@Jinsell376 жыл бұрын
Paul Reiser is better known for being a comedian. He starred with Helen Hunt in "Mad About You" throughout the 90s. With that said, he's proven he can do other genres. As someone already mentioned, he's in the second season of "Stranger Things." His role as Carter J. Burke is one of his best. He comes off as extremely likable at the beginning since he appears to be the only one who believes or cares about Ripley. As the film progresses, though, his image begins to deteriorate and by the end you realize how much of a despicable and disgusting sociopath he truly is.
@victorh55136 жыл бұрын
Jinsell37 I agree. I wish the movie would’ve shown more of how Burke was the real villain.
@imperialtutor86874 жыл бұрын
What I always found amazing about Burke is how he basically never really showed fear until he got ganked by the xeno. Hudson was straight up panicking but the situation was so dire everyone was shitting their pants...but Burke busts out that sing some songs , make a fire line. I think he was just so caught up in his own damn hubris to understand the gravitas of the situation. Not to mention his behavior clearly showed him to be a remorseless psychopath. What an excellent villain especially in lieu of Paul Reiser being a primary comedic actor at least at the time he was. He got great range and is great.
@JonathanHayes-uz3ee2 жыл бұрын
you said it in one word. psychopath. a repressed emotional response to fear. they do feel fear, don't misunderstand, but they can't think their way into fear. Think of a meteor coming to Earth. It's here to wipe out everyone. The NEWS of this event wouldn't make them fear anything..but looking up and seeing the meteor and feeling the fear is much more likely.
@mdkramster Жыл бұрын
The character has no empathy; is a sociopath. Everything, everyone, is a means to an end. He doesn't connect with Ripley, Newt or the marines or the colonists. Means to an end. And yes, played beautifully by the actor.
@Nick64266 Жыл бұрын
Well he wasn’t in combat with the marines. He watched everything from the sidelines. Still he did contribute pretty well. Pushing Gorman off of Ripley, putting out the fire, and attempting to offer medical aid to Hudson. Not that it redeems him or anything but still he’s not a complete moron.

Humans, on the other hand, are complicated species our curiousity is our greatest weapon and also our greatest weakness. Heck, they lost more than 1/2, it was more like 3/4 of the Marines died in that first encounter (if you count the dropship crew). If Burke would have hired private contractors I feel like there would be that "Chronicles of Riddick Mercenary", dynamic character development where some of them will side with Ripley and agree that the Xenomorphs need to be destroyed while there would also be the "As long as I get paid I'll do anything" kind of characters that would side with Burke. From there we would see a very similar turn out that Aliens brought us but we would have some extended scenes where the Merc's and Burke are trying to capture specimens and sabotage as much as possible to get the Company what it wants. Burke and the Merc's would start to succumb to the desperation of survival from not only the Xeno's but the other group of Mercs who would be attempting to flee just like them. They would also resort to drastic measures to get the Aliens off the planet so Burke might have even attempted to impregnate some of his fellow Mercs similarly to how he did with Ripley and Newt. To be honest it would have made for a really interesting movie in contrast to Aliens. In fact I would go as far as to say it would be awesome to see an Aliens universe movie where WeyU actually does something similar to this!

My only real problem with Ripley's reaction was that telling him to his face that she was going to turn him in for his crimes nearly got her and Newt face-hugged. Well he kind of sized Ripley up during their initial meetings on Gateway station and to be honest Ripley was an emotional wreck from her PTSD from the Nostromo incident. Add to that the news that her daughter had lived a full life and passed away before Ripley got home. He also saw Ripley getting emotional during the Deposition hearing and it was easy for him to buy into the corporate findings that Ripley as an emotional female had let some incident panic her into self-destructing the ship. When the colony went dark after Burke had the coordinates that Ripley suppled investigated, Burke figured that the aliens were real but it was the fact that neither the Nostromo crew or the Hadley's Hope colonists had any military training or equipment that led to them being overrun and surely a Marine Platoon under his guidance, would be more than enough to handle some bugs.

Actually, Burke's inclusion of the government was a smart one. Think about it: no matter if it had been the Marines or a private merc organization, he would still have to get past the government checkpoints in order to get a cocooned Ripley and Newt through. The impression given is that Weyland-Yutani is still subservient (to a degree at least) to a rather bloated earth bureaucracy (which in some ways, to be honest, sounds as bad as Weyland-Yutani itself in morals). Personally, I think W-Y was operating with the government's unofficial blessing. If we're talking about bioweapons research, it obviously means that government involvement for military implementation would have to come into play eventually. There would be no point to the research if it didn't, and it sounds as if the hope is in establishing profit through military usage of the xenomorphs. I suspect that bureaucrats knew far more about W-Y's operations than is believed.

