I can't count the number of times growing up I've been told "blah blah you're a bright kid yadda yadda not applying yourself." The more aspies tell me about this exact experience, the more I wonder whether this is just public schools' historical failure to deal with kids on the spectrum. Not saying crazy childhood didn't contribute since mine was sunshine and rainbows by comparison, but you definitely reminded me of faculty feigning disappointment in the "weird kids."
