Join us on todays video called "Buried Ancient Path Uncovered On Our Homestead Ireland" as we continue the mundane job of digging a trench to make a pathway behind the 200 year old stone outbuilding at our homestead in Ireland. As Dawn digs, she uncovers a hidden ancient path that has been untouched for centuries under the built up dirt and debris from the farm. What used to be a path was covered over with time but is now unearthed for us to see and use once again. This ancient path serves as a reminder of the rich history that surrounds us, just waiting to be discovered.
With soaked land being an issue, we take advantage of the ancient pathway and ensure water can flow freely of the stones lining the floor. Once done, we move on to the large mounds of earth, raking and digging we achieve a flat raised area as planned and a path through.
Being complete beginners at farmhouse renovation and really needing a homesteading for beginners guide, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse
There is something for everyone on The Corner House Project channel, if you subscribed for the derelict house renovations or just for the homestead, we will bring the smiles, you sit back and relax and let us do the work.... well, Dawn will do the work.
Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more homesteading and house renovation adventures!

😂 I meant to say that I can't wait to see what you unearth! Typo! I don't think it works like that Ben, you have to graft to get fit, not stand there watching Dawn do it! I have a question about the ditches, I'll save it for the next video's comments. Enjoy your weekend.

That is hundreds of years of decomposed ivy and other plant growth, probably manure from old farm animals that used to be there probably chucked out the back windows, and everything else! That’s going to be some very healthy soil for gardening though! I love watching your progress and it makes me wish I could be there to help. Beautiful work you two! 😊💚✨

Good afternoon to you over there, how are you? You are right, our farmer neighbour, not that one, the other one lol, only said yesterday when I asked him what he though it was, he said the same, probably more dung than anything else, but oh yes, things should really grow. You know the sofa bed is still here, an extra pair of hands is always welcome lol. Fly over with Oklahoma Jackie lol. Thank you so much as always :-)

Great work at freeing the path to your doorway and an easier out as you said! Before you put in any permanent wall, you might want to see how that third outbuilding aligns and drains. Since you have the space I would make sure to keep those paths nice and wide in case, in the future you might need to get in some machinery, or scaffolding to help you rebuild. Great job as always, thanks for sharing!

Hi Suzanne :-) " Since you have the space I would make sure to keep those paths nice and wide in case, in the future you might need to get in some machinery, or scaffolding to help you rebuild" We love this and both looked at each other and went... ahhh, yes. So thank you for this, a great idea. I smashed my head so many times on the stone lintel when we were pushing the wheel barrow through, digging down through that pile was a pleasure. I must admit, I did duck the first time I walked though the door out of habit. The gap between the two buildings, by the ditch used to be called "The sink" What we have cleared at the land end of the sink let rain water flow really well but we are yet to clear it out properly. It is full of massive stones and dirt. After reading the comments tonight, it could be possible there may be another "path", but we are not sure. Maybe just wishful thinking. Thank you so much Suzanne for watching and commenting:-)

Great work guys. You really are hard at it. Amazing to see the old path coming up. Genealogy has been a major hobby of mine for nearly 40 years. I find it fascinating to think of the people who constructed that building and walked up and down that path so many generations ago. They would have lived in a very different world to the one we live in today. I know you've looked into the history of the house and land. Have you checked it out on Griffith's Valuation? There are maps that go along with it that show exactly where the house was and who was living there in the mid 1800s. From there you can check out the local parish registers and on into the civil record database and the 1901 and 1911 censuses etc.. If you want any pointers, just let me know. Keep up the good work. ;)
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 6 ай бұрын
Thank you! It’s been a hard slog but to see all the things like the path appear and those big flag stepping stones has made all the hard work worthwhile. Oh my goodness, yes, you and me both with the genealogy! I love it, I started my family tree about 20 years ago now and I just love it, all the piecing the information together to find out who’s who! I love anything history too and I have the same thoughts as you, it’s quite mind blowing isn’t it to think about all the people that come before walking the same path you are! 😮 Yeah been on the Griffiths valuation, the maps show so many more buildings than stand now, it’s quite fascinating. As of today there is just us and the farmer, who helped us when the outbuilding roof fell in, who live here but back then there were 5 different families living here. I have traced back to the 1830’s with civil records the family that lived here until we bought it. It has always been the same family for all of those years which is absolutely mind blowing isn’t it? The censuses are great too, for seeing how many buildings were owned by the family and what was here at the time. We’ve met 3 of people who lived here as children and adults and it’s been lovely to be able to do that and to hear about the house and the land. We just want to learn all we can about how the land ran and well…just everything we can really! 😂

