@@KGB240 True, Mini isn’t “high end” at all. But I was very impressed with playing No Man’s Sky on my M1 Max. When compared to my gaming PC (RX 6900 XT with 5800X3D) the M1 is not a joke. It feels about half the speed; but that’s not bad for a mobile device drawing a fraction of the watts. Of course that’s just one very optimized game. I’m just excited about the potential. Especially if you compare a Mini to say a Steam Deck or a more average gamers system that doesn’t cost $2K+.

Started playing Marathon with Aleph One ports after watching the old Bungie vidoc while looking for more Halo 3 content. Loved them (even though I was frustrated with some parts), but I never really carefully read them. Then I played Myth 1/2 and ONI later, and definitely love those games. Years later, MandaloreGaming releases a synopsis of the trilogy and that’s where I started to become more appreciative of old Bungie outside of Halo. The old Bungie has this really Mystical feel to all of their games: the soundtrack for Myth 1 and 2 are great and ONI, looking past the americanime aesthetic, has a pretty interesting story. I just don’t feel this mysticism in Destiny 1 or 2 as if they suddenly lost their shine. I am cautious for the new Marathon, but really, Why can’t they just make a single player experience with multiplayer as a bonus feature.

I wish that instead of giving us an extraction shooter Bungie would’ve just remade the Marathon trilogy akin to the System Shock remake. That would’ve been awesome. Unfortunately, we didn’t get that. I know Aleph One is a thing, but most people play on consoles and a remake that stays mostly faithful while fixing various issues with the original would be able to introduce new people to the series. Sadly, modern Bungie has completely lost its way and the new extraction shooter most likely won’t be able to capture the magic of the original. I unfortunately haven’t played the games, but I watched MandaloreGaming’s videos on them. All I can say about the INSANE story is wow! Too bad the level design was pretty bad. That seems to have dragged down some otherwise AMAZING games. From what I hear the newer Macs are powerful enough to run most AAA games. The reason why we don’t really see Mac gaming is because Apple doesn’t really support third party software that allows various games to run, the player base is basically nonexistent, and developers don’t invest in Macs because the market is so small. Hopefully this changes, but I’m not going to hold my breath for that. There’s rumors about them buying EA, but that isn’t very likely. It would definitely be interesting if that happened. This next part is copy and pasted from a comment I said on another video, but my point still stands so I’ll use it: I really like how you threw shade on Act Man’s dumpster fire video. I honestly really hope he keeps making atrociously bad videos like that where he’ll get a lot of backlash so we can see him cope and sneed on Twitter. I will admit that I mostly play on consoles and don’t know much about the genre since it’s not really my thing. But even I someone with a mostly surface level knowledge of the genre and its history was able to tell that he got almost everything wrong. It really calls into question the accuracy of his other videos seeing how bad that one was. We now know that his masculine dude bro persona is just something he puts on for the camera and he’s an insecure manchild who cannot take criticism🤣. I remember I used to really like and respect the man and when the QuantumTV disaster happened I was firmly on his side but thought that he kept going about things in the absolute worst way possible (making a “joke” about doxxing KZbin employees. Sperging out at anyone who even slightly disagreed with his regarded methods and accusing them of being a Quantum shill/pro Quantum, even though those same people were pretty brutal in their condemnation of Quantum. And stuff like going after Quantum for ToS violations despite the face that he and his squad have broken the rules on occasion). Then I did a little bit of research and realized that he and his squad (den of snakes) were collectively just as cancerous as Quantum. If you take the long list of things he’s done, Act Man and his crew have each done a few of those. Honestly, the first major red flag was the fact that Ant Man chose ReviewTechUSA as his right hand man when they were going after Quantum. Rich has a long history of flip flopping, ragging on DSP and Wings for ebegging despite the fact he’s just as bad if not worse than both, he’s a false flagger, he doxxed his trolls/critics, he’ll clickbait whatever thing gets him the most views and just keeps milking it (remember the fabled Switch Pro), is pro censorship and cries if what he wants to have happen to other people is applied to him, and some other things I can’t remember off the top of my head (a lot of these are the same exact things they criticized Quantum for). Just look up ReviewTechUSA Exposed or Junk Media reuploads and you’ll see what I mean. It really shows you the kind of character and level of intelligence Act Man has that he was willing to work with a man we have YEARS of evidence against purely to spite somebody else. Act Manchild and Quantum deserve each other and to become lolcows for what they’ve done. It’s amazing just how big of a hypocrite with massive double standards Ant Man is. Wow! Great video. I will be sure to check out your other stuff.

