Traveling around Zambia can be very diverse. From good roads and high end buses, to poor roads and buses packed full with bags. It's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you get. Nakonde road is definitely one of the very poor and finished roads.

Good tip, never to cross the border at night especially if you're a first timer. Always good to be prepared or well aware of every new country you're getting into.

Hi @traveltomom so my partner and I are doing the 40 trip tomorrow, SA to Zambia, through Zimbabwe - any last minute advice for us? Any reason why you had to walk at night? Was a bit confused about that? Thanks again

That route is a nightmare from what Zambian traders who frequent the border town say 😂. But if you're gonna go South from Zambia to South Africa via Botswana, the ride is smooth.

This video is totally misleading. The author only posts videos of the portions of the road which are potholed and bad but he doesn't mention that those portions make up no more than 20 percent of the entire 1,000 km trip and that the rest of the road is properly paved and the busses do it at about 120 km/h ot higher (80 mph). The place he calles Mpika, Southern Zambia is over 600 km (400 mi) North of Lusaka the capital city and Lusaka is smack in the center of the country. It would do well to give a more complete narration of the road trip. We are not saying the roads are not good but then again, they are not as depicted Compare the roads in this video with the one in the link and believe it or not it's the same route kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZDPo2qYot2apsk

hahahaha traveling over land can be special, but quite often it is when you are at the destrination "i made it" just like doing sports, it isn't fun when you are doing it, but it is rewarding when you completed you're round.

lol! from the start when you said 12 hrs ... I thought 12 African hours is going to be a lot longer than that. Backpacking is a young persons game. "overlanding" = self drive (& NEVER driving at night) is a bit more civilised.
