I visited Zambia from the UK for a month when I was 17 and it was a life changing experience. I'm looking at a chalk painting right now framed on my wall that I bought from a guy on the street in Lusaka. White water rafting the Zambezi was incredible! The locals we interacted with were very warm and friendly. Countries like Kenya and Morocco are probably the most recognised tourist destinations in Africa but exploring Zambia was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

I visited Venezuela in 2008 when it was still relatively normal (but ultra-socialist). It was nothing like it is today. I don't think I'd ever go back, nor do I have any desire to see anything there apart from Angel Falls. Otherwise, Venezuela is as bad as they say. I'll leave it to the Drew Binsky's of the world to find good where not much exists - I'd rather just be honest.

Yes, Lusaka is overwhelmingly safe and secure. There are certain parts where I felt less safe carrying around my expensive video equipment (around people who were clearly drunk or on drugs) but Zambia is an incredibly safe place. And I echo your sentiment - I also feel less safe in the USA than in Zambia! 😂
@sabrinabubnis67654 жыл бұрын
That was awesome of you. Thanks! When your in the embassy community, your assigned a sponsor. A sponsor is a fellow american embassy family that shows the new family to post around. We take them to get groceries and give them the tour of their new post. Well we were on our way back from showing the new family the school. We took a turn down leopards hill road to head back towards kabulonga. We didnt realize the president was coming down the road. There were people lined up the whole way to town waiting to catch a glimpse of him. Being american, we were instructed by the marines at the embassy never to stop our car for police or citizens. Basically dont pull over. So my mom was being waved to the side of the road to pull over, but because of the protocall for Americans my mom kept going. They finally blockaides the road with their bodies and she had to pull over. It ended with the new american family in the car, my brothers and sister of age 8 and below, and myself being surrounded with 5 M16s and my mother a pistol to her head over the glass. Needless to say, I'd say a gathering is the president coming. Definitely pull over

Interesting fact about the freedom statue, it was modelled after a real person (forgot his name) who ACTUALLY broke the chains he was locked in. Im originally Zambian and in Zambia and African in general, addressing someone as white (muzungu) or black is not considered offensive as Africans are brought up to be comfortable in their own skin tone and surely this only is considered offensive here in the western world where one learns to know what colour skin they are due to prejudice and discrimination surrounding us.

There is a lot of hidden gems and places to go but you need people to direct you on places to visit and eat great local food. Next time take up some of the KZbinrs from there to show you around you will have a great time and never forget it.

That's good advice! I had to leave Lusaka in a hurry to catch the train to Dar es Salaam, and was quite jet-lagged, so I didn't explore as much as I should have! Next time 😎

How’s the food? Weather? Hotels? Culture? Things to do?
@DrifterDave2 жыл бұрын
I was only there for one day en route to the Tazara Railway, and was pretty jetlagged, so I didn't get to see much. This was my second visit to Lusaka, though, and I can say with confidence that you'll find great food, mild weather, thriving culture & tons of mega-malls to satisfy your urban hunger. Make sure to check out the Freedom Statue and the Zambia National Museum while you're in the area.

What are suggestions as a single female taking a taxi from the airport? Is it safe or should I get a hired service?
@DrifterDave2 жыл бұрын
I had no problems with the taxis in Lusaka. It’s a very safe city, and I doubt you’d have any issues at all. If you want to set the tone with the driver, take a photo of the car and number plate and send them to a friend before you enter the car - a female friend of mine swears by that in cities where Uber is not available. Safe travels 🙏

Yes, the only reason it’s included in the “East Africa Vlog” is because it was the launching point for the railway trip to East Africa. 28 of the 30 episodes in the series are actually in East Africa (my focus for this particular trip).

Seems like you were here on a public holiday. Only times Lusaka is that quiet lol. Maybe try an Airbnb in one of the neighbourhoods next time for a more "homey" feel to your visit 🙂

That could very well be! And I would 100% use private accommodation, but won't be supporting AirBNB. They burned millions of vloggers by pulling their affiliate program without warning, leaving us advertising their site, not realizing we weren't receiving any referral credit for those ads. Great product, but a horrible company.

That huge growth potential is NOT benefitting Zambians. Wake up, The CCP treats Zambians like dogs, and that is not an overstatement. Black Zambians are being descriminated against in their own country. This narrative is BS. Wake up, Zambia. Wake up.

Great video, many thanks for posting. I've previously been to Dakar in Senegal and Cape Town in South Africa. Next up is Namibia. Where were you mugged in South Africa? Parts of Johannesburg are highly dangerous.
@DrifterDave3 жыл бұрын
Namibia is incredible! I was mugged on Point Road in Durban, in broad daylight, right next to a KFC restaurant. There were about 50 onlookers who did nothing. I managed to fight the three young men (about age 21) off as they tried to pin me down to steal my wallet and camera. A few punches and kicks to the face sent them running. One was arrested. Thankfully, they didn't have any weapons and were high out of their minds when they attacked, so it could have been much worse. Crazy experience!

It was a very harrowing experience! I'm glad I made it out alive. South Africa could be so much more than it is, if they could only get their street crime under control. It's a shame.

Thanks for sharing mate :-) You seemed a little edgy for Lusaka. The city is extremely safe and Zambian people are often happy to stop and chat (the official language is English but people love it when you ask about their true languages). I understand how two very brief visits on your own may make you feel less safe than you really are.
@DrifterDave4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely - it's always more unnerving on the first day of any trip. I was violently mugged in South Africa a few years prior (though I fought them off - hah!) so I am naturally over-cautious now. But, I know Zambia is completely safe and friendly from past visits to the country. However, on this trip I was carrying $1,000 worth of camera equipment alone, in open view, so I know that can present a target for opportunistic thieves. Very happy that Zambia proved itself to be 100% safe, as I had expected it to be!

The official language will soon be Mandarin, if Zambians don't wake up. Many of the billboards in Zambia are written in a language most Zambians don't even speak. But, don't worry, Mandarin is now being taught in your schools, so that you can understand the instructions given to you as you work your way out of the debt trap you've been forced into. Zambians wake up, please.

As long as the town planners have no interest to change the face of Lusaka, then we are in trouble because we need people who are renovative and full of ideas and not to be content of what I call filthy structures which are occupying the spaces for nothing, let's organize our selves to do what people can appreciate and see that we are a country of vision.
@DrifterDave Жыл бұрын
I see a lot of potential in Lusaka. I think it deserves some new architecture to put the city on the world map. Right now, it's skyline is quite unimpressive, with the exception of the Hilton Garden Inn. Modernizing existing skyscrapers and building new ones would go a long way to promote further investment.
