Hey Brian! Fellow Ankeny RC flier here. I own this exact fogger and use the same fogger spray as the skeeters on our little acreage get pretty insane, and I'm sure this flood fallout issue isn't going to help with that. This thing actually does work REALLY well at controlling them. Regular applications keep my land 90% mosquito free, and any difference in the right direction is a huge difference if you ask me. One tip for ya, I used that yellow canister on my first one and just left it on with fogger in it while storing, it seems the metal they use to make the liquid pickup is not stainless and my first fogger rusted up and no longer worked by the end of the summer. So I ordered another and this time I used typical mason jars as this fogger accepts the same threads, then pop the jar off when you are done, cap the jar and let the fogger pickup air dry, no issues using that technique for over 2 years on my second one.

Oh, and I also built me a couple bat houses out of cedar and hung them up at the far ends of the property, it took about a year but the bats moved in and quickly went to work filling their bellies full of these annoying blood suckers, I think that defiantly helped out. Between the bats and the fogger I'm able to enjoy my deck and evening flight time!

Thanks for the pointer!!! I've been EXTREMELY happy with the results - on the 4th we were out and virtually no mosquitoes at our front and back yard, then we walked behind the house to the cul-de-sac and it was like mosquito-Armageddon!!!

Yes, very. In a small residential are, it's AWESOME. Where we are now, on 10 acres, it's different, but I often times fog the garage when we're done working in it, for the evening, and we come out to literal piles of bugs - SUPER GROSS, but awesome all at the same time.

If you were in close quarters, you would probably want to have a mask. The fog is easy to avoid, if you're being careful, and staying upwind, you just have to be careful not to "paint yourself into a corner".

Here in west Houston, around Memorial Drive (kinda upscale area), we have a city pickup truck come around about once a week during skeeter season. The bed of the truck has a large-scale version of your hand held fogger. No idea what chemical they use. Usually comes after midnight and fogs literally square miles of the area and really keeps the skeeter population down. I always put a couple of drops of motor oil in any puddle of standing water. Research says that just a molecule-thick layer of oil keeps mosquitoes from breeding. I hate those bloody things.
@BrianPhillipsRC6 жыл бұрын
I do too! We had the skeeter trucks here before, but I can't say I've seen one for years! So far, the yard was about 95% better for the 4th of July evening celebration. It was like walking into a swamp across the back yard in our backyard neighbors cul-de-sac...It definitely worked!!! We're very pleased, and we ALSO had a much better day dealing with mosquitoes at our land, where we Fogged. It's not a 100% solution, but it's at least a 90-95% improvement. I couldn't believe it!
@raymondkoonce58276 жыл бұрын
Outstanding! it's nice to spend your money on something that actually works. I've been wondering, are you thinking of a mobile home while your new house is being built? That was a road I took in the early '90s when we built our lakeside house. Worked out pretty well for us.
@BrianPhillipsRC6 жыл бұрын
We have been toiling over this aspect of the many, many tough decisions we need to make. My wife stays at home with the kids and home schools them...all FOUR of them...so being at home in the winter [hopefully not, but potentially] makes this choice even tougher. Then we juxtaposed a trailer to actually moving into a small house or apartment and which is also cringe-worthy. If they went to school or work outside of the home each day, this would be better tolerated, but since they're home all the time, we've been challenged to figure out how to make this happen. ...to be totally honest, it's a tough call. We hope timing works out perfectly, but we can't say that it will...in fact, we pretty much expect that it WON'T. Sometimes the only option is to be uncomfortable for a short time...which is easier for adults to do, then children.
@raymondkoonce58276 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is a tough call. We raised 5 kids, and it was a job and a half. The lake house was our concession to 4 of them being teens at the time. 3,500 sq. ft. in 3 stories and it really turned out to be barely big enough. The mobile home was just a standard 65 footer for the 6 month build, and that got small in a hurry. We also had no major winter to contend with, thank goodness. It turned out well over the long haul, though. Good for you on the home schooling. Don't know about Iowa, but Texas public schools at the time were not the greatest, so we elected for home schooling. My wife had a teacher's certificate and a BA in business, while I had the MSEE. Those helped a good bit. The kids are in their late 40s now and have done pretty well. None in the soup lines, anyway. You'll make the choice that's right for you, I have no doubt.
@BrianPhillipsRC6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Raymond! My wife also has a BA in teaching, and she was a teacher too. Seems we share many parallels. So you all lived in the mobile home for about 6 months. Did you rent it or buy it?

