SEE DUST SEGMENT AT 15:00 MIN MARK!!! TEMPLE BURN AT 21:22!!!
An in-depth Documentary on the principles of Burning Man. What it is to the people who attend, what they get from their experience, and what they take with them from their time on the Playa.
Frustrated with the misconceptions of Burning Man, I set out to create a Documentary on Burning Man and how it effects the people who attend.
Burning Man Org is focusing on Burning Man 2022. After the success of Burning Man 2021 / Plan B / Rogue Burn / Renegade Burn, there will be some notable changes. The 2021 burn was a mark in history. Estimated 30,000 Burners showed up and made the event happen without the Burning Man Org. The event was free, and many old school Burners claimed this is what BM felt like many years ago before it became too organized.
Burning Man 2022 had record heat and dust storms. Many Burners left the even early.
Mud at the 2023 Burning Man has trapped 70,000 people at the festival.

Watching this Film and reading adverse comments like i see in the videos about Burning Man i actually feel great sorrow for you. For you'll never get it...you'll never understand what life is about. You think your vain selfish existence is the way to live when in all actuality your life hasn't even left the starting point. Life is experiencing as much diversity and sharing love and simple pleasures in the short time we have been given. It doesn't mean a life of debauchery or constant partying but a healthy balance to enable you to know the differences. I was fortunate to learn this simple lesson when i was 12 years old standing with my grown cousins at Woodstock listening to Richie Haven singing "freedom" knowing that when it was all over my cousins would be leaving for Vietnam and i might never see them again. And i didn't. Live your life to the fullest and stop judging others and join them in life. Peace.

While I really dig all the art installations, I suppose I already feel how the people in this video do. The thing that turns me off from wanting to go is that I see an overt materialist reductionist mentality that exists despite claims of a kind of metaphysical peace. Turned down going for years now. For me living life to the fullest is kayaking on a cold water spring and seeing gators, bears, and the rare Florida panther. (for example). Sometimes its making great art. Thats pretty badass you were at Woodstock when you were 12. I can see how that event would make you dig something like this. And I suppose there is a sense of unity with all who go to Burning Man. But honestly, watching these videos, I get a sense of egos yearning for people to notice them. Which, yeah, everyone wants to be noticed and loved. I get that. But for me, I see a lot of options to express and fill this need that doesn't include making this scene. And while I'm happy to see videos of this event, (now at a click on this groovy thing called the web), I'm also happy I trusted my intuition and stayed away. But a an observer and lover of art and people, I think these make interesting videos.

You miss the point. It's not about being noticed but about having the freedom to express ones self without society telling us how to do so. Try to collaborate with a black bear on an art project, or participate with a grizzly in a gifting economy, If you've turned down what some people call a bucket list item you're missing out, that's on you. Don't try to put it off on your judgements of the people you see at burning man. You have no clue what the majority of people at burning man are like, nor do I and I've been there. Experience informs better than assumption. You'll never peg what the experience is like for one person let alone 80,000 of them. I welcome you to outgrow your self-limiting preconceived ideas and attend. Test yourself. It's a different experience than what you listed, it's not supposed to be kayaking, or animal watching, it is what it is to each individual, you get the burn you need. Go and see what I mean. You won't regret it.

Tom I am sorry to hear about your cousins. I am glad you got a chance to spend that time with them before they left for Vietnam. The unfortunate message that gets out about Burning Man is that its all parties, sex, and drugs. I made this Documentary because I was frustrated with the real meaning of the event and what it does in a positive way was not leaving the event. My Documentary focuses on what it means and what is does to help people. Give then a chance to not be judged and experience a simulated society of freedom. There are so many amazing seminars at Burning Man everyday on self development, personal growth, spiritual journeys, relationship advice, Imagination for the future, creative workshops and more. It gives people a chance to understand life. Thank you for your opinion. I think we are all on the same sheet of music here. I appreciate your thoughts and thank you for watching my film. Todd

Totally agree. It's fun to be young and carefree in a virtual environment that doesn't reflect real reality. It's said that the truth is stranger than fiction and I would further adapt this phrase to say that reality is far more amazing, interesting and beautiful than any fake one. Ok, life is a process and Burning Man perhaps is just one stop from realizing that you "been there, done that", after having something real and just enjoy it for entertainment value and nothing more.

It mad me sad when editing this Documentary on Burning man knowing James Duffey, the old man in this film....did not have many more years left to attend the event. He was a very kind part of the Documentary. I'm afraid to reach out to him today in fear that he is no longer with us. I cant thank him enough for the interview he gave us, and how many people have heard his words. I did not know when I made this film that it would generate over 7 million minutes of online streaming! James was a big part of the story behind this Documentary. Thank you James! Todd Kortte

I’ve never been. This morning my curiosity was sparked. I began with a cup of coffee and a search of “burning man” and the list of videos I began watching. This video helped me understand another aspect of what the human receives at the festival. Along with the fun, creativity, freedom it is an opportunity to cleanse the spirit. One solid thing the festival stands on: love. The way a human wants it and gives it will never change. At the temple part of this video is where I got choked up.

The temple looks so awesome with only a clear sky to frame it and no other structure to interfere with our appreciation of those beautiful arches. The desert landscape makes every thing you look at so well defined and meaningful. It must be absolutely incredible to bike around at night with all those brightly colored objects flying around.

And show you how crazy it can get very quickly. Dust masks are essential for BM. You'll be glad you brought a good one that filters out the dust. Not these wimpy masks we wear today.