Hard to believe anyone could seriously think xenomorphs would make for a good bio weapon after what burke saw firsthand. You drop those eggs on anyone, whether it's Chinese or Russian, and humanity's home planet is cursed for 1,000 years. It would be a "game over" scenario.
@Abrxas015 жыл бұрын
The believed they could modify them, control them. They were extremely arrogant. Drop a few dozen eggs onto an enemy planet/city or heck, even a competing company. The eggs would be modified to not be a queen or allow the drones to reproduce in any way. Let the drones wipe out however many and either swoop in as the hero to resolve the situation for them, then they owe you or declare the entire area quarantined due to alien infestation. Force either the government or whoever to 'sterilize' the area to make sure it never spread any further. I can think of a dozen variations that they could use them for. If they thought they could control them with an implant or some such, they could be security on/in special facilities.
@Abrxas015 жыл бұрын
@Lady Wanderer If they know what they are dealing with you mean. Also, since we already know that there are people that trying to tinker with the damn thing, it would only be a matter of time before they made it MORE lethal and virulent. And since these are ambush predators and tend to strike at prey that is seperated from others, at least near the beginning, it would be difficult for larger populations to notice multiple disappearances. By the time they realized something was wrong, they could be hundreds strong, especially since they only have roughly a 24hr incubation period from time of infection to 'birth', then perhaps and additional 12 hrs for maturation. There would be a very large force of xeno's inside the city, more than likely striking from the sewers. Office buildings and other large structures would also make good hives.
@Abrxas015 жыл бұрын
@Lady Wanderer You mean like the terrorists we deal with in Afgan and Iraq?
@Abrxas015 жыл бұрын
@Lady Wanderer You're kinda missing my point. The conflict we currently face is happening in relatively rural areas. Yes, there's more fighting in the cities in Iraq but most of it still happens outside the main cities. Also, these things are more like a macroscopic virus than any kind of opponent armed with firearms and explosives. You have to know who and what you're enemy and how they fight to effectively combat them. You wouldn't necessarily have that advantage when the xeno's were introduced the first time. Failed conventional assaults would do nothing more than grow the xeno's numbers. Airstrikes are possible if the hives were above ground but considering they liked to be in areas that are hot, humid, and dark, I find that unlikely. Sub basements of buildings and sewers more likely. You would have to localize the hives before destroying which you would have to do by conventional means. Nukes could potentially assist but 1) we don't know if the radiation would affect them the same way it affects humans or other lifeforms and 2) they are again in underground environments which makes them much more difficult to hit and 3) leaders are typically hesitant to start dropping nukes on habitated areas. Tends to upset the population. So, could they be wiped out? Certainly. If you did everything right, reacted in time to contain them and took steps to make sure none got out of that containment. I don't necessarily believe they would take over Earth, but they could put a serious hurt on it, especially in heavily populated areas and I think you would forever more deal with minor outbreaks forever after. All it takes is one egg and a little bit of time.
@petervlcko48585 жыл бұрын
i think that it will be not used as it is at all. it is new technology people do not posses. alien, keep in the mind, is still a robot which grows like living forms. if they use it, they derive from it far more devastating weapons we can imagine now. alien is just bank/pool of horrors like pandora box. they can make indestructible viruses, bio-suites, improve genome of us or other animals to create desired effect, or create completely new species based on gained material, and so on.

I agree - even back then in 1986 it was clear that even contemporary weapons were getting to be far more precise and lethal. How much better could weaponized Xenomorphs be than orbital bombardment, dropships festooned with missiles, and tough Marines with 10mm caseless rounds? Sure... drop a batch of these on an "enemy" planet or a rebellious colony or mining camp, and they'll be brought to heel by having everyone cocooned up and killed. Now you have to clear all of them out so that you can take over? Even from the first Alien, I've been under the impression that whoever inhabited that weird semi-circular crashed ship was more advanced than us, and yet they couldn't contain or eliminate the threat? The only thing that makes sense to me is that perhaps certain individual aspects of their biology would be studied and duplicated. The incredibly rapid tissue growth to perhaps accelerate healing in wounded troops. Acid resistant flesh that could be mimicked to improve industrial coatings or make military vehicles resistant to chemical attach or corrosive planetary environments.