What do your neighbors think?
@BrianPhillipsRC6 жыл бұрын
So far, so good. I talked with them before we got started and they were fine with it. I suspect that if they had no idea what was going on they might be annoyed. If it were really calm, you might be able to keep the "fog" a little more controlled. So far it's been working to keep the mosquitoes to almost gone (I think I swatted two or three times TOTAL...usually about 2-3 times per Minute!!!), but we've only had a couple days of testing. I'm very skeptical about these type of treatments, but even at our (soon to be) new land, where the mosquitoes were Crazy, we had great success so far....but again, only a long day of exposure. We really hope it lasts for a few weeks, then we can just do a treatment when things start getting really annoying again.

Oh my... Recalls memories (none fond) of spraying acreage. Might wanna check your County Abatement Depts. They might have 'loner spray equipment' to get you started. And buy your chemicals direct from a local wholesaler. You'll likely (might) be required to verify some low-level type of licence (easily obtainable from the State) before wholesaler will sell to you. Worthwhile only if abatement (mosquito/rodent/weed) is costly. Oh, the fun of Country Living. :)

yeah, it's not super cheap, but if I have to spend a few hundred dollars a year to keep them at bay, I will be doing that :) I think once we get moved, out there, we'll figure out the spots of the yard that we really MUST treat, then leave the rest for special occasions. Bugs are a fact of life, but we're still VERY excited to get out there!!

Grape Jelly I just used mine for the first time and the directions say to only pull the trigger once every 4 seconds or so. This way you don't pump out more of a mist or a "wet" fog instead of a dry fog. If you have too much coming-out of the front it could come out as straight liquid which causes the flame.

Be careful with insecticides, you can end up with an unbalanced population of insects were you kill also the natural predators of the ones you don't like. The best thing is to help the natural predators thrive so they keep the unwanted population under control. I am thinking more on your new land. Help frogs, spiders, lizards, hummingbirds ( they actually eat a lot of insect too not just nectar) an other birds thrive. Here in my apartment there is a spider we always let alone because it eats the only venom spider that can and leave here and it works very well. The only time we used insecticide was very bad because when the effect was lost the bad spider thrived more than the good one, so we actually ended up bringing the good one in again in big quantities and now we don't need to poison hour home. Poison is poison and it is bad for your health, even though vendor would make you believe other wise. I really hate mosquitoes but for me the best thing is to get inside the house some good mosquito electro shocking lamps.
@BrianPhillipsRC6 жыл бұрын
I think they're worse than usual right now with the heavy rain, so hopefully it won't be an ongoing, but rather a seasonal issue. P.S. I agree that poison is best to avoid, but I could spray out there for 10 hours a week, and I guarantee you there's still millions of mosquitoes :) The bats will still be happy!

Brian Phillips yes one of my good friends just stopped playing a couple years ago and two other friends moved to California and so I don't play as much as I used to either
@BrianPhillipsRC6 жыл бұрын
For me, it was more about the competition with my friends. I know a few guys who will play alone, but I just had zero desire to loose proof of a great drive, or an awesome put - LOL! Also, there's NOTHING like loosing a perfect driver, then replacing it with the EXACT weight driver, then having it throw totally, completely different - that pissed me off! We have one course where we throw OVER a rather large pond, and it would eat disks! Another, 300 to 400 foot with about 12 foot wide paths - SERIOUSLY!!! - DISK EATERS!!!...... plus there's the time component. I was actually away from the family for 3 or 4 hours minimum per weekend, at PRIME times. My wife was very understanding with it, and to be totally honest, it was good for my health, but just a lot of trade-offs that didn't add up for me anymore. ....BUT, at my new land, we hope to have bought in the next few weeks...it just SCREAMS, disk golf course ;) Maybe one of those 3-4 hole courses with several different start pads, to make a 9 hole course? If we do this, I'll definitely post about it.
@spikedart6 жыл бұрын
When I lived in Las Vegas I learned to play and liked it so much I threw away both sets of golf clubs. I had to get people from work into the game, but usually would go to a course and try to jump in with a few people or other singles. I hate finding a disk I love and beating it up until it flies just right and then losing it. I don't attempt anything more than 300 feet over water. It's just not worth it and I only own one floater. My now ex-wife bought me a practice discatcher for Christmas like the one you have but didn't like to play the game. Like you I have found myself (starting this year) wanting to fly and getting out most mornings after work when the weather is usually calm. Still haven't taken the new Apprentice out yet but really looking forward to it. You should definitely set up a small 3 or 4 tee course where you can play many different ways. I wish you all the luck with the land. It's going to be a huge undertaking but I think you all are up for the challenge. -Bill

That's a nice idea, but you gotta keep in mind how much this liquid weighs. I've been thinking it'd have to be a 1.5m at minimum, then I'd have to get a smaller propane tank and a smaller liquid reservoir, then there's the open flame......which is not super easy to deal with on a foam plane :)

I thought it worked well. I still use it in my 3 car garage (at our new house) when I'm going in for the evening...it knocks down thousands of bugs in the garage.