That's a lot of hard work, well done!! That will keep so much water out of the outbuildings and draining into the ditch as intended. The side of the raised garden will be the perfect place to practice building a short dry stone wall and will look so pretty too and a dry stone wall will allow the raised area to drain, you could also use cinder blocks as a retaining wall for the raised garden. What a massive difference already!
@thecornerhouseproject

Good evening Janie, we hope you are well. Thank you very much. Just seeing the water flowing from under the outbuilding the other day was great, but to realise just how much water came from the roof and on to the what was soil was eye opening. A gutter is now on the list. It is only on the list though so don't tell me off in a few days time when you don't see it hahaha. That is the same thinking we had Janie with the wall, just a low one, but hopefully we can make it look really nice. I think we have a few spare stones of various sizes lol. The drainage from the wall should be a real positive. That and sorting the boggy bit over the bedrock we hope we can sort the mud. I extended my bridge channel today and once emptied it just trickled from the top to the bottom so that is the start of hopefully a success. A huge difference, we are really looking forward to getting this bit "finished" though. Thank you as always. Have a lovely evening. See you Wednesday :-)

Thank you Dawn for trying to update on the D2. That square mouth shovel u are using is hard work and ur spade is two short. For doing this type of work use the long Irish spade to dig as you stand on top of the pile. Keep digging out of a face. Then use the long tail shovel to clean up like ur doing with your shovel. The long tail has a long shaft and has a pointed blade which is sharp. As I commented before these are cheap at local builders or Agri stores all over Ireland. Once u use these you will always reach for them. Also it’s great to start getting a relationship with ur local Agri and builders merchants. They have kit that works and cheaper too. The D2 is expensive but the stores mention will have algacides that are cheaper and do as good a job. If it help I can put a video up of the tools so u can we derstand them. But Dawn u have made serious progress and well worth doing. This is a long comment but look up doagh famine village. It’s in Donegal but well worth a day trip to see. They have old cottages etc up there to walk around and get a feel for what u have.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 6 ай бұрын
I must hang my head in shame, because we do have one of those long handle shovels with the pointed blade but completely forgot to use it but since so many people have said about the possibility of more stone being beneath the raised area I will use it to dig back a bit more. I got quite excited when I saw them in the local agri shop in Mohill. I will have a look for algacide in there too because I’d like to spray all of the outbuildings…because the couple of patches that we’ve sprayed with the D2 are looking great and it would be nice to get rid of the algae to brighten the stones up, but like you say, the D2 is expensive and to do all of the walls would cost a fortune lol. I will look up doagh famine village thank you, that would be an interesting day I think. Thank you for taking the time to explain everything that you did, it’s very much appreciated 😊

Dawn I bought the stuff to spray on the house to rid it of moss and it is working a treat! Thanks for sharing. I am sad to say we are under a freeze warning for the next two days which does not bode well for the blossoms, especially the DC cherry blossoms. I spent one summer building a graded retaining wall at our old house, and it was a chore. We had clay earth to move, although your soil looks about the same consistency. If it is, I hope you two are resting your backs. Fingers crossed that you are able to move the earth so that it becomes a less a boggy mess in the future.

Aww that’s great to hear! It’s good stuff isn’t it? I think we will try to get a larger quantity of something similar because the bottle we have is quite expensive to get in a large quantity but another commenter has said that there are places around here that do very similar products but a lot cheaper, so we’re looking forward to getting the whole of the outbuildings sprayed and brightening them up. Oh no with the freeze warning! Ooh I hope it doesn’t get as cold as they say it will and that your blossoms survive! Ours is pretty good soil for the most part but a bit clay like here and there. We’ve had a more sedentary couple of days with some tidying of some of the mess we’ve made whilst doing the land, so the backs have had a rest of sorts! 😂 ❤️❤️

Hi Kieron, thanks for watching and commenting. All of the dirt removed went on the raised area which we will keep raised. The dug out area will help with the drainage of this area and if needed we can stick some gravel channels in to direct it down and into the ditch. We want to really get this area as water logged free as possible. With most of if being on solid rock, we may have to remove some dirt and use gravel for that too. I can't see us being able to break the rock by hand :-( The whole house is dry and the kitchen is always warm due to the range always being lit. Hopefully we can get a log stove in the living room soon and get a load of heat on that side of the house too. All in all though, it is a warm house. Thanks again Kieron :-)