Your comment might be longer than my script, but a good read! I always thought The Examined Life of Gaming's review of Marathon four years ago was the end-all-be-all of Marathon reviews. No one else had to do one after that, including me. Quick tip! - If a Marathon reviewer calls it a Doom-clone, that basically discredits it, and I'd move on. For the record, I didn't mind the level design in Marathon, though Infinity maps were not as memorable or replayable to me (my map is an exception, of course!). The problem(s) with Marathon, at least from my perspective of growing up at the time, are two-fold: (a) for most youths, the Macintosh was the computer that the schools used, where the most intensive gaming allowed to be installed was maybe Word Munchers or Oregon trail. Even in the 2000's, it was basically the workstation where Photoshop was installed because everyone and their dog knew that Adobe preferred the MacOS by a country mile; and (b) _If_ you play through any given Halo on the legendary difficulty, you got a bonus cutscene after the credits. Well, at the end of 3, the cutscene for it implied that the chief was going into a deep sleep for some grand hunt. I did enough reading to put two and two together and... *Halo was basically the glossy prequel trilogy to Marathon!* And for some reason, that just turned me off to the series wholesale. I was already upset with Bungie proclaiming they _invented_ twin stick shooting controls for FPS on consoles, when Alien Resurrection by Argonaut software did the same schema about three full years before the first Halo even came out. But because Halo was the de-facto franchise for frat bros before Call of Duty multiplayer, everyone took Bungie's word as gospel and completely ignored evidence to the contrary. That and some... _stubbornness to player feedback_ in the community more or less had me check out of even giving Marathon a chance at all. Last, but not least, I've never had a Mac of any kind. So I never had a way of playing the game to even care. Ironic then, that modern Apple would arbitrarily block Steam as of Catalina. Not sure if it's been fixed since, but the uproar combined with the blithe dismissal from Apple? How can I _not_ think it was done deliberately?

Really cool! But it is a bit disappointing that the new Marathon won't be on Mac...id think the Apple silicon Macs could probably run it if they optimized the code well! The trailer is noting but amazing in terms of art direction and even some worldbuilding bits. It's absolutely mesmerizingly cool and stylish, and that's something you can't take away from Bungie. Apple’s fault for “not making an affordable machine that can handle high end gaming”. I disagree. An M2 Mac Mini for $600 has a 10 core GPU that is likely capable of running a PVP extraction shooter like the new Marathon. And with Apple’s newly released DX12 testing tools; it’s never been easier to port DX12 Windows games to Metal on Mac. Pretty much any Apple Silicon Mac is an above average gaming machine if the developers take the time to support Metal (assuming average PC gaming machine is running something like a 1060 looking at Steam charts).
@sparkly9294 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it really does seem like Apple has paved a road straight to making Macs back into viable modern gaming machines, and there are some pretty recent titles like Resident Evil VIII purchasable on the app store for M1 and M2 machines. Whether or not anyone will target the new platform is anyone's guess.

The problem isn’t the hardware…it’s the developers and publishers. There simply isn’t enough Mac gamers to give most of them a reason to make proper metal ports. However, I feel like in some due time more gamers will see Mac laptops as a good portable gaming solution because of the outstanding battery life they have that gaming laptops simply lack.
@65scribe Жыл бұрын
Very interesting. I'm so used to hearing about PC gamers putting $1500 graphics cards in their machines, I figured it put Apple out of the running. (Really putting myself out there, I know).
@themacintoshnerd Жыл бұрын
I mean yeah it could but Apple gives game devs zero reasons to port their games and zero reasons to encourage people to play games on Macs. Reasons for developers like: The removal of 32-bit Intel app support showing Apple is ok with breaking compatibility with their games The deprecation of OpenGL (showing Apple isn't willing to use an industry standard graphics API in macOS) The refusal to adopt vulkan (again showing Apple isn't willing to use an industry standard and also showing that Apple doesn't care about tools like proton helping the Mac as a gaming platform) The fact metal is closer to a mobile graphics API like OpenGL ES than it is Vulkan or DirectX you can put this effort into a port for many other systems that is gonna make way more money (Macs are not a market share leader, more over out of the people who own Macs few play games on them a PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC hell even iOS port have the potential to make way more money) These all work against developers wanting to port their games to the Mac. why on earth would you want to hire developers to work on porting your games renderer to Metal and optimizing your game to work on the mac because there is no other alternative (besides moltenvk but that has it's own issues with the sometimes major differences between Vulkan and Metal look up the Ryujinx blog post talking about this) because Apple refuses to add Vulkan or at least modern OpenGL just for Apple to maybe break compatibility with it in just 5-10 years and not be able to sell it to new Mac owners at all. People don't want to game on their Macs for other reasons like: Apple's included input devices are terrible for games (try gaming on a trackpad or magic mouse and the magic keyboard is unacceptable in a desktop especially for games) Apple killing support for older games like 32-bit ones (bought Halo for Mac? guess you're out of luck unless you have a later PPC Mac or Intel Mac that can run High Sierra because even though it works on Mojave it's too bugged to be playable) Games like Resident Evil Village are exclusive to the Mac App Store (Going back into my previous point games on steam include all versions of the game for desktop that are on steam. I own half life 2 on steam and have access to all versions of the game no matter what. So even though the Mac App Store version is no longer supported I can run the Windows version in a VM or in CrossOver. If/when Apple breaks RE:Village from working on the Mac there's no recourse besides keeping a secondary OS install or having a completely separate Mac to play that version.) This has created a feedback loop of "triple a games on the mac are a waste of money for everyone involved" that Apple hasn't really broken in anyway with Apple Silicon. Sure the computers are great I have the exact Mac mini you mentioned and I love it. For the $500 dollars I spent on it (thanks to having my student ID with me when I bought) it's an amazing little machine. and it plays the games I want it to mostly. some of my favorites don't work namely doom eternal and some PC ports don't work under Parallels or CrossOver because neither Rosetta 2 or Windows on ARM support AVX instructions nor does any FOSS solution on Linux work either (at least one that I'm aware of, Asahi's FEX doesn't anyways) tldr: Apple has the pieces and a way to make the mac decent for games they just need to put them together instead of being stubborn about it.

