I lived most of my life on the run. From country to Country. Wasted decades behind bars. This song really hits home! My life has changed for the better, no more looking over my shoulders. I have an amazing wife and kids.

Glad you found love and happiness. I am 62 and got into the wrong crowd at 13 due to an abusive family upbringing. Drugs, booze, crime, fights. I finally broke free of the that and the law 32 years ago. But never found love or real happiness as never learnt how to love anyone. Single, no kids and really no friends as really unable to connect with anyone on any level. As a Criminal Psych once told me, I am highly intelligent but emotionally dysregulated. Still have major anger issues that affects me and people around me. I tend to just keep to myself to save all the dramas, even though I am unhappy being alone. Sory to lay that on you, but after reading your comment, I felt that we have a little bit in common. Cheers

I drank with Burton before he was hammered and was singing American Women all the people in the restaurant were clapping he even invited me and buddy back to his place but the owner of the establishment wouldn't allow it he said "with all due respect Mr Cummings is pretty intoxicated and we have to look out for his well being" none the less, was a memorable night!

man can I relate to this song. Coming out of years of living within a bottle and coming out of it alive,,,,,,this song was me. It could have ended badly, but God had different plans. Sober, Happy, and at peace. God is good, and Burton can really reach into peoples hearts with songs like this.

We're proud as Canadians to know that Cummings was generally considered to have one of the best voices in pop,rock music in the 60s and 70s. Great songs that never get old. Randy Bachman was pretty talented too.

I think my favourite trait about this particular artist is that he writes his own music. And he still continues to write to this day. We need more musicians with a gift like yours, Burt!
@JM-zk9ou Жыл бұрын
Check out The Bee Gees. They wrote all of their own songs over a 40+ year career that represented multiple genres. They also produced all of their music, including songs they wrote for other artists. They were vilified in the post-disco era. People wrongly assume they're a disco band, but most of their music is R&B, pop and country. When their music first hit the U.S. in the late 60s, people thought that they were The Beatles.
@rmoore16868 ай бұрын
@JM-zk9ou you’re right about the BeeGees. They were writing and singing songs before Disco was ever thought of.

In January 1994 in LA, we had the Northridge earthquake. My apartment was damaged so went to my sisters. Her neighbor was a musician, who was getting friends together at someones house who had a working TV/radio. At that house, who is there? Burton Cummings! We spent the afternoon singing karaoke. Burton sang "Brandy, you're a fine girl." As one of his songs, was a great version of course :)

In 1982, when I was but fledgling in Toronto's burgeoning TV/Film industry, I worked on a movie entitled 'Melanie'. Burton played a musician (really?). Paul Servino, Don Johnson and Glyins O'Connor were also present. There was a scene in an auditorium where Burton's character Rick performed a concert. It was staged at Ryerson University's grand hall. During re-sets (camera & lighting) Burton did not just sit around in a trailer and get pampered. No, he stayed on stage and played to the 200 + crowd of extras. He kept it up for 10 hours. A true talent, gentleman and a blessing to the Canadian music scene. I still hearken back whenever I hear his songs.

On this day in 1978 {September 2nd} Bruce Cummings performed "Break It To Them Gently" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'... Two months earlier on July 9th the song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #90, the following week it rose to #88, and then a week later it peaked at #85 for three weeks, which were also it's last three weeks on the Top 100... It reached #1 on the Canadian RPM Adult Contemporary Tracks chart... As a solo artist he had four other Top 100 records, "Stand Tall" {#10 in 1977}, "I'm Scared" {#61 in 1977}, "My Own Way To Rock" {#74 in 1977}, and "You Saved My Soul" [#37 in 1981}... And in his native Canada as a member of the Guess Who, between 1965 and 1976 the Guess Who had forty records on the RPM Singles chart, sixteen made the Top 10 with four* reaching #1, "Shakin' All Over" for 3 weeks in 1965, "Laughing" for 1 week in 1969, "No Time" for 2 weeks in 1970, and "American Woman/No Sugar Tonight" for 3 weeks in 1970... Burton Lorne Cummings will celebrate his 70th birthday this coming December 31st {2017}... * They just missed having a fifth #1 record when "Share the Land" peaked at #2 in 1970, plus they had three records peak at #3, "Tossin' and Turnin'" in 1965, "Hey Ho, What You Do To Me" in 1965, and "Rain Dance" in 1971...