The weather really doesn't help does it, it makes it all heavier and slower, but it still gets done. The top area was somewhere close to sorted and then it is possible there is original larger stones under all of the earth we were going to leave as a raised area so watch this space. I am thoroughly enjoying your responses to the viewer comments. I feel I have learned much more about your progress, plans and learnings about the property than I can glean from your in-video conversation. I hope you enjoy responding because it must take a long time. I concur that the paving next to the wall is guttering. Your observation of a gradient makes sense in that context. Also additional paving makes sense as there seems to be plenty of big stone & not gravel in the area. A dry yard for ease of work and hoof health would be the farmer's preference. I also concur on moving the raised soil further back from the building, additional paving or not, to give yourself ease of building access. (Where will you be walking your proposed future livestock?) And, if I were to be clearing up this area and had disposable time and energy, I would build that proposed wall of stone with a wide paving walkway at it's base. It would be a seat, a ledge to lean on working the raised bed, a flat surface for garden implements,, harvest, whatever moves from the land to the house. And it would look great. Thanks for all your efforts (Not possible for you, but I was associated with a meadow drainage project long ago & far away, that did the ditch network with TNT. Worked a treat. No issues redistributing the burden.)

Thank you and we’re glad you enjoy reading the comments, there is always so much more in the comments than we could ever fit into a video and also people raise things in comments that we may not have either thought of or maybe not thought to explain our reasoning behind the things we are doing or have done. We do enjoy reading and replying to the comments, it does take a fair while, but we both feel that people take their time to comment and we should take time to respond to as many points as we can. We have learnt so much from you all, so much more than if we were to look for answers ourselves. We love figuring out how the land does and should work so it’s been important to us to take it slow so we don’t do the wrong thing that in the long run causes us more work long term. We apply the same principal with the house. The floors we had to replace there and then but the rest we will learn what’s best as we live here. 😊 I pictured in my mind the wall that you explained and it sounds like it would look lovely and also be really useful in the long run because, yes we do plan on having animals, might be a little while yet as we have lots still to do to get the land secure enough but we are really looking forward to this. That’s our trouble with the burden, nowhere realistically to put it lol. We needed 2 acres to be able to lose it! Haha.

I think you may well find the path is actually a wee courtyard (for horses) and what you’ve been shovelling is actually former animal dung. The raised beds would therefore be fantastic for growing fruit and veggies :-) I can’t believe how hard Dawn works, what an inspiration :-)

So many people have said about that being a possible courtyard….i think we might be doing a few exploratory digs to see what we have there. The stones that we uncovered do still go under the raised area so I think that’s probably a good place to start..maybe keep chipping away at the edge to see what it uncovers. The farmer neighbour stopped for a chat yesterday and said the very same with the soil being animal dung, it’s beautiful to dig when you’re not hitting stones and tree roots! Haha. Looking forward to seeing how well things grow in it! Thank you that’s very kind of you….i think Ben would call it being stubborn! 😉

Your progress is astonishing! I can see your reasons for doing this by hand. It's back-breaking work 😱, but allows you to carefully discover the lay of the land, where stones were placed to create paths, how the water runs, and so forth. It's an excavation that deserves thoughtfulness. It's still a muddy mess, but much tidier! I can envision the path out to the bridge.

Good evening Cynthia. What we dug out in Fridays video actually let the water which was under the outbuilding to flow out into the ditch. Now we have unearthed the "path" all of the water flows down to the ditch. We have a bit of work to do to stop pooling, but that is much better than it sitting in the soil not going anyway. Gutters will make a huge difference there too, I just need to get round to putting some up. I am guessing we will be lucky to see a pool once there is a gutter. Your discovered path was hidden under years of compost. The space between the "new" house and the old outbuildings for sure has paths hidden under layers of compost as well. That is why its totally muddy there. People didn't have raingutters 300yrs ago. They were clever and used sloped paths and spaces to get rid of too much water. Great achievement

Thank you Wanda and also for watching two videos one after another. No gutters is exactly why we think the paths are there and to walk around. You could be quite right with more paths and hopefully in time we may find another one or maybe more than one. It is possible that there was, maybe still is, a path in the section between the buildings, at present there is a lot of soil and massive stones. That is on the soon to be done list though. Your apple trees need a good trim. Take most of the old branches down to where the wood is still alive. It will take awhile for new branches to become viable. That bent tree might need a prop. If it breaks and splits it can let bad things enter a prop will strengthen it

