Thank you for this video! There's so much wisdom here and while I was listening/watching I had a bunch of realizations. The first one was that I expect WAY TOO MUCH from my fountain pen hobby because I'm not working outside the home anymore ... this presents a challenge .... and I think I need a sub hobby from my fountain pen hobby in order to sometimes "escape" it. I'm unlikely to go back to hourly paid work outside the house again and I do live a "retired" lifestyle now. Next, I thought about how now that I'm out of the acquiring phase as the main focus in the pen hobby ... that presents a major shift in "payoff" in terms of finding my WHY for doing videos ... I still strongly enjoy the fact that people comment that a video cheered them up and I love that sense of contributing (up to a point). But, with not really trying to earn more revenue to buy more pens it will be interesting ... I need to develop strong whys and maybe think bigger and longer term too with purchases ... also I still need postage and notebooks even with lifetime supplies of ink and pens. :) I got away from accepting things from companies (except I did accept a 4 pen case from Lochby recently but I also turned down their invite to become some sort of ambassador - that was something they invited me to apply for - which is common ... I've had a dozen companies ask me to apply for their affiliate or ambassador programs but I am afraid of the obligations) .... I don't want the obligation to do specific content or in any certain way. Oh gosh I could have listened to you talk about this for hours but I just really appreciate that you addressed it .... not that many people understand the whole double sword nature of the ad $. After I did my burn out video I realized I was mainly experiencing You Tube burn out not actually "fountain pen burn out". Your squirrel carving analogy was so so close to home - I totally get it and it was a perfect way to see how it works. LOL Totally that's how it was when I was doing ink videos and receiving a lot of feedback + and - on them. :) I've been keeping my mind and heart open to many possibilities and so far I've wanted to keep making fountain pen hobby videos but I continue to see more clearly how unbalanced my life is when I spend SO MUCH time on fountain pen videos, pen pal letters, pen acquiring, and even over consuming others' videos in the hobby. Last year in the fall when I was able to get outside and paint and work on home projects more I felt a lot more balanced and the pen hobby activities were a nice break/escape. Thank you so much Jason for taking the time to make this video and for sharing your thoughts with us. I will be listening again as it is I took a page of notes and have a lot of thoughts now that got generated from your sharing on the topic. ~Chris~

Hi, Chris. As you know, I enjoy your content and I'm glad you make some videos. What I find interesting is that you and I both commented from our different perspectives -- you as a content creator and me as a content consumer -- on how KZbin burnout is a factor. This has me wondering how much social media contributes to burnout, perhaps due to oversaturation. Pethaps that triggers burnout for some people. I'm trying to think back -- was hobby burnout less common before social media? I thought I was burning out on my pens and inks and now I realize I'm actually burned out on KZbin ( and to some extent Facebook posts). I'm playing with my pens this afternoon and I'm having a great time!

I always try to have multiple hobbies. Fountain pens are just one. It's easy to burn out on just one. Like you said, getting outdoors and doing other home projects helps balance. It's good to touch dirt! We both seem to be at a similar spot in videos. There will be new pens, but not so many. So what are other facets of the fountain hobby worth sharing. I've been thinking a lot about that. I've had a few companies approach me about being an ambassador or something equivalent as well. It was interesting because not one was a company I'd ever talked about on my channel. More KZbin $ would be fun, but I'm not comfortable with the other side of that. But I'm glad to know that the video helped you. That KZbin thing definitely interferes with true enjoyment of a hobby.

@@marilyngardner4269 Oh, fair and true enough. It’s the only way to go as a viewer/subscriber when you stop enjoying and even feel you dislike a certain channel and the style and approach of the creator behind it. There’s one channel that I initially and briefly somewhat liked. But very soon, I realized that the person’s patent phoniness, constant self-promotion and much else grated on my nerves. So, I unsubscribed and stopped watching. Excepting one recent video where I dropped a comment. There’s another old channel that annoys me no end. So, I’ve been off that one, too.

I understand virtually no one interested in fountain pens near me. Was kind of a random comment that found the one person in my town of just over 20,000, and the area screams "ILLITERATE!" to me (local paper, though bought by a national conglomerate, is rife with grammatical errors, and the one bookstore that remained died from a lack of interest.) Could get frustrating. But then there's my almost autistic obsession with vintage Esterbrook that keeps me motivated. 😂 Plus, the maintenance and restoration of vintage pens gives me something to do. Just enough to break up the monotony.😉 Never going to try to make it a business. Like you said, it'd take the fun out of it. Not interested in a KZbin channel. Face for radio, voice has aphasia from a stroke, that creeps in when least expected. And a very niche interest, mostly vintage Esterbrook, just sprinkled with other pens, anymore (still love the 1940s Wahl-Eversharp Skyline, the Sheaffer's Balance Junior, and others, but not enough to have enough material for content (besides, Brian Anderson kinda cornered the market for vintage Esterbrook. 😁) So I plug along, with a niche interest that is useful to me and keeps me out of (most) mischief. Will it change? Possibly, though I've been a fan boy of Esterbrook since the first one I got in 1983. Your channel, and others, help keep me curious and current. Thanks!

