Burt Lancaster went from street-wise tough to art-collector liberal-activist, from circus-acrobat hunk to Academy Award winner.
Born November 2, 1913, Burton Stephen Lancaster, later “Burt Lancaster” was one of five children of a New York City postal worker. Burt recalled family life as warm and mutually supportive.
At the Union Settlement House, he and boyhood friend Nick Cravat formed an acrobatic team. By eighteen, Burt was 6’2″ and blessed with the athletic physique and dynamic good looks that helped make him famous. A basketball scholarship was not enough to keep him in NYU beyond his sophomore year.
That’s when he and the 5’2″ Cravat joined a circus, earning $3 weekly between them. A stint in the Army introduced Burt to acting and led him to Hollywood where his first release, The Killers (1946), propelled him to stardom at age 32. He took control of his own career and seldom faltered. He was married three times and had five children.
Upon his death in 1994, four-time Academy Award-nominated Burt Lancaster was acknowledged as one of the greatest stars in the Hollywood firmament. Lancaster’s films include Westerns, Costume Epics and serious Contemporary Dramas. There were the swashbucklers like The Crimson Pirate (1952), and also more risky roles, like the aging alcoholic in Come Back Little Sheba (1952).

I see Burt Lancaster as perhaps the greatest movie actor before Brando. He was a great natural talent who also worked hard at his parts. He played many diverse roles persuasively, seeming to be so in the character that he was the character. He played some roles with an almost scary intensity. He had amazing good looks which appealed to most women . He was loaded with masculine charisma. He was the total package.

Speaking now as a 52 old dude, I remember watching Run Silent Run Deep (I was about 24) and instantly knew a lot of those old 30s to 60s actors had the stuff. I love my Bruce Willis, Eastwood, Stathum, J. Chan, A. Hopkins, Arnold, etc. but every decade/generation had good stuff. As then and now, just like music, you got wade thru the junk to find the gems. Lancaster was a gem. Hats off to the Burt. Thank you bro.

Burt Lancaster was an icon in Hollywood. He had the looks and the brain to perform in movies. He was a brilliant actor who could play any role, and was a very handsome, macho, masculine man with a beautiful smile. God bless his soul always because men like Burt, it is hard to find. They don’t make them anymore which is sad, and Burt Lancaster was unique, talented, charismatic, versatile actor who is irreplaceable. Love the video, it is awesome 👏. Thank you for sharing it.

One of my favorite actors ever. Burt Lancaster not only pushed the envelope in every film project he did, he even licked the stamps before sending the envelope COD! He's hardcore like that, and became better and better as an actor and a person, challenging himself and his audience so that we can be better too in our own lives. He could do a tough guy action film like Scorpio, then do an episode on Sesame Street on the side, because he believed in children even while doing grownup stuff. He was one of a kind. And despite this being the year 2020, his kind is still out there. There is a little bit of old buddy Burt...in all of us, if we dig deep inside. RIP to a legend, and one of the most decent men ever to push the envelope of what's creatively possible.

He made you feel that with people like him in the world that things would always turn out right. If ever you got in a tight spot then Burt is the guy you would want with you, and if he wasn't there, then you could always try to do what you thought he might do. "The Leopard" is one of the greatest films of all time. Some of Burt's best roles are his film noir series. "The Swimmer" is one of my favorites, because it was such a fun short story by John Cheever, one of my favorite writers. No one expected it, but Burt pulled it off, to high acclaim, and it's still a classic a lot of people refer to. He's definitely one of my favorite actors. Every film described here, I've seen, and a lot thanks to KZbin and Amazon Prime. When I lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, there was a fantastic little theater - Plan B - that had a summer film noir series, and that's when I saw more of Burt - playing intriguing characters shrouded in mystery. He tackled every genre, from the ridiculous to the sublime. PS. This "Collection" series is a blast. Can't thank you enough for your contribution to our lives.

Even the most hardliner of American supremacists never considered John Wayne to be a superior artist, and nowhere in comparison to Burt Lancaster atleast. The guy was a star right from his debut in THE KILLERS, earned accolades from the Academy, the Berlin Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, founded America's most successful independent star driven production company(with Harold Hetch & Hill), overshadowed Katherine Hepburn in THE RAINMAKER and held his ground against his own idol Spencer Tracy in JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG, all within the first 20 years of his career. Unfortunately, his liberal beliefs at the height of the Cold War cost him deserved Oscar nominations in TRAPEZE, SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS and even VERA CRUZ(alongside his other idol Gary Cooper). But Lancaster was everything any cinematic legend would've desired and envied.

Burt had such a presence on screen, and along with all of the other great movies he made, he made some of the best Westerns ever in his later career, that he doesn't get the credit he deserves for how good they were..... Ulzana's Raid" "Lawman" "Valdez Is Coming" all made in 1971 and "The Scalp Hunters" in 1968.....And the Professionals was also a fantastic movie of Burt's, with an exceptional cast. I loved "Vera Cruz" and of course "Gunfight at the OK Corral".

Perhaps the most impressive guy I ever met, even in just a brief introduction. Not even Paul Newman or Frank Sinatra had such a powerful presence.

Speaking of Newman, I really liked Buffalo Bill and the Indians, also with Burt Lancaster. I realize the film didn't light up the sky, but it's so worth a viewing. It has been reassessed, over the years and has garnered much deserved appreciation. Not that, that matters, since I enjoy it regardless. It was directed by my favorite director, Robert Altman, and has two of my favorite actors, Paul and Burt. Also with Harvey Keitel, Geraldine Chaplin, Joel Gray... the western myth making of Buffalo Bill gets turned on it's ear, as only Altman can do. Not as great as McCabe and Mrs. Miller, but damned credible.

Celluloidwatcher - as william holden once said, lancaster or clift should've gotten the 'oscars' for 'from here to eternity' (as opposed to ensure, it could be inferred).

There were quite a few actors who should have gotten Oscars in From Here to Eternity, but Frank Sinatra's Oscar for Best Supporting Actor gave his singing career a rebirth, of sorts. Anyway, I agree that either Lancaster or Montgomery Clift could have gotten that gold statue, for sure. Of course, Donna Reed, as Alma, the prostitute, won for Best Supporting Actress. Deborah Kerr's officer's wife was a bit impressive, including that memorable beach side kiss with Lancaster. It was, probably, her sexiest role ever in her career.

Burt Landcaster was exceptional in the classic European circus movie "'Trapeze" with both Tony Curtis and my favorite Signora Gina Lollobrigida. In hard to duplicate scenes, Burt and Gina performed many of their own stunts on the trapeze and made the movie a classic gem. Gina is still alive and .. and doing well by all accounts... and will be 92 years old next July 4th.

Rubbish... There are still great actors around today.. MICHAEL CAINE... BEN KINGSLEY.. TOM COURTENAY.. IAN McKELLEN... ROBERT DE NIRO... ROBERT REDFORD... TOM CRUISE... JOHNNY DEPP.... CLINT EASTWOOD.. there are others and apologies for not mentioning any of the females who have tonnes of talent also... I always get pissed off by old people moaning about no good new music and no good actors/movies... It's a load of shit to be so asinine - there is fantastic NEW music around if you avoid listening to the crap on most radio stations - also, if you avoid the shite films that Hollywood foists on the bucket of popcorn / brain dead brigade, there are fabulous independent and foreign films available... Stop whining and expand your range.