So I’m in the middle of digging up my front yard for a paver walkway. I can totally sympathize with you guys digging I haven’t felt this sore in years. Those stones may be doing exactly what they were intended to do. It could be a drip gully for the runoff from the roof.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 6 ай бұрын
That sounds like hard work. We had soft soil and a few rocks here and there, but yes, it does make you ache a little lol. We agree completely with the stones. Not only a walkway behind the building but pushed the water down to the ditch. There is a gap between two of the stones (a hole) and it takes AGES to fill up when it rains, so we don't know where that is going. Could that be a drip gully? Good luck with the digging and hope your aches pass soon :-) Thank you as always :-)

For safe walking…..I think I’d consider covering the path in good natural gravel. Pebble gravel of some size so that ground water can seep down and away. I’d also line that path with bricks on ends to stabilize the mud bank. Maybe even cement the brick. Later you could get some larger flat stepping stones to lay over the gravel bed.

Use a shovel to dig as much as you can rather than the mattock - much easier on your shoulders and arms. I’ve dug trenches for years. Unless it’s very hard clay filled with rock - using your leg on a post hole shovel is by far easier! A good grub hoe can also help clearing loose soil - long handled of course like the shovel. Dig straight into a wheel barrow and remove away from your work site. Please use the right hand tools it will make your life exponentially easier and make the work go fast! You’re a damn hard working woman! ❤
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for saying so ❤️ The mattock is harder on the arms but it was a necessary evil for doing this because there are so many large and small stones, roots and bits of rubbish, plastic, glass and metal and anything else you could possibly imagine on this land and buried in the soil so it just made it easier to pull it down to pick out all the bits that stop the digging and hurt your body when the shovel/spade smashes into it. The soil itself with all of these things removed is lovely, but also very waterlogged and heavy. I don’t think you can see on this video but there are 4 huge garden bags of rubbish dotted around that we have just pulled out of this area that we are working on. It’s been a lot harder going than it looks on the videos. The plan was to use the soil to level the out the surrounding area so we were putting the soil onto the top for that reason rather than digging it away and we had planned on only digging that one width of pathway out…hmm…how things changed 😂 in the more up to date videos we have started to remove and take away the soil in the barrow. All the best laid plans and all that 😂 I must say also, I find it quite difficult handling/using the long handled tools maybe it’s because I’m 5ft tall? I just find them very awkward and heavy and our tools much easier to use.

When we cleared the first outbuilding we found a cart wheel which still had some rubber around it, sadly it had all perished and the metal wheel had rotted through. Thank you for the info and thank you for always watching and commenting. Have a nice evening :-)

Hang in there you are working so hard, and doing a fantastic job, and not in the best of conditions, I heard Ronnie Barker a few times in the background, must have been around to give you a bit of encouragement, and Ben had his jacket off twice, things must be warming up a bit, well done again. xxx❤

Thanks Pa! It was really hard going but got there in the end! Once I saw those stones on the floor, it kept me going! 😂 Ronnie Barker likes to announce himself once in a while. I know! it definitely means he is working too hard when the jacket and then the hoodie comes off too! I know one thing Pa….I am glad we are doing this in the cold weather because I would not be able to have done this in the summer! I would’ve exploded! 🤣 love you and mumma too. Xx❤️❤️

Rather than hire a digger I would be tempted to hire some kind of massive sieve to get the roots etc out then build raised beds ( that will help with drainage) to stop erosion by the rain. You have some amazing soil to fill them with.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 6 ай бұрын
It makes a nice change from being advised to get a digger lol. It would be lovely wouldn't it, but think of the double digging we would have to do, my arms are aching with just the though Colin haha. When we rake the soil we pull out any sticks and bits as we go, and it isn't a bad result to be honest. What was shown in this video is pre-cleaning rake. We will have bits of plastic coming to the surface for a long time from we think where one plastic bag was turned into a mouse nest and low and behold, 4000 bits of plastic. But the roots we try to remove as many as we can. We think we have a plan for the drainage and I lengthened the section I dig previous down to the ditch today, the top section kept tricking where the water was running from other places, so that is a good start. Thanks for joining us again Colin and commenting. Have a nice evening :-)

I was watching another Irish farm video, and they were talking about 30 seconds of a time-lapse is about an hour's worth of work. I thought oh my gosh and I'm always saying I want more time lapses lol plus none of us ever think about the editing. A digger would be great but I'm sure there are hundreds of dollars to rent? I wouldn't have money to do something like that I would have to be digging. But I know what you mean Dawn, I think I was an archaeologist in a previous life also amongst a bunch of other things I keep telling myself 😂 you know doctor psychologist etc lol another great video! Much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖 PS you should have seen my mouth when you guys cleared that whole area flat wow excellent job! I started singing the hallelujah chorus! Just think you guys have this on video to look back when this garden is established and say we did all that backbreaking work ourselves. You guys should be very very very very proud of yourselves!