@WaskiSquirrel Helps that they're basically the only thing I can write with without pain, anymore, but the vintage ones will always have my interest. I have some cheap Chinese pens for the more "questionable" inks, but I mainly use the more "standard" ones, so safer for my beloved vintage pens. Don't see this changing anytime soon. 😁

Thanks for the insightful video. There's so much I want to say about this. First, letting go of hobbies can sometimes be difficult because of what they do for us -- they may give us a sense of identity or make us feel part of a community (something most humans crave). Not so easy to give up unless you have something else to replace it. So when burnout occurs anyway, you may dig in your heels and try to get the joy from that original hobby back. Otherwise you may need to rethink your identity. Second, you hit the nail on the head at around 41:00 when you said that burnout is different when you're a content creator. I think someone needs to speak for the KZbin consumers in this discussion. I understand that the pressure to create new content and the negative comments can lead to burnout. My own burnout of late is burnout with watching KZbin videos and not lack of enjoyment of my pens and inks. I've been home a lot due to an injury, and I think I started confusing the KZbin fountain pen community with the people in my real life. What finally snapped me out of it? I had some very pleasant email exchanges with a popular KZbinr and sent her a package of ink samples that she selected and wanted. Well, she was getting samples from everyone and. burned out on them, giving most away before she used them. She did find a favorite among the samples I sent and didn't acknowledge it came from me when she reviewed it (I could clearly see my handwriting on the sample vial), even though she usually does acknowledge her pen friends. I learned I should not have spent time and effort on this. I'm grateful to her for helping me realize that I need people in my real life...not KZbinrs who don't know me or care about me. I may need to find community in KZbin when I'm too frail to leave my house, but I'm not there yet. I am very selective in which KZbinrs I spend my precious free time watching now (I always watch yours, Waski!). Finally, I'd like to share my experience with comments to videos from the other side. I don't think I make nasty comments. But at times I may share a snippet of knowledge or an experience I've had in a similar situation. Some KZbinrs will engage in these conversations graciously (thank you, Chris Saenz), but others react defensively, as if we are questioning their authority in some way. Then they complain about negative comments. These KZbinrs fail to realize that sometimes commentors are addressing their comments to the whole community and not to them personally. We are sharing our experiences or tips others might find helpful. We don't have channels in which to do that so we do it in the comments. Some KZbinrs clearly don't enjoy this. I have also realized that I need to stay away from videos that display conspicuous consumption. Everyone has a right to spend their money however they choose, but when I see KZbinrs buying expensive pens and traveling the world to do it, "comparing mind" gets to me and makes me long for experiences I can't have (especially the travel). Another contributor to hobby burnout. I just know this is toxic for me personally and can sap my joy. Any hobby can feel like something that requires massive time, dedication, and expense -- the casual hobbyists like me are not on KZbin or Instagram, so we don't see our experiences confirmed on social media. There are other reasons I'm burnt out on fountain pen KZbins, and realistically it's my fault for pouring too much time into KZbin watching due to boredom, procrastination, being homebound, or plain old loneliness and longing for community. I started binge-watching during COVID and went straight from that to a really serious injury that had me homebound. Inevitably, we're hearing about burnout from the KZbinr perspective because...well...KZbinrs have channels. But burnout can have other causes for those of us who watch. My solution for now is to spend less time on KZbin, watch only a few favorite content creators, get back to the love of writing that made me love fountain pens in the first place, and seek out real-life experiences with real friends, books, my dog, time outdoors, and other pastimes. I do appreciate the effort KZbinrs make, but I have to engage with social media content in the way that works for me.

What an interesting and illuminating comment, Marilyn. Some of it resonates with my own feelings on the topic. Without elaborating too much, I have already mentioned here in my own post that I’ve really awfully wearied of watching YT pen channels. I even watch a little less of Waski than I used to before. Unlike you, I luckily never erred in imagining that anybody in the pen community (reviewer or fellow viewers) on YT are my real ‘friends’. And understandably so. None of them has ever seen or known me at all. Besides, even if they did, I don’t expect they’d automatically become my friends. So I harbor no illusions on that count. Re: the defensive attitudes and reactions of some pen reviewers to commenters whose posts on their videos they may resent and take too personally. Of course, it happens. I can testify to that. I’m bemused by it, too. And I’ve occasionally called people out on it. What I find particularly ridiculous is how the reviewer would start fishing for sympathy from other viewers and commenters by complaining about the perceived criticism or slight that he/she took needlessly too personally. And, on cue, some of the commenters would rush to express support in an often embarrassingly flattering, insincere and fawning manner. Epic cringe. And oh, sad to hear of your injury and the limitations that it entails. Hoping that you get past it very soon and feel stronger and more free again.