@Khan-dell-Orda-d-Argento4 ай бұрын
Even so there would be several things that don't add up: 1. building such a structure would have cost a lot, so any unexpected action on the part of the colonists had to be avoided (detonating everything); 2. building a structure near the wreck, knowing that it exists, could have led to its discovery by the colonists and therefore to the revelation of that secret, and it would be better to avoid unwanted publicity; 3.considering the Ash model, the company could easily send a team of androids to investigate. Nobody would have known, and they shouldn't have even involved the military (ok, they are closely associated with the wy, but we're still talking about an entire squad lost, in addition to the colonists, of course).

My theory is that Burke didn't request full funding and resources from higher up, because he was afraid some senior level exec would take over the project and get most of the credit & bonuses. So Burke tried to do this by himself, with the resources available to him, in order to protect his own standing.

First of all, think you for this video! The more I watch your videos with constant references to the books, the more I keep thinking now that I need to get around to actually reading the novelizations of Alien and Aliens. As for what Burke could've done... he was pretty much pinned in a corner. Ripley had her eye on him, and likely anything more complicated than what he tried to do would've failed, as he's simply no match for her. Sedating her and Newt, assuming there was anything in the colony that would've provided such an option, would've risked waking Ripley up, at which point he'd be screwed. Likewise, there's no way he could've smuggled the facehuggers on board. No one else except maybe Bishop would've let him (everyone else wanted the aliens destroyed, even Gorman), and they're too big and dangerous for him to hide. So I say he really did the best he could've done if he wanted to smuggle an alien that bad. I dunno how he expected it to work with only a four hour window to work with, but it was the only option available to him that had a better than zero chance of success, even if it was only like 5%. Ripley OTOH should've either never confronted Burke about this, or just killed him. She could've gone to the marines with her new info instead and they'd likely kill or contain him ASAP. Not that it would've changed much in the long term. I'm fascinated by the characterization of Burke here though... he really don't seem "evil" here so much as just an emotionless and greedy bureaucrat. All his decisions are based on money, not malice... he doesn't WANT to kill Ripley, Newt, or the colonists, but he's also not particularly upset if they happen to perish in utter agony if it gets the company the alien and him his ungodly amounts of money. Which, IMHO, is actually vastly more horrifying than him being a typical slimy evil businessman. It really shows that the worst of humanity might not be some over the top sadistic psycho who revels in death and suffering, but just some bland corporate paper pusher trying to make the profit numbers go up, who is in fact just plain indifferent to it all. Psycho villains aren't super common, and aliens may or may not exist, but emotionless corporate morons are fucking EVERYWHERE IN REAL LIFE. THAT is terrifying.

I know i'm late on this one, but i'm gonna go nerd mode on this for a second bare with me. The hypothetical scenario of placing Ripley and Newt into a hyper sleep, and the remaining marines. Setting his own unit to activate several days earlier, and jettisoning the soldiers into space bar Ripley and Newt. Let's say Burke did carry out this plan, preparing a story when arriving back at a Weyland installation. As inscrupulous as Weyland Yutani were, they're basically the Umbrella Corporation in this universe, but even they were not exempt from the law. So, even if Burke succeeded in his plan, wouldn't there be other security measures in place that would check these things? Staff chiefs, ship masters, site supervisors and engineering heads and ship technicians as the main examples. It was a military operation, so on return of said operation, there would be a debriefing regardless of the marines involved being present or not. The Sulaco would be checked and serviced, meticulously. The flight recorder, the hyper sleep systems, the ships flight path, and its operational systems, etc. So any systems tampering or unusual activity logs or anomalies would be readily identified. None of which Burke would be smart enough to account for. So even if Burke did attempt such a plan, he'd be in jail before the day was through.

Correct. Burke's plan was poorly thought out. It lacked execution and fall-backs. The solution was in the Jordan's vehicle. Get Bishop to secure the facehuggers in stasis, suitable for transport. Move them onto the Jordan's vehicle and buggy over several hundred miles away and wait. Once the comms was restored to the Sulaco, contact the company and request a pickup - as the reactor went critical, the company would arrive and reach the buggy location. They could've invested in researching the xenos there, or at a off-world lab for better analysis. Burk could've used the APC, as an alternative. It would've been hardened for a nuclear blast and if the axle was broken; it'd have contained the facehuggers.. multiple fall back options. Burke's options were open. He chose an option where he had to play off a vote, politics and the military. If he gathered all the medical data, testing etc and waited on the planet for a recovery team.. He'd have his success.
