I'd be putting the tomato in with one on the north side of the second leader. Then the other tomato on the south side of the 3rd leader. That way the cages and plants are a bit more offset but still have half the planter. (Assuming that the main line is running north to south)

For trellis I use lightweight t posts I push in the ground with my foot. When 5 foot is not enough I lengthen them with 1 inch sticks fastened with 2 short drywall screws in holes already provided on the posts. Bought some potatoes today and cut them up. A week of nice warm and dry weather the whole week here near Chicago. Oh, put in a short row of Oregon snap peas. God bless

I use cheap irrigation. It puts the moisture on its soil or it gets the hose again! I suppose it helps that I don't have a ton of irrigation to do. Less than 3000sf planted and all of it heavily mulched.

Lookin' good, Travis. I'm jealous of the beets. Not the beets themselves, but I looooove beet greens! All I can say for the beets is "pickled beets" are pretty great. The one year I grew a short row of (red) beets, it seemed like the home grown ones weren't earthy or dirty tasting like the ones at the store. Maybe just my imagination...

I’m not a a fan of getting my hands dirty working in the soil I call myself a hunter gatherer. Hunting in the retail stores, farmer’s markets, and gathering the best food that money can buy. I stock my pantry refrigerator and freezer with the foods that I gather . as a hunter gatherer, I have great hunting days periodically enough for one meal a day mostly two meals a day and for 48 hours weekly I don’t find anything that I want to eat . this spring I’m doing a change up.. I am going to be a farmer. Well, that’s an exaggeration. I do have some raised beds prepared and I’ve bought packets of seeds.. please wish me luck and thank you for helping me get prepared. Sincerely, your new subscriber Linda.

I was wondering if arugula and the milder Chinese greens from the mustard Family any biofumigation benefits or is it only the stronger hotter varieties? We like the milder fresh eating types but haven’t really developed a taste for southern mustard greens yet. I could see growing some in beds that I would maybe choose other non-edible cover crops though,especially if I start seeing any nematode issues.
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
Supposedly all the brassicas, even broccoli, can have some biofumigation benefits. The spicier the leaves, the better the biofumigation though.
@joeyl.rowland4153 Жыл бұрын
Biofumigation, from my research, is at its best when the brassica is very hot as in Mustard Caliente or Mustard Trifecta. It works because of the glucosinulates that are within the brassicas. That chemical is produced as a result of plant damage which is why they say to mow it then till it in and then water as it has to be hydrated. It also works better if you have available sulphur in your soil, so the addition of pelleted sulphur when you plant your mustard is a good concept, depending on your soil you must be careful with sulfur it will make your soil more acidic. Generally speaking those brassicas that make for a good biofumigant are not those brassicas that you would want to consume, Mustard Caliente is very hot and not palatable at all.

Will the decomposing spinach adversely affect the tomato plants growth in any way? Notice how I didn't spell tomato the way Dan Quayle would. lol

I don't think so. The decomposing mustard can inhibit seed germination. But we'll be transplanting both of these beds, so shouldn't be any problems.