@@sajjadhusain4146 Thank you for the well wishes. I'm afraid some of the physical damage I experienced is permanent, but I can get around now, with slight difficulty. I also appreciate your understanding of my comments. I think that watching less KZbin content may be a sign of a type of burnout...but then again, it may be a return to sanity. 😂 I have noticed that some KZbinrs like to sign off with "if you have any questions, let me know." These are often the same KZbinrs who react defensively to comments. This is similar to what I am and am not open to in my emails to work colleagues. If I say "please let me know if you have any questions," this means that there is no room for their point of view (just do this thing I'm asking) but I'm happy to provide clarification. If I end the email with "please let me know if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions," then I am inviting collaboration. I am bemusef by this too, but I have dramatically decreased my engagement with most content (this video is an obvious exception). No point taking the time to comment if the comments are not appreciated. I am maintaining my fountain pen hobby but have gotten much more private with it. I am lucky to have a few local friends who enjoy talking about fountain pens, although none of them make it a central part of their lives.

You made a great point in your first paragraph. Sometimes we cling to things because to give them up is to give what we see as ourselves up. And thank you for sharing the perspective of people watching KZbin. Though I know some of the KZbinrs or commenters outside the channel, it's still only through writing letters. It's easy to feel like you know people when you really don't. I don't know how it was for the person who you sent the samples to, but for me, I'm always unsure if I have permission to identify them unless they explicitly give it to me. And you're right about comments: they are so easy to misinterpret. Emotion or mood do not come across easily in the written word, especially if someone is predisposed to feel attacked or questioned. A key to mental health is being selective about what we bring into our life, whether it's social media or otherwise. I think COVID got a lot of us into bad habits, especially if we live alone. KZbin makes a great background noise so you don't feel alone. One thing I've been doing more this summer is turning on music, or just enjoying silence. Sometimes it's good to just think. And we're learning to navigate this world of social media. A lot of us didn't grow up in it and have to learn those skills.

I now take all my hobbies much slower. I am no longer in rush to collect them all. I used to buy a new pen every week, but now I just get a pen on special occasions. I just started to learning Tai Chi for health and fitness reasons. I now prefer to practice for 5 minutes a day and will hopefully keep doing it every day. Hopefully it's something I will keep doing for as long as I am able. Quality is better than quantity. The journey is better than arriving.

Good comments all around. I'm starting to realize that experiences are better than things, and people in your life are even better yet. So I plan to enjoy the experiences and people while I'm still young enough and healthy enough to do so. But, as you say, go slow. I need to take the time to savor and enjoy. This video is part of a trip where I savored several really amazing hikes and took the scenic route. One day, when I was rained out of a hike, I explored a little and then returned to my room and read and wrote letters. A good, relaxing day even if I didn't do all that I planned.

I’ve been through different FP acquisition phases and burnouts (Retractable FP acquisition, Indian ebonite pen acquisition, dual nib pen acquisition, pocket pen acquisition, vintage pen acquisition to name a few). Currently I’m on a kind of permanent “FP acquisition fast”. The last pen I purchased was in 2023 at the first ever FP show in my city (which is a large metropolitan city known as Silicon Valley of India, but surprisingly lagging in FP culture compared to other major Indian cities). Thankfully I still use and rotate my FPs regularly and there’s no burnout here.. I’ve switched my hobby to collecting affordable watches (mainly Casios) and I’m in ‘acquisition mode’. Hobbies are what make us excited in our day to day life (as long as we’re able to exercise some restraint on our spending on our acquisitions).

I enjoyed your discussion on burnout and the various aspects and types of burnout, not focusing just on fountain pens. I’ve gone through the acquisition phase in this hobby. Currently, I’m working on enjoying the pens I have and not trying to acquire more, although the recent special edition Twsbi Eco Caffe Bronze just kept tugging at me when it first came out. I hadn’t felt a pen talk to me like that after I had passed through my acquisition phase. I also have plenty of inks to work through, so I still have plenty of pen/ink combinations to try out, so my interest remains piqued. I’m shocked and surprised Matt would receive nasty comments. I remember seeing his videos; there was nothing that was controversial or adversarial in his videos. I’m glad the fountain pen community is so thoughtful and supportive of each other, even the various vendors and businesses. Again, great discussion. 👍

I think it’s possible to accept funds or products and not feel an obligation, but it is difficult. The obligation is self imposed, but still real. You just need the discipline to avoid it. That’s why many companies offer a “no obligation” estimate or service. They know that most decent people won’t just walk away and say, “I’m not interested.” The obligation isn’t implied, but it’s real. I see people saying they’re doing an *honest* review for a product that they received for free. But how honest can it really be? Who is going to take a pen or product from the nice people who offer it to them, and then bash it publicly? Okay, maybe one person will, but I believe most won’t.

Comercials on KZbin: for those who have a vpn, point it to ALBANIA, KZbin don't advertise there ;-) Back to the burnout theme. I haven't been burned out but my experience with social medias invariably draws me to the same negative (sorry) conclusion: social medias are the school of hatred. I admire you all KZbinrs for your resilience. I'd rather be a follower and do my own stuff outside of social medias. For example: I write books and publish them (hence my deep interest in fountain pens), I've several thousands of readers but they very rarely comment on my books, which I don't mind after all. Keep up the great, so human, so personal, excellent videos! Cheers.

I think it comes down to what truly brings you joy and gives you pleasure. I enjoy people, otherwise I wouldn't be a teacher, but I need to get away from them after a while!
