I soaked my sweet corn seeds with a little hydrogen peroxide and water Thursday and planted them Friday afternoon. Monday morning a good bit were already popping out of the soil. Thanks for all the videos, you're helping a lot of home gardeners.

We got down into the 20s, for a few nights last week. I covered my potatoes with hay. Some still got bit back pretty good. I removed the mush and pulled the hay back . Today, they are looking great. They are several inches tall again. Zone 7b, north Mississippi. In the past, I have completely covered them with soil and they grew back just fine. Good luck and God bless you all!! :)

How lucky am I here in Western Australia (Perth)! We don’t get frosts or Arctic blasts, as we are right on the coast of the Indian Ocean. But we do get 40 + degree days, and that causes trouble at times in the Veggie Patch. But like you all we just battle through it. Great channel thanks for sharing your experience.

Back in November I had some potatoes that had sprouted and I buried them thinking they wouldn't emerge before Feb or March or they would just rot. Well they did come up and was about 6 inches tall when the polar blast came through in December. A good friend at church told me to cut the tops off and bury the whole thing, and I took his advice. We ate new potatoes in February just as I was planting for this year. This last freeze burned a lot of the leaves on my taters even with frost covers over them, but I think they will be okay as long as the stalks themselves didn't freeze.

Hey Travis, it’s supposed to be 35 here in California where I live haven’t seen that cold in March and I don’t know win we have had a rain storm after a rain storm after rain storm I planted my potatoes in between didn’t expect them to come up. I figured they were right. I seen today that it came up. Yay I’ve already planted my tomatoes half of them will plant other half at the end of the month my raised beds are made out of 2 x 8 so they’re almost like inground field half with dirt half a compost one of the roots to get into the main soil

Nice. Mine weren't up when it got to 20F here, two nights in a row. I still covered with a couple of layers of frost blanket to protect any shoots near the surface. I spied my first green shoot today. Average last frost date here still isn't for about three weeks, so... Fingers crossed and covers ready.

It went down in the 30s two nights last week (killed my cucumbers) then today it went up to 88F. Hail storms, cold spells then heat. It's a kaleidoscope of weather around here. Texas 8B

On your raised bed taters if you aren't expecting rain with the frost you might try going out at dark and putting your germination heat mat over the top of the plants then take it off it the morning. Heat mats generally only raise about 10F above ambient.

Good morning sir! A question about sweet corn spacing. I planted the seeds basically 6” apart. I have them on top of drip tape with 12” emitter spacing. So I planted one seed on top of each emitter and one in between. Do I need to thin these out to a 12” spacing? What is the optimal spacing? Thank you!! Robin in Bergheim, TX
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
No need to thin. Just make sure when you're watering, that you let the drip run long enough to cover the gaps.

Two questions: Some of my potato's stems are turning yellow and dying, do I wait until they are totally dead or can I harvest them now? Will the potatoes get larger if I wait? Other question: some of my garlic is laying over and the bottom 2 or 3 leaves are brown. Are they ready for harvest or will they be ok in the ground for a while longer? It seems like it's too early to harvest. I'm in central Florida. Thanks for your help.
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
According to Jim at Wood Prairie Farm, the potatoes will "size up" quite a bit as they plants start to die. But if you're expecting a ton of rain, you might want to go ahead and get them so they don't rot.

I don't know how well you faired during your cold spell, but our 29 degree prediction turned out to be 25 degrees. When it comes to protecting potatoes I hill them as high as I can, burying them if I can. I never uncover them, they spout back out in 4 or 5 days with a vengeance.
