I'm 44 and I have been running around in the woods since I was old enough to walk. Two days ago my friend and I were kayaking down a river in NW Arkansas and he spotted some unusual trees growing along the river bank. We climbed up the bank and lo and behold, there was a paw paw patch. We picked over 50 of them. Until that day I had only seen two paw paw trees in my life, the one in my Grandma's backyard and one in a yard in the city I live in.

I love this! The first time that I remember hearing this song was when Mr. Greenjeans sang it on Captain Kangaroo.

Imagine if your grandfather was also with you, you would've found paw paws, with your paw, and your paw paw. 😂

Anyone familiar with pawpaws knows that they are too soft to put in a pants pocket without getting totally smooshed. The "pockets" in the song in question is referring to the large front pockets (almost like gather bags) that were sewn into the front of women's aprons at the time that this song was originally written.

We learned this song when I was in second grade in 1967. I often think about this song when I'm out in the yard cleaning up my dog's masterpieces. But I'm pickin' up poo-poos instead of pickin' up paw-paws.

My Grandma, who passed away a few months ago on my birthday, used to sing this all the time. She got me to start singing it as a very young child. She would always say, "Where, oh where, is sweet little Jimmy?" Funny thing is, my Grandpa's name was Jimmy. I called them MawMaw and PawPaw. I had no clue that a PawPaw was an actual plant, so I took the song literally. "Pickin' up PawPaw's, puttin' em in your pocket." I always envisioned a patch of actual PawPaw's. I often wondered how I would fit PawPaw Jimmy in my pocket? 😂😂 Anyway, thanks for posting this! It brought back some fun childhood memories! RIP MawMaw JoAnn and PawPaw Jimmy, I miss you both!! -Tessa in Arkansas
