In this episode at the Sawdust Factory we work on some burls, or what we thought were burls.

I like that bowl, Josh. I like gnarly wood -- nice, clean bowls are just bland. (picture Madeline Kahn in Blazing Saddles sniffing the bouquet of roses "how... ordinawy (sic)") Wrt the struggle roughing, let me offer this for your consideration: an 18" length of 5/8" 4140 steel hexagonal bar, hole drilled in one end to accept a 1/4" HSS metal lathe tool blank and drilled & tapped for a couple of set screws. Grind a sorta fingernail on the HSS blank and you can bludgeon *any* blank onto round without trouble :-) 4140 is a lot tougher than mild steel, the hex shape permits registration of a flat on the toolrest, and you can rotate to a flat either direction. Great idea Clyde! I might have to make one of those. I have some D2 still laying around the shop somewhere, I’ll have to dig it out. I might even have a hex profile bar too. But it’s probably not 4140. I like character in my pieces as well. But this one was kind of disappointing since I walked in thinking I was going to get a great Burl piece out of it. Oh well lesson learned... don’t have high expectations till you know what’s behind the bark. That might have to be the title of my next video.

Looks good, I have 3 burrows I've yet to turn, im hoping they are anyway. 2 were given to me and one I cut off a tree that had been knocked down beside a river in New Mexico a a couple years back. Working on getting my shop back on order since I got some new tools, or as my wife calls them "toys" over the Christmas holidays. I hit subscribe to see more of your work and would appreciate you checking out some or all my videos also.

I just found a bunch of desert ironwood that has a bunch of burl on it. The tree was dead and half of it gone from being chopped up. I cut it up and took all the burl home...Have no idea what Im going to do with it since I suck at wood turning. But man, what I did turn from the non burl ironwood looks great. This desert ironwood is some HARD stuff and has a ton of mottling. I had to sharpen my chainsaw twice just cutting a little of it up

Awesome!!! I wish I could get my hands on some of that, even iron wood without Burl would be great. It doesn’t grow in my region. Where abouts are you located?

Firstly, your video was Very interesting & informative. You do excellent work. I enjoyed it! However, as you are making a video, some small attentioon shd be paid to the audio. Perhaps voice over or printed comments would work. Also,& I guess you already noticed, attaching a camera to the lathe vibrates the picture to a blur. Loved the tip on keeping the wood moist. Thanks & keep on turning!

Thanks johnnie. I will have to investigate the audio issue. I had to use a new video editing software for this video and I wonder if I messed up the audio portion. Also I’ll be sure to note the camera movement as well in the future. Thanks for watching and sorry for the bad video quality this time. Stay tuned for more.

I'm in eastern NC. Haven't turned any yet. Have the sections cut and put up to dry. The vines have died off leaving the twisted effect. Not sure if will only be the sap wood affected or if the Heartwood will also be altered. Thanks for the reply.

How much is Burl worth? I found one on a live tree and it's got to be every bit of a 1000lb and if I'm not mistaken in on a black walnut but if have to go look again because it's been 2 years since I've been back there

Kind of depends on a lot of factors. Also is often difficult to find a buyer. Usually they have to be processed and dried before sold.

Josh, I'm able to lay my hands on a mess of vine twisted maple, cherry, and beech. Have you ever tried turning anything like this? Thanks.
@JoshBayerWoodturning
@JoshBayerWoodturning 6 жыл бұрын
No I haven’t ever turned anything with vines on it. Does it affect the pattern / appearance of the grain? Where about a are you located?

I've never worked with hard maple is it better go with carbide cutter
@JoshBayerWoodturning

It might be. Honestly I don’t use a lot of carbide other than on my hollowing tool.

Is this work as dangerous as it looks? I looked and noticed that thankfully you wear a face guard and stand to the side as much as seems possible. If one spun off and hit you a face shield might not be enough. Hopefully it's not as dangerous as it looks.
@JoshBayerWoodturning
@JoshBayerWoodturning 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s dangerous.. I got hit in the head with a pretty good size piece of wood last year and it pushed on the face shield so hard against my skin I ended up with 5 stitches above my left eye brow. The key is properly fixing things to the lathe and checking wood stability as you go through out the project.
