Burt Wolf CRUISING THE BALTIC (

Burt takes a look at the history of cruising and how it has changed and how much of it has remained the same during the past 200 years. The first luxury cruise ship was based in Italy and was only available to the rich and famous. It offered excellent food, gambling, magnificent parties and guided tours. Burt’s cruise starts in Portsmith, England and visits Belgium (Zeebrugge), Denmark (Copenhagen), Germany (Berlin), Russia (St. Petersburg), Estonia (Tallinn) and Sweden (Stockholm).

There was a time, I read, just a few decades ago, where it was thought that the general public wouldn't be interested in cruise ships anymore. It was then found to not be the case.

This was interesting, as ports on the Baltic are not usually covered much. Bragged looks like an interesting place in Belgium. I was not aware Berlin was on the Baltic, as I thought Hamburg was the big port on the north of Deutschland. The classic dining and such is alluring, butvtoday's ships appear more like a shopping mall on the ocean. Though more expensive, I think the smaller ships with 150-200 passengers are more appealing than several thousand and nonstop entertainment or plannrd activity. 8 would like to visit Extonia and St Petersburg. Stockholm is nice, but I have been there twice - once for Midsommer's night!. I wish you were still narrating cruises on the Danube, as I want to do that trip, and you would be host par excellence! I would settle for the Rhone or Douro as well. I did the Rhine, but I like the cities on or near the Danube better - with Prague and Budapest being high on my must see list. Europe's skylines are so interesting, so viewing from a river or sea is a great way to see them.
