I find that there's something really honorable in being OK with doing things solo. Especially now when everyone seems to want validation through others, with social media, lots of people can't do it I bet

Evan Lasrich yeah that’s why he filmed it the whole time to post it to you tube. He did it for the publicity of doing it alone so your statement makes no fucking sense. The only thing anyone cares about is how they’re viewed online.

People hating on the idea of going alone (with or without posting it on social media) are just too weak or scared to do it themselves, lol.

I have been 2 years now...While I bet it would cost a bit more to bring with you, I HIGHLY recommend a Kodiak tent to at least give you some shelter from the dust. As far as going solo goes, I almost did that last year but, fortunately, was invited by the lead of a local camp, I had no knowledge of, to join them. I am really happy I took him up on the invite. I have become very good friends with several of my camp mates and plan to continue camping with them in the future. With them being local, it makes me feel better about being a part of this group since I can help out before, during and after the burn. Also, I quit drinking over 2 years ago and am glad I can enjoy Burning Man so much with out my mind being altered. I remember EVERYTHING...lol

I rode in with some friends doing an installation but other than that I was solo the entire burn (except for the time I spent with all of the awesome new friends I made which was every waking moment besides what little sleep I did get). Met some amazing people and several new friends I'll have for life. Into the dust & to the wolves. Best way to experience anything, especially a soul journey like the burn

First time I went alone too. Thanks to online communities I was able to learn a lot in the two weeks I had to prepare. I was only coming from LA, so about 600 mile drive pretty convenient really. I used the "Burner Virgins" group on facebook to find a camp (which I thought you had to have, I didn't realize that it was mostly just open camping XD) though that turned out to be fun having a 'home base.' My neighbours ended up becoming great friends and I camp with them now; I went to two of their wedding a couple months ago. I also drove somebody up there who needed a ride; I met her by posting on the burner rideshare page that I had extra space in my car. So it wasn't 100% alone in that regard, but I consider it alone since I walked into the room knowing nobody and made friends once inside. My tip: just cover food, water, shelter, and clothing for the week; everything else is a bonus. You can find ways to get involved ahead of time or when you get there. Everyone is really open to offering and accepting help since there aren't any hidden/transactional motives. And stay away from the main "Burning Man" facebook group - sometimes you find good humour, but it's mostly a bunch of trash-talking and arguing like the rest of the Internet. Very NOT-burner attitudes and vibes in there. You may find local burner groups that meet at bars or somewhere (not right now obv, but when things are more normal again). It'll be the best thing you do for yourself!

HI Scotty, Way to go. I had my first burn also and travelled over alone from Australia. Sure was an eye opener. SO much to see and do and so much I didnt see. Missed out on getting naked and washed down but did walk in to a bar at the right time offering Absinth and got excited when I spun the wheel and got the bar tenders special, but to my shocked surprise it was no drink - As I got spanked and slapped from both ends - I think I needed that - I was then ready for burning man. Actually probably still not prepared till we finally were at one with the dust way out as far as we could ride as the temple burned. It was a beautiful moment with great friends. We finally got lost - pretty damn funny. I was then a dark wad all the way home on a Yellow or should I say green bike with no lights (as mine disappeared, but all part of the fun) it made strange sounds with every peddle, but we eventually found our way back to camp to change it up to discover what else we could find in the night/morning ahead. What an ADVENTURE!!!! Till next time )"(

I did that in 2016 and it turned out awesome! If you go into a free-camping area you'll generally form a camp pretty quickly. It's probably nearly impossible to bring other people if you're traveling that far.

I nearly went in 2016 and was even staying at the Green Tortoise Hostel, who are the only authorised tour providers for it, but decided not to as it was a lot of prep for 1 person already travelling for month. If I would go again, it would be alone. 99% of the time I travel alone and I have a much better and rewarding time for it. I have met so many wonderful people travelling and you make many friends who invite you back, which doesn't really happen when you are not alone.

Jeff, yeap, I feel the same way hands down. I have also heard that people that go alone frequently end up finding adopted families/camps. The catch with going alone though is, it's much more logistically difficult.. you have to bring a ton of stuff. Tent, shade structure(one with room to hang in AND to go over your tent), food, water, grey water disposal etc. You could go easy on food and eat out of cans etc for a week but.. ugh. no. Precook, vacuum seal and freeze everything. Then heat it up in the freezer bag in warm water for like 30mins on the playa.. reuse the same water to do so as much as possible.

You have to bring everything you need to sustain your life for a week. Food, water, shelter, clothing etc. You are not able to purchase anything there, because it is an event that wants to be free from the advertising, marketing and selling of goods. One of the principles of Burning Man is Gifting. People gift food and drinks, and other things, and share with one another, but you need to be prepared to be self reliant. So the only things you can purchase are ice ( to maintain cold food temperatures and keep people from getting sick from spoiled food ) and coffee. The proceeds from the sales of coffee go to support different local charities in the Northwest area of Nevada, so they are not trying to profit from the sales. Think of it like you would, it if you were to be going out into the middle of the wilderness in the mountains.
