Sadly the water tower on trinity road burned down yesterday. I live near it and watched as the roof collapsed:(

We did sadly see this in the news. Wonder what will come of the building now…

@@BeyondthePoint I think it gradely depends on if the building is deemed structurally unsafe or not. They have had crews of people out there the past couple days. If it isn’t safe they will probably knock it down if it is safe let’s hope the new attention to that building sees it properly restored

Just enjoyed watching your tour of Sheppey Bunkers. I used to live in Sheerness and over 55 years ago now I used to play in the bunkers at Sheerness. There were no boundary fences then We used to roam all around the docks. The old fort was really interesting. We also had all the military places of the Well Marsh to play in then. Thanks

Interesting video of my home island . I know these sites well . What do you mean by ' minefield control ' . How would they have controlled the minefields ? Many other small military sites on the island . When you came into sheerness you would have gine over the ' Canal Bank ' whuch was part of the rear dockyard defences . There is still remnants along the beach at minster of the Boom Defence . This was an anti submarine net that went right out into the Estuary, and similarly from the southend side . Some of the supportive struts still survive . There are a number of decaying amphibious vehicles there . Sheppey was realky a garrusin island and was known as Barbed Wire island in WW1 . Many historic buildings were lost in the dockyard when the RN pulled out in about 1960 . I have been told that there are two battleship -sized dry docks still in the dickyard that were just filled in . The diockyard church is now finished . A fantastic job dine by the Spitalfields Trust ( amongst others ) . Mike Palin:s son Will was heavily involved - so well done him . That wonderful area you looked at next to the church is famous for hosting small scorpions in the walls !

Brilliant video guys! I was born and raised on the Isle of Sheppey and spent the first 18 years of my life there. When I was a kid you could get all the way around to the docks by walking along the beach. That access has long been closed off. There were a lot of bunkers and gun shelters along there. Also as you got around Garrison point there was a tower similar to the one on the Isle of Grain. As kids we would go up to the top of it. It was in bad shape even then and you could feel the thing move as you walked across. You could also get onto the Garrison fort itself from there though you had to be careful not to be seen since the watch tower was right there. We spent a lot of time there exploring. A pity a lot of that has been torn down or is just inaccessible. Anyway this bought back some fun memories. Cheers guys.

You can get to the Warden Bay Bunkers via the leas, just keep walikng the beach coastline and you'll come to them, also you've got some old bunkers at Barton Point, there's one more bunker near elmley nature reserve, turn right go to the bottom and on the right near the small little lake there is a Bunker. me and my son cut 2 thins off 2 old bombs that had been defused and were quite rotten, the rumour was that farmers had tried to drag them in but had failed.

It would have been worth timing your visit to Warden with low tide, so that you could have explored the ruins properly. Apart from the gun battery you saw, there are also 2 buildings that were part of a chain home low radar station (the other 2 further along the beach), and a pile of rubble that contains the remains of an acoustic mirror.

Pre fabs were just that a house was pre built then erected from the parts elswhere,my aunt lived in one even in the 1950s because asbestos back then wasn't seen as a hazard it is today ,yes asbestos !the complete bungalow was asbestos clad over an iron frame .The sections were pre made shipped to the building site then bolted together in a very short time ,thousands were built to house bombed out Londoners ,there were also corrugated iron pre fabs the village we used to live in had a (now gone) part locally called 'tin town' .Plenty of bunkers in this village it sits on the GHQ line ,worth a google!
@BeyondthePoint2 жыл бұрын
Indeed a lot of the original prefabs were made nearly entirely of asbestos and wood - still a lot left in the Excalibur Estate in Lewisham. There are some aluminium prefabs in Chelmsford still holding up well similar to what you describe.

I would say that sounds reasonable, although we’ve known places before to have been raided on the news and all the junk has still been there years later. Thanks for the kind words!

Omg, I went in there a couple years back. None of that was there. How did they get that in there without people knowing? It’s absolutely crazy lol. I mean that’s sheerness for you haha 😂. I lived there for 13 years its a classical place of Kent lol, murders,drug use, etc all happens in Sheerness.
