It's really unfortunate that a lot of people use howlite to make steaks of different Stones cuz it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and it technically is a mineral that crystallizes and it is really cool how it's made but I've been screwed over on turquoise and a couple of other types of gemstones or crystals or whatever and it was because people used howlite and dyed it or colored it and try to sell it as something else usually different kinds of turquoise anyways I was trying to buy some turquoise cuz turquoise doesn't grow naturally in the state of Maine and that was one stone I really really wanted she's how old was I I can't remember I think I was like early twenties maybe I'm 34 now and I had some genuine turquoise it was Handmade by my dad's wife who is 100% Native American to the New Mexico area so yeah she sent me up some handcrafted jewelry with turquoise and I wanted to buy some turquoise to make my own bracelet to go with it and if you go into a craft store you can get like mid-grade jewelry quality crystals beads to make jewelry with and so I found some turquoise and I was like oh well it's 1299 it's kind of crazy it's so cheap maybe it's on sale I got on I got on the internet back then there weren't smartphones really yet and I was checking how to test for fake turquoise and I did and so there's a couple different ways you can test turquoise to see if it's real my favorite is without having to scratch the item or gouge it I take a hundred percent acetone nail polish on a cotton ball or Q-tip and you rub it on the stone in question, it was a fake. Now I love turquoise its apart of my heritage, I don't know if a lot of people know this but a lot of a turquoise mines that were founded in the United States earlier years a lot of those mines are almost depleted and they're very expensive now because there's not a lot of it left so while my sister was down in New Mexico she bought up a couple pieces from a mine called the Burnham mine and I asked her to get me a couple pieces and it was not cheap it cost $40 for two very small tear. Drop shape and there's only like 200 pounds of it left in existence because they're going to be shutting down the mine that has that turquoise pain in it because there's not very much left and I think that's a very good idea do you know it's a very good idea there's other Minds that have bigger veins are turquoise and these older ones I think they should be shut down and you know kept is historical landmarks

If you can scratch it with steel, it's serpentine. If it leaves a metal streak on the stone that wipes off, it's Jade. Jade also holds heat and cold very well. If it's low quality jade, it is very inexpensive Jade. You have to use a quality knife to get the right result. But if the surface of the stone scratches at all with a knife, serpentine. Jade won't scratch.

Unfortunately most people who claim they have Turquoise have dyed Howlite. Real quality pieces of Turquoise have a gemmy appearance. You can see the light penitrate the surface of the stone. It isn't opaque with a slightly chalky look like Howlite.

I’m pretty sure the people who produced them thought of the fact that people were gonna test then to see if they were real or not. I personally think they were just for kids and to LOOK like a real one or just be for a fashionable cause.

So they can charge more money. PERIOD. It's more expensive "sounding" than saying it's imitation or plastic. Since it's not "cheap" cheap, that will entice folks to think it's real. THEY SUCK. I saw their beads before in person. I did t FEEL RIGHT, and put those joints back on the shelf. They can just advertise as fashion jewelry, smh

"That black stuff" is called soot, it's from the lighter itself and the way the fuel combusts, leaving behind the soot. It has nothing to do with the reaction of the crystal itself to heat. If you held the lighter to a piece of glass it would do the exact same thing.

This really surprised me that people go to this extent to “fake” some of the most inexpensive crystals. I could see something like Larimar or even rainbow moonstone beads being faked, but real rose quartz beads are fairly inexpensive compared to almost all other crystals so this was surprising to me! @@Ash_Wynn Yes to shape a rock you have to use blade of machines like lathe machine for cutting,grinding stone for finishing the smooth look etc and extreme precision, but for plastic all you need is a dye and mould and just pour hot plastic in it and take shape as it cools.Plus in case of shaping real stone, cleaning is big issue as a lot of small pieces are left in grinding, also have to be careful of setup so that injuries are avoided. If its automatic lathe, proper coding is needed, if manual machine operator has to be highly skilled as one mistake and raw material is totally wasted or would not remain in specific dimension designed. Shaping one stone will take quiet some time no matter how much automated machinery is, but for plastic, mould and dye for several beads can be made once and only thing left is to pour hot plastic properly and remove any extra flash.

