The way people have been taught to writes resume and land work is broken. Kerri Twigg illustrates a new way to teach people to look for work, switching up how they build resumes and managing their careers. Kerri Twigg is an international career coach who helps people use their
stories to grow their careers. She was named the #1 Career Coach to
follow by JobScan and was named a LinkedIn Top Voices in 2018 in the
Workplace and Management category. She is a contributing author to the
Amazon best-selling career book, YouMap.
Kerri has been helping people to figure out what makes them awesome and
how to embrace that awesomeness for over 20 years. First as a creative
drama teacher and now as a career coach. She doesn’t tell everyone this,
but she’s allergic to formulas that make you look like everyone else.
You’re more interesting than that.
Kerri is a Certified Resume Strategist. She holds a B.A in Theatre and
Film (U of Winnipeg), M.Ed in Humane Education (Cambridge College) and
an HR Certificate from Red River College. She has taught and spoken at
theatres, Universities, corporate boardrooms and even a boathouse. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I am loving these Ted Talks on careers. I am changing my career to something I love and can intellectually stimulate me and these all have been very helpful. I have had many breakthroughs in the last few days and I feel more inspired, motivated, and sure of what I want to do with my life. This particular talk has made me recognize some extremely useful skills that I possess and how to look at my strengths in a different light. Rather than thinking about what jobs I have done, I can think of the general and unique skills I have gained. Thank you!

My resume was under the anialate category. It was exactly as you initially described. It got no attention because it was not selling what I was best at. Depends on the job. For a role at a larger organization, you'll likely always need a resume. But, a lot of start-ups don't need them. I have clients who are interviewing at google and Adobe who were tapped for roles based on their reputations and LinkedIn activity. They never needed a resume.

This great advice for interviewing. I don't disagree with her but I would offer that your resume is less important than networking and your cover letter. In resumes, I hide keywords from the ads that I apply to related to my profession. I do that in case the summary of my work doesn't suffice. Many of the automated resume sorters have keyword searches and keyword counters. I worked for a hospital and we were short staffed. We got over 1000 resumes submitted over the course of a week. Not a single candidate made it to my manager to even review. They couldn't make it past the filter. My boss fought with HR about this. The keywords are in the ad.

Many employers do like creative resumes, it's just that they don't replace the mandatory 2 to 3 years of experience, so.. What do you do about that?
@KerriTwigg1

If they require the experience, go and get the experience. Or create it for yourself. The only other way is to make the case for how your previous experience gives you the skills. Some places take chances, some don't.

I think that KZbin is spying on me. It is recommending me videos I need when I need them too often. Does that mean the algorithm likes me or does it want me to like it? I have 3 days to think about what will I say in the interview. Maybe about how gritty I am or about my ability to cope with... or about how well I can explain things to others. It is a time to write a speech about myself that I would tell on the interview. If I don't get the job, I will change my resume.

I'm surprised how many people are into such vague and just kind of bad advice. While I appreciate the general message, a lot of this seems out of context unless you are a hiring professional and there's quite a few points, if taken literally, that could really put a job seeker at a disadvantage.

WHAT points were those ? That put a job seeker at risk ? I do not know your ages but I am 52 yo, and can only think of one thing that 2 jobs I did to make money that I was myself and thoroughly looked forward to each job. I didn't have a resume for either one, my reputation proceeded me on one and the other was about the hustle and going after the work the worse that could happen was a No.
