Hey Scott just an FYI if you release the interlock lever between the brake pedals it would allow you to brake steer the tractor. Farmers use that to turn tighter corners. Practice it when it suits just to get the feel of it.

If the engine ran 6000 RPM without damage, why is the governor not set higher for more power? Plus I guess that is a design error allowing shaft wear to drive the fuel pump but not the governor, plus allowing the engine shutoff to depend on air pressure, which I would look into changing the latter, I guess to electric, requiring voltage to keep it running.

Kudos to the tow dudes. Really appreciate the amount of care they show - so much better than the usual "good enough" attitude I seem to come across these days. I sure can't afford a bus, but if I ever came across one by the side of the road and in a pickle...I'd probably suggest these guys. And that they then take the bus to you, Scott - obvs. 😁

Need to let the air out of those back tires. The sidewalls actually should be flexing just a bit, they don't get hot because you are moving so slowly. But if you do that, you will be amazed at how much more traction you get. Beautiful bus, I would pay the towing to get you to work on it as well.

I know SO MANY people who would be spinning tires and shooting gravel everywhere trying to get up that hill. Low and slow - Keeping your tires gripping is the ONLY way to go! Well it worked well on this more vintage style bus but a lot of buses would be too tall you get over 14 ft you run into trouble quick the newer buses are still going to require a RGN & even though a bus isn't over weight or width it's still considered a specialized load most owners are less motivated to hire the guys with the real nice equipment because of the money

A lot of farmers like to put liquid in the wheels to add weight. They usu prefer beet juice since its non corrosive and doesn't ruin the rims. Just an idea if you haven't already considered it. Seems like plenty of power, just not getting it connected to the ground.

What you need to pull buses up that hill is a dozer. A small dozer like a D-4 wouldn’t have the traction problems your tractor did. Your tractor has plenty of power, but low on adhesion. A crawler would also be easier on your driveway. FYI, GE locomotives are well know for turbocharger fires. Railroad crews refer to them as “toasters”.

I'm no tractor expert...but it looks like the tow cable attaches to the tractor above the rear axle. This tends to make the tractor front end get lighter as the tension on the tow cable increases. If the tow cable were to attach to the tractor below the rear axle, increased tension in the tow cable only helps to force the front end of the tractor down. Years ago I was trying to pull a heavy load with my two-cylinder, two-wheel drive, diesel Yanmar and hooking the tow cable below the axle made all the difference.
@BusGreaseMonkey

Without if draped over the box to add weight to the rear tractor tires for traction, the tractor had zero traction to pull the bus. The wheels just hopped and never could gain traction

in the 1970's we had one of these Flixables in the small Charter fleet I drove for. We called it the Jetson Bus after the old Jetson's TV show because of those 3 fins across the rear window Lol! Bus was assigned to the Intrastate Line run and had a 6V-71 in it and ran OK, but had horrible brakes on it that the shop just could not fix. After it was involved in 3 rear-end wrecks with 3 different drivers the drivers just refused to drive it and it ended up parked out back of the shop as a spare parts supply - but not many parts fit on the fleet of used GM 4905's and MC-7's other than the engine.
