Burt Dam Salmon And Trout

POV Burt Dam action. Lot of characters fishing at ol' Burt Dam. The best part is when people head back to the parking lot with stringers of salmon, dragging them on the ground like they're taking a deer out of the woods. My friend and I were trying to fish Erie tributaries on this trip but the water was simply too high. Burt was pretty much the only option!

Here in New York. When you salmon fish your only suppose to use a size 4 hook. Unless it’s a fly. And the law is you have to keep your line out. Cant be reeling it in and out. That’s a ticket no matter where your fish around burt

I went last year and it was a circus. I was there all day and hooked one 25” male brown on a full nightcrawler of all things but between people casting over you, walking through pods of fish in the hole you’re fishing and just all around terrible sportsmenship I probably won’t be back.

Its the same here in WI. People are nuts for their spots. Once you're hooked you supposed to scream "fish on." People put their lines back in the water less than 2 min. Its a warzone out there for these fish.

I used to fish burt dam for salmon when I was young with my grandfather when snagging was a thing. I was so young the salmon would damn near drag me across the ground.

When you get away from Burt, the anglers are a bit nicer. Burt is a clown show with the same people fishing there every day, catching the same fish over and over.

I've fished other great lakes tributaries a good bit and yes it's definitely not as much of a cluster when you're not near a dam. Unfortunately we had a lot of rain prior to our trip and Burt was kind of the only option. And yes we did try fishing for steelhead in the chocolate milk colored tribs before stooping to this level lol

I’m going here soon, what size rod and reel do you recommend using? Also what kind of line?

I was using a medium action 7' spinning rod with 10lb braid to 12lb leader. If you're fishing for steelhead and browns you can go lighter than that, for salmon I would say that is the minimum. Most people use very long rods for steelhead and salmon but that is mostly to keep your line off the water during a drift. I think a lot of people somehow think a bigger rod has more power because I get a lot of crap for using stuff in the 7' range. I see a lot of people put WAY too much heat on salmon and steelhead whenever I fish for them. 6-12lb leaders and small hooks can only be pushed so far regardless of your setup. Good luck!

They need to fence the spillway out a few hundred feet and move the clown show out to the moving water where the fish have an opportunity to feed and hopefully move downstream. This is why I don't do this type of fishing.

That ship sailed long ago. I rarely post a location unless it is something vague, a very large geographic area, or a spot that is so scorched that it can no longer be burned

Jacob, these areas need to be shut without public access. He did nothing wrong in fact I give him credit for telling the area and truth that comes with it. You can tell he’s an honest person. This place is not a fishing hole. Its a trap for beautiful browns, steelies and salmon that get snagged over and over and over by locals and outsiders claiming to be fishermen. Downstream may be a different story but at the dam it’s just sad.

LMAO. What are you talking about? That gong show of a river is so wildly known it’s ridiculous. It’s also one of the most polluted places flowing into Lake Ontario. Let people flood to and and fish it all they want. It creates revenue to the local area and it’s a stocked fishery.

@@davidbarclay4968 yeah it would be wonderful if it were just Burt, however that’s not the case. You go to the most remote spots on Erie tribs/ Ontario tribs and it’s plagued with people coming from all over that walk up and low hole you and when you go to land a fish they immediately move in on your spot. It’s ridiculous and even worse they have no clue how to actually catch these fish and are often unprepared. They’re like locusts, come in tear it up keep whatever they catch and bounce.
