Beautiful explanation on burnup and burn down charts. My key take aways: 1) pending info is shown using burn down charts. 2) accumulated info is shown using burn up charts. 3) the slope of the graph does not act as a reference for performance judgement. 4) the chart represents a team strategy

Good Information . Always focus on the strategy used by the team during the sprint. Burn down shows always the pending ones. Burn Up shows what is getting accumulated

Key Takeaway: Burndown chart - The Burndown chart is a graphical way of representing how much is the work pending at any point in time. Burnup chart - The Burnup chart is a graphical way of representing how is the value added progressing with time. Mostly if the data is added the Burnup chart is used and when there is a need to track data the burndown chart is used.

Great explanation. The main thing I can understand now is that the dotted line represent only a slope. For sure I'll watch the burndown charts with new eyes. In any case it's interesting to see a very different point of view respect other coach I've met.

3 key takeaways: 1. Burnup chart gives a fair idea of the team in the sprint at a given point of time 2. Burndown chart tells the work left in the sprint and helps in devising a better and more effective strategy 3. The shape of the chart reflects the updates shared by the team

Burn Downchart- Work pending vs time left (how much work is pending at any point of time), this do not tell what is pending. It is I/A tools and technique. It tells how much is pending and to I/A task board is used [to Do or in progress or done board] Burn-up chart - Value Added (Incremental) vs Time- How much is added or accumulated till a point When we have target go with burn down chart When we do not have target go with burn down chart

My takeaways from the video - Common points about burnup/burndown charts - 1. They answer the question "how much" is pending (for burndown)/ achieved (for burnup). They don't indicate about the nature of the work pending/that can be achieved. 2. They are basically a tool/technique that would be more suitable to be used during the course of a sprint, rather than at the end of the sprint. This is because this graph can give an indication about team's performance and thus by inspecting this graph, team can choose adapt/update the sprint plan or update the sprint backlog items that can be achieved during the remainder of the sprint. 1. For burndown chart, the dotted line represents an average story point/effort that would be expected. Since this average can be a decimal figure, there is no guarantee that team will exactly follow this line. Any team that does show this kind of graph is misleading. 2. It is very much okay for teams to show stagnation in burn down chart during certain stage of the sprint/release (assuming sprint/release burndown chart, with the story points or pending product backlog items on Y axis of the graph). This is because teams may not be able to complete a user story/task right at day 1. They may take a couple of days and then update the burndown chart accordingly. 3. Management that question team's performance for not following the average, may need some tutoring about this graphs to have a better understanding about the same.

Key takeaways: The BurnDown chart isn't a performance measurement chart but a pending task chart. Therefore tool shouldn't be used for performance measurement. The chart is for inspecting and adapting tool plus technique, it has no purpose after sprints/projects. The BurnUp chart gives information about the work down, such as user stories released or done.

KEY TAKE AWAY: 1. B/Up charts (used to check how much is accumulated) and B/Dn chart ( how much is pending) are techniques and tools used to I/A. 2. The linear slope does not indicate an ideal situation.

1.Burnup chart also shows the scope change, does it make them more effective in analyzing team's past and behaviors? 2.Can the scope change line be used in burndown chart as well?
@NaveenNanjundappa2 жыл бұрын
1. burndown chart is graphical representation of anything you want to represent.. be it tasks, tasks hours, scope or anything for that matter.. question is why you need that information and what will you do with it. 2. What does scope change mean? Team adding, modify or delete the task during work is not scope change. Scope change is only when the "scope of the work related to product backlog item changes that impact the sprint goal or items in the sprint. Sprint backlog is plan to reach sprint goal. It can be changed by the developers.

@@NaveenNanjundappa Thanks so much for the reply! I am hearing in all the videos that burnup chart is better than burndown when the team is trying to gauge it's daily progress in a visual manner and also management get's to see scope change ,if any, and relate it to the daily increment ..i am not able to grasp the reason behind!

Key Takeaway: Burn down chart gives a clarity on teams progress and Burn up chart gives clarity on how much progress towards the value the team has made for given time or release.