Good afternoon Jackie, how is Oklahoma today? Yes, time lapse really eats up your video content very quickly. Most of the time lapse in this video was set to 7000% At that speed, a 6 minute 11 second clip lasts 5.09 seconds, I can't play it back in editing mode on my computer as it doesn't have enough processing power. I have to to wait until it spits out the finished video before I can see it in high speed. You are right, to get a digger for a few days does cost quite a bit and our very limited funds find it hard to get a mini digger in, so we have done it all by hand. It is good for the soul and heart rate. Dawn has always loved history and wanted to be an archaeologist and a investigator and a vet and so on and so on... seems you two are one of the same :-) Dawn said you have done a PS, So I will send this and reply again :-) Thank you Jackie, as always :-)

Thank you very much Jackie. It is funny as I said to Dawn not long ago... "Can you hear someone singing the chorus from hallelujah" hahaha We also have all of the unedited video stuff too. Like Rob and Clare of West Cork Wander, we have sooo many hours of stuff. I wouldn't know where to start watching it, but it is lovely knowing we have it. We are truly very very very very proud of ourselves lol. Thank you again Jackie, it is always pleasure and we so love your "PS" bits.

Wow, wow!!! You are doing such an amazing job. Maybe now would be the time for a digger rental for a few days to give your bodies and muscles a rest and finish the area right in front of the back door to the outbuildings??!!?? Not that I would want you to stop getting all of that exercise but just be a bit kinder to your bodies... Course, putting in a retaining wall and leaving the dirt certainly is another option. However, the archeologist in me would want to go through all of that soil and see what I might find. Best of luck with whatever path you decide to go down.

Good evening Cristy, nice to see you :-) Too late for a digger now, we have nearly finished the digging, I did say nearly though haha. Oh we are soooo fit, I wasn't out of breath once haha. A retaining wall might be possible as I think we have a couple of stones lying around we might be able to use. We are thinking a retaining wall as it will be in keeping with the buildings around it. Thank you as always Cristy, have a lovely evening :-)

I wouldn't be surprised if you discovered that the path is actually a stoned courtyard of sorts. Hard work for sure, but perhaps it is a quality-based lifestyle you are choosing to unearth literally the history of your land. Was what you call the outbuilding the original cottage?
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 6 ай бұрын
Awww I would LOVE that if you are right! Downside would mean we have to dig all of that out to find out! 😂 I do wonder if you’re right though as when I was digging along the edge it does feel like the stones go into that raised area. Maybe we can do a small exploratory dig and see if your theory is right? 😉 It is hard work most definitely but seeing history appear before your eyes is so exciting! I’m not sure with the outbuilding but I would think because of the lack of chimney, it may have always been just outbuildings…not sure though. Wouldn’t it be lovely if everything back in the day was documented? We do now know that the building that doesn’t belong to us used to house horses. I did put a picture up on instagram a while ago of all the buildings that were around this little plot. I’ll stick it on Facebook as well if you wanted to have a look. We finally got round to sorting a Facebook page!

The fire was probably originally in the centre of the house and the smoke escaped from a hole in the roof :-)

We understand that the house was built in two halves. The first being the kitchen side (the right hand side as you look at the front of the house) and then the living room (Parlour) was built at a later date. The house dates back an educated guess from dates of birth 120 years, and the eldest of the family now is 80, so we know the second part it 80+, we are thinking 100 years. The parlour was never used except on special occasions. Not even at Christmas. Thank you Joanna for watching and commenting :-)

Lots of people have said that too…the thought is in our head now so I think we will be digging a little more to have a peek at it! Fingers crossed there’s nothing there and we don’t have to dig anymore! 🤣 seriously though if we do find there might be something there then maybe a very careful digger driver might be called upon to scrape it back because that’s a lot of soil to hand dig out! Haha Thank you with the subscribers! We are soooo surprised and excited by how well it is going at the moment! Fingers crossed it continues!