Hello. I’m a custom jeweler who cuts a number of my own stones and there are some things that might help assist you in your testing. While you are correct that stone won’t burn per-se, there are a number of standardized treatments that are at times done to some kinds of stone to stabilize or enhance them. The stabilization is generally done by permeating the stone with an epoxy resin to make it durable enough for practical use. The resin or epoxy will often melt or burn when exposed to direct flame and even intense heat which is indirect. This can damage or destroy a stone that is otherwise ‘natural’. Also, there are a number of stones that even without treatments can be severely damaged or destroyed by intense heat or flame. Opal is one such stone. It is a stone with a silicate rather than a crystalline structure. The ‘fire’ and color shifts you see in opal is caused by small amounts of water which are trapped between the silica nodules of the stone creating a literal prismatic effect when the light hits the stone at various angles. Not only will heat and flame evaporate the water destroying the stones color, it can also cause it to explode. Even hard stones such as quartz can be adversely effected. Both amethyst and citrine are types of quartz. The only difference is the heat that they were exposed to as they formed. This is why you can find natural ametrine which is a stone with both the purple of the amethyst and the yellow of the citrine. Heating these stones can enhance or destroy the color. The crystal might remain but the things that give the stone it’s inherent characteristics can be destroyed. Be careful please. Finally stones can contain internal imperfections or liquid that won’t be detected. When heated these things can cause a stone to shatter. Sometimes explosively. Please be careful. You can look up online what kinds of stones shouldn’t be exposed to heat or fire at all, what temperatures others will burn at and the MOH’s hardness of stones to see, within certain parameters, how durable they are. I hope this helps. I truly think that your love of stones and wanting to use your channel to encourage this love in others plus educate them about their stones is absolutely wonderful and I hope that you continue to do so!

GTK, but be careful with amber as it is a hardened sap and not stone, either. High heat will deform and/or melt it, depending on its age.

@@alyssaholmes2135 it's basically a thick dust that forms when smoke touches an object. If you've ever seen Mary Poppins, the chimney sweeps are getting soot out of the chimneys, and the dirt all over them is soot.

Thank you! Sadly, a friend got me a "malachite" bracelet from Amazon for my birthday and I could tell it was plastic. (Didn't tell her, of course.) Just tested it and yes, the beads bubbled and started to melt. Amazon has basically gotten as bad as Wish.

Also it's worth to notice not just the insides, but worth to look outside the unusual patterns. Real malachite doesn't have odd stripes and colours that real malachite does have. All do just Google fake malachite and it looks like clay made by layers.

I want to mention about the roller isn't jade either serpentine. Most of them are just marbles, onyx or other common marble stone. It's real stone but not the stones crystals. Just a marble.

@@th-ck9vl Jade roller is now used as a name for the product, not for the material. So for example with rose quartz it would be called rose quartz jade roller. With amethyst it is amethyst jade roller etc. Then there is another option of the seller not knowing it. Minerals have been forged or replaced for a long time now. And as long as a specialist doesn't check each and every piece, there might always be some forgeries in between. That's also the risk with buying these things on Amazon, the seller may really believe they're selling you jade when it's not. Sometimes even for the price which you would expect from real jade.

I work at a precious stone and gemstone wholesaler and any stone that is carved/shaped unnaturally are usually broken down into powder and remixed with a very hard wax to make them possible to carve and shape easily. It is a very common practice and the stones are still real, they are just remixed with wax.

They are no longer stones. And that is probably some of the cheapest techniques to shape stones because expensive stones are carved.

I think it’s important to remember that different minerals have different reactions to different tests (fire, water, acid, temperature, hardness, etc) and some of the reactions might not be safe and/or damage your mineral even if it’s real. Please remember to do your research about each individual mineral before doing anything to them! 😌

Exactly I know a lot of citrine is created by burning amethyst. The stone looks like brown crystals. It doesn’t mean the stone is plastic, every stone has a different reaction to the elements.

I think on both bracelets it's the stone bead with small gold colored beads on either side. That kind of serves to separate the gemstone from the plastic. Hopefully she grabbed the couple real stone beads before throwing them all away.

Some crystals do have reactions to heat (like apophyllite...which is more like a mineral but not really a mineral sort of deal...but anyway it'll flake apart). However, I think everyone should get their crystal bracelets from a crystal shop :) Just to be on the safe side. Jade rollers too, they're just stones or glass and not Jade gemstones. Scams!

I bought the 5 below ones and saw that the "middle bead" ( between the gold part)is different from the other ones. Try burning the middle bead and see if that one is authentic! It feels different when leaping on my teeth too. Weird.

This is a common practice. They use one real or glass stone on the jewellery and the rest are fake. It's to avoid being sued. This way they are technically selling you the genuine product (unless they're using a glass imitation bead) as they never state all parts of the jewellery are made from the real gem.

I did the same with my obsidian/onix (I don't remember which it is right now) and rose quartz 😂 they're cold as heck. Also my obsidian/onix has a piece lacking (grandma dropped it), and you can see on the tip that broke the smooth shiny glass-like crystal surface too, so I know for sure it's real.

Serpentine usually has pyrite everywhere so this one most likely some granite level stone or onyx

Also I have had trouble with ordering a silver chain...Rhett often say silver but it’s only silver in color...I had seen a method of testing silver a few years ago and my friends still can’t believe it works while they watch it lol. Put a ice cube on the test object and if it melts like normal room temperature it isn’t silver, if it starts melting like you had thrown it in a hot frying pan on the stove then it’s real silver

As someone who makes resin "crystals" I know how to make white/clear swirls in the light pink to make "rose quartz". I make mechanical keyboard keycaps, and actual crystals are too heavy and could press the key simply from the weight.