@@themacintoshnerdGreat points! Apple has certainly made a lot of questionable decisions in the gaming space. I am hopeful Metal 3 is beginning to correct some of what you describe. I don’t know what a PVP Extraction Shooter is. “The only way to win is not to play” - yes! That works for me. The overall effect of the video is still calming, reassuring. I love it.

Unaware of the invasion? The other 9 Mjolnir Mark IVs fought off the ground invasion and the whole colony got glassed from orbit. Time for some heavy retcons I guess... (then again, can you imagine them remaining slaves to the original Marathon lore? A fool's errand at best...)
@65scribe Жыл бұрын
It will be easy to retcon, since Marathon Infinity was a huge retcon, deleting the events of Marathon 2 and throwing the events of Marathon into question due to alternate timelines. Regardless, you’re right about the 9 cyborgs. I was just pointing out that, according to the background information for the new game, the earth and mars government are so far away from Tau Ceti, they have no idea the invasion happened and they are investigating. Likewise, we don’t really know if the colony got totally destroyed by the pfhor or not. It is a fascinating premise, but will new Bungie ruin the opportunity?
@NewExile Жыл бұрын
@@65scribe My bad, I thought you meant the Tau Ceti colony was unaware of the invasion. I must have misheard. In any case I think it's inevitable that they mess with the lore - Halo threw off the shackles of old lore for a reason, I think the same holds true here. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Marathon lore and I even managed to shoehorn some Gherrit White into my high school exams, but ultimately I think the only way forward is to write new lore and retcon as necessary. My real problem with the new Marathon is that they've taken a studio that's famous for narrative-driven single player campaigns and an IP that's famous for being The Most Narrative-Driven Single Player Campaign Of All and they're making... a competitive multiplayer extraction shooter. They're taking the storied gem that is Marathon and they're trying to sell it to Tarkov players. What an absolute waste...
@65scribe Жыл бұрын
@@NewExile I agree with all that. They seem to have found an excellent set-up to build a new story and modern sequel to Marathon, but decide to use a game type that does not lend itself to story telling. It’s like the lore in Unreal Tournament or Fortnite. Completely forced and ridiculous. But I like that Gheritt White ended up in your high school exam submission.
@NewExile Жыл бұрын
@@65scribe See I actually thought the lore in UT worked pretty well, at least the Liandri stuff. I’ve mostly forgotten the Nekris and war stuff, but the way most of the arenas wind up being abandoned corporate endeavours added some interesting context. But all that aside, yes, it seems the whole structure of a Tarkov-style extraction shooter puts taking the time to show any interest in the lore firmly in last place.

The M1 macs are absolutely capable of high end gaming. What Apple haven't done is allow a competent and industry-standard API like Vulkan within sniffing distance of their OS. Deprecating OpenGL support on Mac OS was the final kick in the guts to gaming on the mac, but guys, guys, they're super serious about gaming for realisies this time, they promise!

I am so extraordinarily disappointed with the new game not having a single player campaign and being whatever the hell an "extraction shooter" is. I don't play games where my enjoyment is dependant on the actions or inactions of other people, so that means pretty much anything multiplayer. What's the point of using an existing IP if you're just going to ignore everything that made the original IP a success? Who are you trying to attract doing that?
@RyDawg96 Жыл бұрын
I literally have no idea what an extraction shooter is either.
@StarkRG Жыл бұрын
@@RyDawg96 As far as I can tell it's a scavenger hunt with guns. You're trying to get a thing, other people are trying to get a thing, they could be the same thing, I'm not sure, they'll kill you to stop you getting your thing so you probably want to kill them back to stop them getting theirs. It sounds simultaneously mindnumbingly boring and extraordinarily frustrating.

I agree. I would rather play against the game and not other users. Marathon 1 set them up beautifully to do something great on Tau Ceti. I'm not convinced this is it.

Nu-Marathon looks like it was made by and made for the soyboy youtuber mentioned in your video. Apropos of that, your videos are approximately 1000x more interesting that that guy. Maybe you're a fan of his, but yeeech. Remember, the art of being a youtuber is to create engagement and making subtle, but egregious errors is a fantastic way to fill a video with "engagement" in the form of comments, likes and dislikes. I simply ignore "youtubers". Still not excited for Nu-Marathon and kindof annoyed because of the name tbqh. They could have chosen a different name, instead of "REMEMEBER THIS GAME FROM WHEN YOUR WERE A KID?!"
