Join us as we continue our adventure of uncovering the suspected 200 year old farmyard at our Irish farmhouse. "Finding The Past - 200 Year Old Farmyard: Irish Farmhouse & Homestead" exposes a little more of the animal waste gully outside of the ancient farm building and we wonder how far it travels under all of the manure and old plant material. This fertile soil is a gardeners dream. Each day, more and more soil is carefully removed by hand to eventually uncover whatever has been hidden for a very long time. We have tried various ways to unearth the hidden farmyard as quickly as possible but each method takes as long at the other. There is no clear winner for speed when it comes to uncovering history carefully. With large stones buried, thick tree roots and bits of rubbish, we are having to use various digging tools to get the job done. Eventually we will win and have the area uncovered to hopefully provide a hard standing at the very least.
With now five sections for the no dig raised beds, the corrugated steel is now close by ready to make the actual containers for the raised beds. With old logs and sticks at the bottom of the soil, we are taking full advantage of the Hugelkultur (Hügelkultur) system.
All three of the old apple trees now have leaves as well as the plum trees. The Blackthorn (sloe bush) is smothered in blossom and the Whitethorn (Hawthorn) is covered in leaves. Clearing the land over 30 days was worth every minute now all of the brambles have gone and the ivy cut back meaning the "real" plants and trees can thrive in the sun and breeze.
Being complete beginners at farmhouse renovation and really needing a "homesteading for beginners" guide, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse.
