive tasks on your gaming PC. That being said you're probably better off Just Not using it. If you're running windows And regularly update Microsoft has pretty decent anti viral properties. Another pretty Safe way to game is on console.

@@WishYouLuckk What I find fascinating is that it can't be too horrifically hard to implement a fire-rate cap... Like, yes... closet-cheating sucks, but it's the ones that are just there to watch the game burn are the ones to watch out for, and the solution seems super simple, in theory. They have all the "Fire rate" on the weapons and in the database; "if weapon fires more than X amount of times, then immediately restrict/flag the account for moderation". I did software development for five years, and the solution seems rather simple, but knowing the absolute mess their engine is, it wouldn't surprise me if it's impossible to do. Hell, if that's a logistical issue? Use the Magazine size value. If gun doesn't have ambitious assassin, and they don't have plans to re-introduce auto-loading, then "if X weapon fires more than X rounds before being reloaded, then ban/flag account".

Yeah, they never had a traditional one, and it was never a surprise. They just called their slow, sometimes nonexistent periodical manual review that their security team does a form of anti-cheat, when it hardly is one compared to something like Battleye, Easy Anti-Cheat, or that rootkit that Valorant installs (seriously, Valorant sus).

The way they’ll stop recovers is the solo trails route. No more “I didn’t know” they’ll just seat people who did the recovs so then customers start to dry up along with a more efficient wipe of cheating accounts. Hopefully this is how Bungie is thinking or else we could be just back at square 1.

last few weeks i played alot of comp. encountered just a few obvious cheater. but like every other game there were these awkward accounts with 0.7 kd and unbroken and 32xflawless. i checked game history, 100s of games with 000 zero kills. i hope matchmaking gets overhauled in general.

only issue i have is the battlenet thing because... well look at warzone its chaos god mode with hipfire spin bot aimbot.... i think it has to do with the ease of getting into the game f2p games have this very same issue and destiny has this problem too, account making systems should be getting stricter (warzone has done this recently banned all the loop hole simcard providers for 1$), none the less im happy for a anti cheat even if its "bad" as everyone says now im just waiting for warzone owo

I'm optimistic to be honest. Best believe there will still be cheaters, that shit isn't going away. But this shit will definitely tone it down and act as another deterrent to closet cheaters especially. Basically, I expect a lot of "good" players to suddenly get worse.
