Can we acknowledge in the last video, the girl never even bought the basket she curated. A lot of influencers return items they buy, sell on the freebies they’re gifted and just like this video, never bought it it at all. She put her basket together in the shop itself, not at home. She definitely put those items back.
@susannahfriesenofficial2 күн бұрын

Exactly! Most of the items are freebies the influencers receive, and pretending to put them into a "gift basket" is an easy way to make an interesting AD. Why is it so few people realize that these are not reality, but curated, aesthetic ADS designed to make money for the influencers when viewers purchase the items?!

@@susannahfriesenofficialomg, you are so right. The worst ones are the short reels where influencers are using like 10 products to take a bath, or restock a drawer full of snacks and candy, clicking their nails on products no one needs. And if you point out the overconsumption, you are asked “why are you even here?” Some people are really impressed by these videos, and express how much they wish they had the influencer’s life. Some will make coffee drinks with so many sugar items added to the glass that they would be sickening to consume.

But I def have trouble with equating giving a good gift with showing that I love someone more…last year I gave good gifts that put me in debt. This year I only got things in my budget but I carefully chose something for everyone🤗
@susannahfriesenofficial3 күн бұрын
That’s amazing! We all can get caught up in these things but something I think about when i’m purchasing something is “how long did I spend working to afford this?”. I had to buy some more deodorant today and a candle for my MIL that she liked, and it cost me $50, and that is with my discount because I got it at the store I work at, and I literally said to my coworker “welp, that’s 5 hours of my life gone”. It definitely helps esp in situations when we are spending money on things we may not really need.

The gift-giving debt is so real. I lost relationships because I wasn’t willing to go into debt for gifts that I thought could be shown with a genuine connection instead of gifts that were best-guess (often-misses) items that I thought they’d like that I *could* afford. (Suffice to say those misses were insufficient in both accuracy and value.) Now I’m back in the pattern of going into debt out of fear for my remaining relationships and it is hell. I feel like normalized hyper-consumerism is holding my relationships hostage, except it’s the people in my life who are allowing it to hold our relationship in the balance of ‘tit-for-tat spending.’ When someone says “gift-giving is my love language” now, I take a much harder look at that; often it seems to come from a place that they view themselves as “not enough” otherwise/on their own, but there can be growing resentment if others don’t “meet them” at their own gift-giving level. (Because in that mindset it’s an unconscious “I spent X to prove my worth to you and you can’t even be bothered to prove my worth back to me by spending a similar amount of time/effort/money.”) Not saying that’s everyone, but it appears to be a pattern in my life of those who identify as people-pleasing, gift-giving-is-my-love-language folks; for anyone who identifies as those things, it could be a good incentive to examine where those patterns originated and why. Do you view yourself as “enough” in your relationships without gifts? I hope you do!)

@@susannahfriesenofficial It’s a relief to realise I’m not the only one who views those manhours similarly with regards to unnecessary gifts. The number of workday lunches I skipped out on because it would cost, at minimum, half an hour to an hour of the shift for a (very small, unsatisfying) tuna sandwich on regular bread from the grocery store… And the expectation that a box of hand lotions for someone who may or may not care for them, regift them, etc., is what you’re trading multiple meals for…

Affordable would be under $25/each and could easily be done using stores like Daiso, 5 below, dollar stores, or choosing less pricey options at Target and Ulta. On top of that, if you're already exchanging Christmas presents, why would you also give a Christmas/winter themed gift basket right before actual gifts? At least the boo basket was farther away from christmas gift-giving season; it could also be a good alternative to trick or treating for those who have recently aged out or if you're SO's favorite holiday happens to be halloween.

My nitpick on the “burr basket” is that it’s not even spelled correctly. it’s probably referring to the sound you make when you’re cold, which traditionally has been “brrrrr”. I don’t know why the price was so high there wasn’t much in the basket and the fruit didn’t look all that fresh either. Gift baskets look nice, but it’s a lot cheaper just buying a basket from the dollar store or something and making your own gift basket yourself.

Simple coffee/hot chocolate with flower with maybe homemade muffins/cookies in a cup holder is so much cheaper and you’re spending time with them. Time is my love language maybe that’s why I like that idea better. Time is more valuable and cost no $$

Baskets go back WAY before 2010. I'm 48, and people were giving these kinds of baskets since I was a kid. This is nothing new. How much they cost is all dependent in you. I just get baskets at thrift stores, fill them mostly with things from Target or Walmart thatvI know people will enjoy, and maybe one nice item that isn't expensive.

These are cute but definitely need to be more personal. I personally prefer personal gifts and hand made gifts. Actually watching this as I'm making plushies for Christmas for my family. Handmade personalized gifts can mean the world to someone I remember one year I gave my cousin a box I wood burned a character from one of his favorite shows. Usually you don't get much of a reaction from him but boy did his face light up that year. That's what gift giving is a about making that person feel loved and seen. A basket can be cute but it depends on the situation. I remember after surgery Wich was around Easter my mom and brother came in with a basket full of stuff for me. They were unaware of the trend and filled it with stuff id actually use like mechanical pencils, note pads and some snacks I like. A gift dose not have to be fancy it just has to be thoughtful.

Never heard of the term. But Dollar Tree gift baskets are much more doable for those who want to do it. Even then they can be pricy depending on how much stuff goes in.

