Being a citizen of an actual desert country, and England being one of the wettest places on earth, I find this very disturbing, you are not experiencing drought, but overpopulation!
@RE-ng5uw

Overpopulation, lack of repairs to leaking water infrastructure and under investment in increasing water supply by water companies. Had water companies used the standing charge money it collects for what it was intended for instead of handing it out in increased bonuses to shareholders non of this would be happening . But that is the nature of business in the UK. Cream off the profits and deal with the repercussions later

Dominique Samuels pointed out there has been no new reservoirs built in this country for around 30 years, so with the massive water loss through pipe leaks and the post 1997 population explosion, I don't think this drought can just be put down to climate change.

@Peter Holden I wouldn't disagree with that.

I have an awful feeling that this and some other 'events' that are happening at the momemt, are actually being 'managed".

Ah,,,,,, and a drought has never ever happened before in human history????? Perhaps if the reservoirs and pipes were 'managed' better we wouldn't have a drought?????

HE DID NOT MENTION THE WATER LEAKS THESE PRIVATE COMPANIES DO NOT REPAIR . OR ANY MONEY GOING BACK TO THE PEOPLE THAT THEY ARE CHARGING MONEY , - THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT GET FREE WATER AND EVERYTHING ARE THE ONES WHO HAVE BROKE INTO THIS COUNTRY AND HAVE NEVER PAYED A PENNY .

This is not new, we had this back in the 70s, so don't go blaming global warming. Other planets are now warmer too, and there are no cars on Saturn or Pluto.

Dont worry everything will be fine, soon as the gas an elecy companies have emptied our bank accounts nobody will be able to afford to use a car, and we, ll all rely on goverment hand outs. Full control...

Why don't they make the reservoirs bigger in the first place, despite all the extra houses being built they don't bother...also we're an island surrounded by water, are you telling me they can't filter that and make it safe 🤔

I remember scenes like this and hosepipe bans being a feature of summer. I'm not just talking about 76, it happened all the way into the early 90s. Perhaps I stopped paying attention then, or maybe it rained a lot or more people went away so ghere was less demand. Remember 2012 when it dained for like, 3 months and they were moaning about that, too

The Reservoir is managed by South West Water, really?, it doesn’t look very managed to me in fact it looks a bit empty. Nice management South West Water - carry on as you were.

Yes and why is it so low. Its not evaporation, its because they are drawing too much water from it. Because they haven't built any major reservoirs in decades so it's overloaded. This leads to water restrictions and an increase in fires as people are prohibited from watering gardens etc.

Typical alarmist rubbish from a presenter with zero technical knowledge, or journalistic enquiry. Just one example - nuclear power stations suffering lack of river water for cooling; no UK nuclear station takes cooling water from rivers, they are all coastal sites using seawater.

It is summer, reservoirs are always low in August. This is just more scare mongering. 10,000,000 more people in the UK since the last reservoir was built. I wonder why we are getting short of water. BTW I can confirm solar panels love the sun but hate the heat. Mine on my boat are running as low as 40% less than would be expected on a sunny cooler day in summer.

In the 1960s the lido near where we lived never had problems for the swimmers nor the water skiers. Then in 1980s noticed a huge drop in it so swimming & water activities were banned. Eventually they realised that the cement / concrete - or whatever it had been lined with - was leaking / cracking up, so although "mended" the water activities never resumed and occasionally the lido floods onto the areas around it. It was used in Cliff Richards film The Young Ones of 1961

We have reservoirs to store water and maintain supply during periods of low rainfall. To little rain causes some usage restrictions and to much rain causes flooding.

People are preserving resources. My guess is reservoirs have suffered a lot of evaporation due to low humidity. Borehole water levels are lower than average, but only a bit. That's why there's no hosepipe ban in my part of Kent.

The problem is overpopulation and incompetent handling of water, the UK isn't in the middle east you know.

Well it's going to rain next week so what's the panic for. They'll be reporting on floods in a few weeks when autumn comes
@steveb951

There may be flash floods next week. The ground is so dry it won’t absorb the rain so will flow straight off just like concrete. There will likely be floods in the Winter as there have been for the past few years due to climate change. You may have noticed they have got a lot worse in recent years. I’m not trolling this time just giving you the basics as you seem fairly unable to grasp them yourself.

@@steveb951 Well, I live on a flood plain right next to a river. I can assure you over the last 60 years the level and amount of floods we get has not changed. We get them every year - it's part of our life and we residents are use to them. We get swans and ducks floating along in our gardens, the view from the window is like looking out to sea there is water as far as the eye can see, it's actually quite beautiful. This happens every year several times during the wet months. We do have substantial protections in place to protect property and vehicle access so we don't need to evacuate. I can't speak for other areas as I don't live there but our flood pattern has not changed over 6 decades. I do agree that the hard ground isn't going to soak up the coming rain easily ( assuming there will be a lot) but that will only last a short time before it softens up. If previous weather prediction is anything to go by there probably won't be much rain fall only a few light showers though. The met office have never managed higher than 46% accuracy since it first started up

@@RE-ng5uw many parts of the country have over the past decade seen winter floods on a scale never seen before. It’s getting worse year on year, where do you live that’s a avoided this? It could simply be large sums of money have been spent on flood defences to protect the area you live on, others haven’t been as fortunate and I’m sorry but if you do live on a flood plain you are destined for problems.
@RE-ng5uw

@@steveb951 We pay for flood defences ourselves. Local authorities and government don't pay for anything because it's always been a flood plain being next to the river. The people that live here are from local families going back generations. They know it's a flood plain. We chose to live here knowing that. It''s a beautiful place so it's worth a few days of floods. But the level has never changed and being next to a river we are always conscious of the water table. We know when floods are due before the environment agency. There is a 6- 7 year cycle where every 6th year is dryer and the next year it's wetter Then for the other 5 years it's stable and it has been like that for over 60 years that i have lived here. Every one here is aware of the cycles of weather It's a way of life to us so we are very conscious of weather changes and water tables
