Burnt Sienna: Is it PBr 7 or PR 101?

I use Transparent Red Oxide as my "Burnt Sienna" type tone in my palette and I have Daniel Smith's Burnt Umber in there too as it's warm and it gives me a PBr7 that isn't too far from Burnt Sienna. I have done entire sketches with just DS French Ultramarine and DS Transparent Red Oxide and they neutralize beautifully. I was also impressed with the way TRO mixes with other colors (as per Oto Kano's comparison video with Quin Burnt Orange and Burnt Sienna). It can neutralize a color some but do it in a way where they colors still glow.

Genuine Sienna is pr102 and synthetic one is pr101. Pbr7 is the synthetic version of pbr8 which is genuine umber.

I prefer Quinacridone Burnt Orange (PO48) as the “Burnt Sienna” on my palette because I’m not a huge fan of granulation. Also quinacridone colors tend to mix well with phthalos, and Phthalo Blue Red Shade (PB15:6) and Phthalo Green Blue Shade (PG7) make a gorgeous range of vibrant to earthy greens with Quin Burnt Orange.

Great video, Teoh, enjoy these comparisons! I use DS Burnt Sienna in my travel palette, it's so versatile for urban sketching and landscapes. I like the almost pink quality it gets in washes, has the right glow for the Pacific Northwest. I had switched to DS TRO for awhile, but it's more assertive in mixes and a little more orange, so went back to DS BS. I do understand how people divide into either the redder burnt sienna (DS) or the oranger burnt sienna (WN) camps, they're very different in how they mix. I add Quin Burnt Orange to BS if I want the warmer WN BS effect, but I think I have an old tube of WN, might try it again. Also, I think the new DS Burnt Sienna Light may have been meant to be similar to WN BS. Love reading all the comments on how people use burnt sienna and mixes. lots of great tips.

I recently switched to a Daniel Smith palette where I've been using quinacridone burnt orange in place of my W&N burnt sienna; I think it's a pretty good match. For the way I use this color, I really wanted something luminous and non-granulating. Thank you for the very useful comparison!

I love PR 101!! Transparant red oxide is a fantastically versatile color. I have both TRO and burnt sienna on my palette and the do different things for me. TRO is a stunning mixer. It's also very appropriate for where I live. I was in Sedona Arizona yesterday and there is literally red iron oxide color everywhere. Very good for bricks and buildings as well. As a side note, Dr. Oto does a really great showdown featuring TRO and its clearly a great choice. Thanks Teoh!!!

I love winsor newton version the best. I love the mixing of the different versions of greys you get. The color mixing is beautiful. I will be sticking to winsor newton for burnt sienna.

Love this kind of colour comparison, thanks Teoh. W&N BSienna is at the edge of what I'd call an 'Earth Tone"; it looks like QuinBurntOrange, or Sennelier ChineseOrange. I'm going to remember how it mixes with Phthalo Blue, that looks like verdigris! (like, an oxidized copper roof)

Been learning alot from you Teoh! Thank you for your comprehensive reviews and experimentation. You also have excellent lighting in your videos, giving a true sense of watercolour shades. I have found that many other watercolour review channels have such high contrast and brightness, that they skew the reality of the colour. I also like the way you mix your colours, allowing them to bleed into one another to give unpredictable results, so thanks for teaching me how to mix better too. Lastly, your close-ups are mesmerising, really great camera work.

Mistake at 1:17. WN Burnt Sienna is PR101. Schmincke Transparent Sienna is PR101, Schmincke Burnt Sienna is PR101 + Pbk9

Great comparison! I have Italian Burnt Sienna but it's not at all intense and doesn't rewet well. Transparent Red and Brown Oxides look amazing with granulation and mixes. Will replace my Burnt Sienna with Red Oxide in the future. M.Graham's Quinacridone Rust (PO48) looks browner than usual Quin Burnt Oranges, so that may be a closer match to the W&N your viewer is looking for.

Hi Teoh, very well timed. I have used WN Burnt sienna for years and I loved it's warm amber glow but its not great at making darks. Sometimes you can drop it into ultramarine and it knocks the colour out completely like bleach. It's great for subtle greys but damn near impossible to get a strong black like dark. I just bought some Sennelier burnt Sienna PBR7 and it was a bit of a shock to see this Brick red Sienna... but it makes instant darks with ultramarine. Just cant get used to seeing this brick red colour in my palette - I associate burnt sienna on the palette as a dark brown.

My favorite is Rembrandt burnt sienna and I use it to layer over yellow ochre for trees, mushrooms, & such. (I don’t tend to use it to make greys.) Interesting comparison , thanks

Hi Teoh! Thank you for the comparison! What a coincidence in the sense that this week I was doing a similar task as I was not happy with my grays and did not have DS Burnt Sienna in my palette although I do have that color in my drawer. I noticed WN was more red, so i tried that, but the grays were limited there, like you said. TBO was better, but still not what i wanted. Long story short, i added DS Burnt Sienna to my palette to test it out on sketches and removed TRO. I do not have Schminke's BS, only their Transparent BS, and forgot I even had it, so I will try that today! Thanks again - great exercise!

I use M.Graham Transparent Red Iron Oxide for my Burnt Sienna PR101. I wanted to try out some M.Graham paints after watching Mind of Watercolor. I use mostly DS paints but I do enjoy the consistency and colors of M.Graham. On my monitor it looks like it is the color and texture between DS Brown & Red Iron Oxide. Thanks for your vid...

I have the similar pickiness towards burnt sienna, I love the thinned down version of W&N although I've never tried one, but the burnt sienna of van gogh feels quite like the W&N being compared in the video.

Buenas...; para mi gusto, el mejor azul para mezclar con el PR101 es el azul de cobalto oscuro, y en especial el azul de cobalto oscuro de winsor&newton PB74. Schmincke también tiene un tierra de siena trasnsparente pr101 muy bonito (n°653) que combina a la perfección con el Pb74. Saludos.

Burnt sienna is one of my go-to favs when painting pet portraits. I tried quite a few but I like Holbein and Cotman best for colour, though I don't use Cotman for my client work. I got the W&N professional burnt sienna thinking it would look like the cotman, but be better quality, but for some reason, it's redder/cooler and granulates more. Did you find any granulation with yours?

I'm curious if you've ever painted with PR102 winsor Newton's Light Red? I find it a beautiful transparent red oxide that's key in a combines fleshtone mix I came up with a few years ago (combined with raw sienna and Turner's yellow and adjusting for darkness with burnt umber)

Daniel Smith Burnt Sienna Light is a good replacement for Winsor Newton Burnt Sienna. It's a nice mix of PR 101 and PO 48. My question is what about people who hate phthalo's like me...any advice?

I use to hate Phthalos until I ran out of Ultramarine and was forced to use Phthalo Blue and reds, and that's when I started to love Phthalos because they are so good at mixing dark or blacks.

Many of the top brands have rather similar quality. Daniel Smith, Schmincke, M Graham, Sennelier, Winsor & Newton. For student brand, I suggest spending a few more dollars to get the 12 pan White Nights watercolor

I didn't like DS Burnt Sienna either - find it too reddish. I like their Transparent Brown Oxide instead. Relatedly, I've been trying to look for a replacement for Daler Rowney's light red, which is PR 101 and really nice, but after much trial and error in the DS range haven't found one that behaves similarly (I thought Pompeii Red might do, but nooo). Any suggestions?

Why? It’s watercolour. Transparent is good. Otherwise you can always get gouache.
