You made the right choice on calling it when you get frustrated. We all deal with it. Super nice table. Also I like the videos of actually watching you work and talk during the project, voice overs are ok but seeing your humor and problem solving makes for a funny and interesting video.

The struggle is REAL! Appreciate you showing us that it's not always easy, even though we think it might be. Also, if you don't want to sell all of your tools, perhaps only use the bare minimum tools to start with (or buy cheap used ones), and then add in using your nice green ones only after you've made the money for them through sells. Just a thought. Keep up the great content!

The struggle is real. I made a very simple pine coffee table the last few days out of scrap wood. Nothing was straight and after I stained it it bowed on me. I was about 3 seconds to bringing it outside and getting a workout in with my axe. Great video and awesome table. I have what I believe is a softwood slab that I might try to make one of these out of.

If you haven’t already sold the tools, just try to make a series where you identify the next tool you want to “buy” and build a project for sale with the base level tools to show that with that project, you can buy the next tool. Don’t actually sell your tools but just show the build with the base tools and level up and add the next too you “buy” with the profit from the last job. Can start with a hand saw, tape measure, and a hammer, and then end up with something major.

I have a bit of a remix of your "sell it all" idea. Do you know anybody who wants to get started in woodworking? Take them under your wing and let that be the series since they'll be starting without the tools or experience. Watching them progress, learn, earn, and buy would be pretty interesting, and you'd be helping somebody in the process. I think following someone who hasn't already done it would be more relatable than following someone who has.
@burnstockwoodworking
@burnstockwoodworking Жыл бұрын
Interesting idea. I'll consider it. I just have a lot of time constraints with working a full time job and doing this and the business as a side hustle. I'm gonna give that take some serious consideration
@BR0JASON
@BR0JASON Жыл бұрын
@@burnstockwoodworking Thanks. I understand the constraints, so it might not be feasible. Jeff Cavaliere at Athlean X did something similar with his employee Jesse, and it worked out well for him content-wise. It gives you and the audience a fresh perspective. He who teaches learns twice.

I was assembling a case with rabbets last night, and realized in the middle of it one of the parts was marked wrong and the shelf pin holes were not going to line up 🤦‍♂ripped it apart, ate dinner, came back to it and got it figured out. I'm one of those people who cannot go to sleep if something like that is 'out there'. I just toss and turn thinking about it.

It looks like you went from "Please" clamps to "I was just being nice, but no more" clamps! I've got a similar walnut slab sitting in my shop that I've been itching to turn into a coffee table but for every reason you're experiencing is the reason I haven't yet. When I get frustrated in the shop, windows cower in fear lol. For the video preference, I like the ones where you're talking as you're working. Voiceover is good if you have audio issues like at the miter saw so you wouldn't have to scrap that footage. Really the only videos I click away from are the ones with just crappy music and no explanation of what's going on.
@burnstockwoodworking
@burnstockwoodworking Жыл бұрын
It was one thing after another and then, after working through all of the issues, when I started editing half of the footage audio was completely unusable. This one is one for the burnstock history books, a lot was learned lol.

If you have enough materials for certain projects, why not do two videos. One with basic hand tools vs one with the expensive tools?
@burnstockwoodworking
@burnstockwoodworking Жыл бұрын
I may try that. I even considered starting an entirely new business, channel, everything and growing it from absolutely nothing (no following, portfolio, etc.). Still brainstorming, thanks for the input!

I think video name and thumbnail will do more than selling your tools. Videos named ‘Make X with 3 tools’ or ‘Building a blank with blank tools’ goes farther. You can always just move some tools out of the room if you don’t want them to show in background. The illusion of less tools is enough.
@burnstockwoodworking

Here is something of a compromise for your idea. Don't sell your tools, Put them in storage, then pull them out as you got the money to "upgrade". This keeps your wife happy and lets you make your point.