Thats so consumerism! First christmas with my boyfriend i offered a basket with a sweater, a homemade cherry jam and 3 belgian beers he wasnt able to find since he moved in Canada.

I understand that some people can afford doing that and honestly we shouldn’t judge I can’t afford it for sure but if other people can that’s good for them if they want to do something nice they should without being judged or brought down it’s our responsibility to understand our financial state although those baskets look amazing. I would not be persuaded to make the baskets because I know I couldn’t afford them.

I think you have a good point, but when people start shoving it in our faces and saying things like “if you really love her, make her this”, it sends a very wrong message

That’s totally fine! I just don’t think this should be an expected or normalized level of spending for the average person. It’s mostly these restock influencers that bother me because they are only doing it for profit for the most part.

@deltaniris6898Күн бұрын
The idea of these baskets is so weird 😂 Honestly, I get something like that from my employer for Christmas - some food and sweets, tea, a candle and a random thing like jigsaw puzzles in a box. And sure, unboxing is fun, but it's not personal and you know this gift wasn't prepared for you specifically. These propositions from tik-tok look like someone really want to recreate a corpo environment at house 😂

A lot of the videos I've seen indicate a Brrr... basket in addition to Christmas gifts. Like Brrr...basket in November, early December and then still Christmas gifts in late December.

Why do people keep gifting Stanley cups? Don’t people already have a couple each already? Brrr baskets would be nice for nursing home residents.

I'd say my main issue with these besides the overconsumption is how generic they are they all have a lot of the same elements like the Stanley, slippers (often hugs, mugs... it doesn't seem like a personalized gift not once do a lot of these mention the person receiving the gift and what they actually want or like seems like these are just to show off trendy stuff.
@deborahmurray650023 сағат бұрын
I am against overconsumption as well but you know what I am for? Getting things correct! You are the second KZbinr I have seen that calls these things a Burr Basket. A Burr is a rough or prickly coating on a seed for protection or a rough area on a piece of metal where it has been drilled. These inane things are called “Brrr Baskets” filled with cozy items that are meant to create warmth during cold months. I do not even care if you talk about them…JUST AT LEAST HAVE THE INTELLIGENCE TO GET IT RIGHT!
@susannahfriesenofficial23 сағат бұрын
If you see them on Tiktok, they are called Burr Baskets. Maybe instead of commenting some rude comment questioning creators intelligence who do a lot of research before creating videos, maybe you should have the intelligence to get it right yourself. Have a nice day😉

The importance of Christmas is the birth of our savior Jesus Christ and the beautiful moments that we spend with our family, loved ones. I think that we don't need gifts in Christmas. Since many years, in our family, we don't receive anymore gifts, because in December, first of all, there are many birthdays like mine (in 2nd December, I'm 21 years old now :)), my sister birthday (in 9th December) and my brother birthday (in 17th December). And, to finish, there is New Year's day, that is a big party to us more that Christmas, who is more a calm and chill day for us. After, each person do as they want, but I hate these non-senses in these beautiful parties like Christmas or Easter, who erase their meaning.
@susannahfriesenofficial3 күн бұрын
That makes sense! That’s a lot of birthdays!! My papas birthday is Christmas Eve, so we’d spend that day celebrating him.

The captions on the second clip: "Tag the Bestie who always says she's broke when you ask for a burr basket" ASK? ASK??? What is going on? Who over the age of 14 asks for a present - and a pricey one at that??? Also: 63 Dollars is "affordable"? What's going on? When I gift something over 30 Euros to a friend, it's not a bunch of useless crap but something they actually need or want.

On Christmas you are suppose to give something to the people you value but it's supposed to be a gift that is something you think they would like, It's not the value of the people in your life anymore it's the value of the gift you are giving them.

im soooooo sick of the more expensive = better gift philosophy that some people have. if i received one of these i wouldn't even like 90% of the presents in them. whenever i feel like i want to give people gifts especially for an occasion like christmas where it isn't about that one individual but everyone gets presents i try to make baked goods that they will like. some of the stuff that usually goes in them like chocolates or wine i can understand because those are things you can eat or drink. but like... stanley cups? blankets? expensive cosmetics? all perfectly good individual gifts that the person you're gifting them to might not even have any use for! maybe the person you're giving a basket with a stanley to already has a water bottle. maybe they don't need more of things they already have. gifts should be thoughtful and personalized. and these baskets just aren't. they're as general as possible because the influencers making these videos need to get as many views as possible so they can sell more stuff from their amazon storefront. even the baskets themselves. like, yeah it's a really cute way to gift someone something. but do they even have any use for a basket? this is just conspicuous consumerism.
@susannahfriesenofficialКүн бұрын
@@ishathakor YASSSS, preach it! This is exactly what bothers me! I have one stanley that I got as a gift and honestly it’s not that great. It leaks, grows mold SO fast even if there’s just water in it, and if you do have one, you do not need more than that. but yes you are so right about the influencers! that’s what i’m saying!

Most of the items are freebies the influencers receive, and pretending to put them into a "gift basket" is an easy way to make an interesting AD. Why is it so few people realize that these are not reality, but curated, aesthetic ADS designed to make money for the influencers when viewers purchase the items?!

This also pretends it can be cheap but when you say “ if your man loves you he will get you a brr basket” then the contents do become very relevant. If Sarah’s man gets a brr basket with boots and jewelry then Jessica’s man gets her a candle and hot chocolate, it’s going to get compared.
