I shortened my oil pan on my buggy Subaru conversion and ran it dry hill climbing at the dunes. Knock knock, who’s there? Rods! Mick have you ever toyed with the idea of a reverse sump to keep the oil in the back?

heat gun at the rtv interface works well.

After the shortened pan mod.. Is the clearance about the same as the stock vw engine or does the ej22 still hang lower? Great videos, very chill!

What happens with the oil capacity and the dip stick would you not get inaccurate readings? Or would the oil sit too close to the crank? I'm guessing there is a recess in the shortened sump for the oil to sit in?

Not a Subaru owner btw, just a guy with ground clearance issues 😪

Opinion on the cast aluminum pan from Smallcar?
@Busaru6 жыл бұрын
+Forthwith Tx Its okay... but no baffles so that sucks, and could get smashed if hit - rather than bend like steel. This is also why I like steel wheels. I wouldn't use it if taking off-road much. They have cooking guns and look cool though!

Mine has cooking guns. Which is even cooler. The same could be said for other stock aluminum pans (dent vs. crack). I like the fact that the SC pan holds a full 5 quarts. It is pretty stout, IMO.

+Forthwith Tx the only difference between stock pans is that they're usually a lot more protected than in a VW swap. No question that the aluminum pan is stout, I just do too much off-highway travel to even consider one for my personal bus. I wish they had baffles too.

Do you have any issues with breaking transmission mounts under load? I had a buddy do this type of swap, and whenever he gunned it he risked breaking a transmission mount. He's about to get a solid metal mount. Also are you running a crossmemeber by chance? If not, how do you feel about the engine being supported by just the transmission?
@Busaru6 жыл бұрын
+daniel Jimenez I haven't thought about that much. I am building a crossmember for bugs as we speak, it'll be supported by the frame horns. How many times did your buddy brake his trans mounts?

Busaru Thank you for the reply! That's awesome to hear you're building a cross- member! He's only broken the polyurethane mounts twice; granted he likes to launch, and has an ej207 on a stock transaxle.

+daniel Jimenez Oh man! I'm on rubber, which I think would have a little more give, and I only do rolls - never launch. I'm on a stock trans as well - hoping it'll take the abuse.

Busaru I think you'll be fine then, judging by your driving habits. It'd be cool to see you install a subarugears transmission and compare the difference. See if it's really worth it. Love what you do - keep up the good work. You've inspired me so much to have a sleeper bug one day.

+daniel Jimenez I installed a SG reversed trans in a bus - "Streetfighter" (search my other vids) and it was pretty awesome. I don't know if I'd personally ever spend the money but it was certainly one of the sweetest rides I've converted. Thanks for the chat - we all inspire, I'm just happy you found my stuff inspirational.
