In this video from Bayer's Sawdust Factory, I glue up a turn a large segmented vase. The finished vase measures approximately 30" tall and 19" in diameter at the widest section.
Thanks for watching. Subscribe to my channel for more wood turning videos in the future.

Making a segmented form this big is insane. Welcome to the club :-) It turned out beautifully. A couple of things: search for the MiterSet Segment miter calibration jig. Using one has revolutionized my segmented turning. There are some good reviews here on KZbin. Second, I always make two sections, as you did, going from base/top to the major diameter, but I glue all the rings for each half using a screw press made with all thread. (I copied one that Frank Howarth made on his channel.) If the rings get bigger than my 12" disk sander (because I use PSA sanding disks and they get stupidly expensive in sizes larger than 12"), I'll glue up rings individually and use a 6" wide sanding paddle with two 3" strips of PSA sanding roll stuck on it. Make the paddle long enough to span your biggest ring, and all is copacetic. I also find that turning a disk (or disks) on a face plate and using it as an internal jam chuck from the tailstock end will stabilize long sections better than a steady rest, especially for sanding those individually glued rings. It looks like you already have a tailstock chuck adapter, so you'd be set there. Now, you know everything I do :-) Clyde

Thanks the pointers Clyde. Do you have any examples of a person using the sanding paddle. I'm not sure I followed that part all the way. Interested in learning more about that.
@clydeulmer4484
@clydeulmer4484 7 жыл бұрын
I may have mislead you by using the term "paddle" -- it's just a flat, straight board, longer than the width of your piece, with sandpaper stuck to it. For a turning as large as yours, it needs to be wide too. With the turning spinning, press the board against it, spanning both sides as close to the max diameter as possible, and apply even pressure. Since you have to have sandpaper only out at the ends, it's an effective cheap-out :-) Really, it's just the reverse of applying a stationary object to a spinning sanding disk. Clyde

Awesome. Sounds like your wife really knows how to shop. Ladies take note. With a 22” throw you’ll really be able to make some big stuff. I have to go on the out board to do anything bigger than 20”. Have fun and be safe.

The disk sanding is more work but better for the larger rings. I still wish I owed a drum sander. Maybe when I get a bigger shop I'll own one.

Thanks Andy. I like using my chop saw. Makes perfect angle cuts every time. I've made a couple sleds in the past and found they take awhile to setup and tend to wear out or get sloppy over time. Chop saws have such good toleranceing these days.

Hi Josh. I just subscribed this morning and havn't watched any other videos yet but could you tell me where i can get the giant disc sander that you are using or if there is a video how to build it. This is good stuff this segmented turning. I have learned a lot and realized how critical accuracy is. You do really good work and I appreciate how you always try to do things right. Thanks so much for taking your time to make and post videos. Sharing the knowledge is appreciated. Peace.
@JoshBayerWoodturning
@JoshBayerWoodturning 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Robert. Glad you enjoyed the video. If you watch the big vase video you’ll see me make the big sanding disk. I used some old particle board shelves glued together is double layers. Then I use some spray adhesive to attached some 80 grit sand paper. Attach the face plate and walla! You have yourself one giant disk sander. Or small one if you please. They come in really handy . And when they wear out I reuse them some something else, attach more sand paper, or just set them on the burn pile. Keep on turning!

How many degrees do you cut your blocks. And do you stay with same degrees to make a bigger ring or just add more blocks to make ring bigger
@JoshBayerWoodturning
@JoshBayerWoodturning 6 жыл бұрын
Todd each piece makes up 20 degrees since there are 18 pieces per ring. 18*20=360 degrees of the circle. To get the 20 degrees cut each side of the segment to 10 degrees. I just used my mother saw for this project with the angle fixed at 10 degree. Each piece in a single ring has to be exactly the same length. Or there will be big gaps at the glue points. To make bigger or smaller diameter rings you change the length of the segment. Check out Jerry Bennett’s videos on segmentology to see some amazing segment techniques and project rings. He does a great job.

How did you attach the large sanding disk to the lathe? Faceplate?
@JoshBayerWoodturning
@JoshBayerWoodturning 6 жыл бұрын
Actually I screwed a small disk of wood that acts as a tenon that I put in a chuck. My other sanding disk is just put on a face plate. Either way works good. Attaching directly to a face plate is probably the best way to go.