Really great summaries from people about what it is and how it feels to be there. I’ve been through a dust storm or two in my 4 burns though none for a whole day. Also a heavy downpour of rain followed by very muddy shoes for a while. It was amazing how little any of that mattered; the vibe of the experience is so congenial, comforting and inspiring. One year i was there for a full week; watching this city rise up out of the desert and fold back in again. Very meaningful though very ephemeral. The art installations are not to be missed. The mountains rising out of the flat horizon. For two months after i get back home, little things that annoy and irritate me the rest of the year just don’t bother me. Is it like being in a Mad Max movie? yes but combined with Carnavsl and Fellini movies. The playa - the ancient lake bed - just gives us a nice spread out area to experience and share it in. It’s more about being there than the philosophizing - this video just happens to be about the philosophizing aspect. It’s more like being a kid again and seeing the world with eyes of wonder and surprise. And each time it took me a day and a half to really get into it. But so worth it and each year very very different from each other year!

You're welcome Todd. It really did clear up everything i was thinking about. This looks like the type of place and meaning that the world could learn alot from. I found alot of things i like in your film, i actually wished it was longer lol. It showed me that there still can be hope for humanity.

I was struggling on the length. Hours of content didn't make it into the film. I almost thing some scenes are too long. Its hard these days to keep viewers attention while also trying to educate. I am really happy at those who keep watching to the end. The film is structured to have a rising action...Temple Burn being the peak. To cut yourself short and ditch out around 10 minutes is depriving you of all that the story is building. I was actually having a conversation with my Producer Anna about making just a Dust/Temple Burn short clip with those with attention deficits :)

Beautiful documentary. I did not even know there was a Temple at BM each year. I see now that its fire was the poignant part of the whole experience of being there. Also you showcased the art much better (day AND night) than was done in the other vids I found on YT.

This is now on my list of things i must do, before leaving this existence. I've always heard of/about burning man and always knew kinda about...just as like a 3rd party in a convo/word of mouth or of course social media, whatever it may be. I've "known about" burning man for probably a decade now. Known of is maybe a better phrase to use. Anyhoo, I've been binging BM videos right now and I'm in awe 😶😲🤩😍🤗🥰😶💗. I myself, have a genetic, progressive illness in which there is no cure called Ehlers Danlose Syndrome. I am only 28 and upon just/first looking at me, you'd think I'm perfectly healty...yet just under the surface, I am actually incredibly ill... and only get sicker as i age. In the "invisible" illness community, we're known as zebras. If you hear hoof steps, you'll immediately think a horse is coming...you'll not be on the look out for a zebra. Anyways... haveing EDS sometimes makes me feel like an alien lol. Sometimes in the most amazing, self empowering yet very humbling ways! All of which im tremendously thankful for. And in also, ways in which can be very frustrating, isolating and very lonely. And truthfully, I am also grateful for that as well...in which without I'd not appreciate the good nearly as much. So something about this festival just makes me feel this undeniable sense of peace... and this is literally just from watching maybe half a dozen videos on it (including this one. Which is my favorite). To me its just seems like all of us people, celebrating life and love and the present...the right now...and also is all about celebrating YOU and what makes you uniquely who you are and were meant to be (before the worlds society brought ya down) but at same time VERY MUCH celebrating what makes you exactly the same as everyone else around you... and everyone else in this world...or even more! Everyone is an outcast, yet completely and unapologetically belongs! If that makes any sense at all lol. In my mind it does... not so sure if it correlates lol. But it just seems absolutely magical and so very real and vulnerable at the same time. It is kind of the embodiment of complete freedom but with personal responsibility. When people are intrusted with good...with a sense of goodness...to be kind, to be self reliant, to be selfless, to be very giving and generous and very open, ect... yet in all reality you are entirely free to do as you please, you'll find that.99.99% of the people will do good. Its about expectations...of others...but of yourself first and foremost. And when everyone has that same selfless, inclusive and self reliant mind set...it just makes for this crazy amazing society of SOOO many different type of like minded humans... coming together for a common purpose of love, life, growth and giving. I can only imagine that you leave this week long event, feeling as if you've been gone, to an alternate reality for like a like year! lol. Though the beauty is that it isn't an alternate reality... it IS our reality! Just goes to show ya, your reality is what YOU make it. YOUR brain creates your reality. Just the same as when you're dreaming (most often) you don't realize it and the world around you is just as real as anything else you've ever experienced when you're "awake". So then, who's to say this life, this existence isn't anything more than a dream. Bottom line though, control your mind...create your reality. It seems to me as if Burning Man is a week long, great, huge physical manifestation of a reminder of just that! You are the Universe...we are all yet a small part of it and entirely it at the same time. You DO have the power and ability to create your own reality. BM reminds us of our unlimited abilities and capabilities...seems to help us learn, grow and explore them (explore your YOUniverse in depth and freely). To then bring back with you more of those awakened aspects and ideologies and apply them to your every day. ...just wow. Beautiful! I hope to be able to attend at least once, one day. Because of my chronic and progressive illness it'll be quite tough! But in a way, its one of the more reason to go! I want to challenge myself in all aspects...physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. ✌ & 🤟

What many people regard as a flaw, I regard as a beauty mark. You are a truly beautiful person. Your words speak to me as if they were my own thoughts. I feel as if I have known you all my life, or at least searched for you that long. Accept my unconditional love and all best wishes for the future. See you on the other side of the curtain, cause it won't be heaven without you.