They aren’t necessarily fake but they aren’t actual crystals They are a man made gemstones made from rocks that have been heated and pressurized over long periods of time to form ‘crystals’. They don’t usually come very large and they’re pretty cheap, it’s pretty much costume jewelry

on both bracelets there was one bead that looked different from the others (on the rosequartz one, there was a lighter coloured bead between those two golden ones and on the other bracelet the "special bead" had darker lines and the white looked different as well) so cozld it be that these two beads were actually real crystals? Yes it wouldn't burn, but there are other ways to test glass, I not a professional on this and have limited knowledge, but glass shouldn't melt when using a normal lighter

Yeah even a tiny little jade bead could be hundreds of dollars for authentic jade. A completely authentic jade roller could not cost less than $100 with low quality jade, good quality would be $500+

Here in nz Jade/green stone is very sacred for us. Us maori use it for carvings and to wear as a taonga (treasure). It is believed to be full of mana (strength/power)... Its very very expensive. We also don't buy it for ourselves but as a gift for someone else.

if its serpentine you can scratch it with a knife blade and it would leave a scratch mark u cant wipe off. if its real jade it will not leave a scratch mark because jade has a higher hardness lvl than serpentine.

A knife's hardness is around 5 and some serpentine can have a hardness ranging upto 6. So you'll need a steel nail or a piece of glass to do the scratch test.

I tried this a few months ago! I had my doubts going into it but wanted to actually see what I was buying. 5 Below was advertising crystal sets. They came with rose quartz, amethyst, howlite, and "turquoise". I already knew the turquoise would be fake and if it was a stone at all it would probably just be dyed howlite. I tried burning them and the turquoise didn't react but the howlite did. It never caught fire but it left a brown mark on it that can't be wiped off and it had a plastic smell. However the rose quartz and amethyst seem to be legit or maybe glass. I am not really sure. They didn't burn or discolor. I also bought a mystery crystal from there. It's definitely a real crystal. I is a raw crystal that is suppose to be an incense holder. I am pretty sure it is dyed though. It's bright green. Still really pretty though. Glad I am not the only one who dared to burn crystals. Haha

You can also use a jewelry loupe to see if the jade is real. If it is jade you’ll see the hair like strands that jade has.

Im so glad you got a real crystal. It’s an awful feeling to get duped with crystals (I’ve been there). Something about citrine that I didn’t know early on was that most citrine sold is actually baked amethyst. All 3 are quartz, but there is way more amethyst on the earth than citrine, therefore citrine is more expensive and harder to find. When baked, amethyst turns orange with a hint of brown and yellow. It will develop some properties of citrine-some people are ok with this and others feel duped and want the real deal, even if it’s more expensive (but don’t assume price =real and not modified. Some stones are painted to look like more expensive stones like quartz can also be stained yellow or howlite, which is cheap, will be painted blue to look like the very expensive turquoise stone. When you have a stone in mind you want to purchase, research real vs fake of that stone so you know what to look for ahead of time.

i found that the brcelets like the rose quartz one, there is an area on the bracelet where theres dividers and in between the dividers would be the actual crystal. the rest would be plastic or clay. i tested it out too

Way too many companies small or large do false advertising. They advertise artificial Mica powder as real. They advertise resin casted or glass crystals as real Moldavite/Howlite/insert crystal here. I see swirls in that rose quartz plastic which is a huge tip-off for being fake. Rose quartz does not have swirly inclusions. Another tip-off is bubbles or too much uniformity. Real amber has a pine-sap or forest smell and will be lighter than most plastic. Amber is also one the few crystals that can be real with bubbles. Another thing to check for each stone or crystal is Mohs scale hardness and solubility. Many crystals will melt or change color due to water or salt water.

To a point. You still need something that gives off the same "vibe" per say, like fake rose quartz for rose quartz, or fake jade for jade. You can't just grab a thing of concrete and expect it to help.

You got lucky with the "jade" (and I agree it's serpentine. I have one, I like it, and I had no expectations of it being Type A jade.) Most cheap jade is treated, meaning it's stabilized with plastics and dyed. If you decide to get good jade jewelry at some point, find a seller who guarantees theirs to be Type A untreated jadeite.

2:21 the black deposits are because of an incomplete combustion of the butane (or any combustable source). It's carbon deposits, basically. It can be a great survival firestarter when gathered.

Glass is hard to tell, it will be completely clear with no natural inclusions, it will have small bubbles and it will be lighter weight! Hope that helps!

Jade is a hard thing to point out sometimes, the name refers to any green stone being the stone of heaven so anything green can be argued as jade. But industry wise Nephrite and Jadeite are seen as Jade.
