Very interesting. I have a number of bushcraft, hunting knives. Casstrom No 10 SFK 14C28n, new one...it's very good. A custom, Stuart Mitchell, small hunter in SF100 and two Pumas White Hunter and a folder. The last two are boxed, never been used. This knife looks very interesting, I like the sheath set up. I'll check out the UK price

Looks like a great little knife! I’ve seen some folks complaining on the price points here. The sheath system looks like it adds quite a bit of value to the knife not to mention the high quality steel ER uses as well. It does make me wonder how it would compare against say the ESEE 4 knife. Great video as usual!

Hi mate. Yes I take note of these comments too. I don't like to compare apples with oranges (even though they are of course both knives). The ESEE 4 is a great knife but I would love to see them make it in a stainless and it would be in my house in a jiffy! But when I still have my similar sized Strider from ways back in ATS-34, I wouldn't move back to a 1095 carbon blade that size anymore. Maybe if I was younger and wanted to be continually maintaining the blade (because I used to love fiddling, oiling, polishing etc. LOL) to prevent rusting (from my kinds of usage), it might be ok. As regards to the sheath, you know as well as I do for sure how many manufacturer's fall down with their sheaths. I worked in the corporate world for 2 big US companies and one way to increase the profit margin is by skimping in other areas not the focus of the customer. Even my old Puma, when it was not so old and used lots during hunting trips, the leather sheath let me down (not the knife-we all know PUMA make good knives but the sheaths sucked to put it bluntly- It had been restitched twice, and in the end I glued it together with urethane cement!). Here we see a well thought out carry system and this does in MHO add value. Today many of us seem to forget about what the super steel knife we have just invested in actually goes into and whether it will be in one piece when it gets wet, we stumble upon it out hunting etc etc.

@@BushCampingTools I know what you are dealing with Francis & I always direct folks to take a look at materials & sheath systems before they lose their minds about price. I get the same type of heat with HalfBreed Blades & they have premium materials & sheath systems. Funny about the ESEE stuff they are actually making more models in higher end stainless steels now - not sure about the model 4 but definitely some others. The same is going on with TOPS knives too. The 1095 is great but if that blade isnt coated or treated properly they will rust like nobodies business you are correct about that. Thanks for your thoughts on this!

@@MrLeonidas0001 For instance if one buys a quality fire steel, say a "light my fire brand" it will cost about 45 bucks (it's actually smaller than the included ER one) then add to that a ceramic sharpening stone (my much much thinner Falkniven (about 2mm thick if that glued quite poorly to a coarser silicon carbide? stone cost me 40 bucks (I even got a discount as I know a guy who runs a gun shop) add some shipping costs of say 15 bucks in total- not unreasonable depending upon where one is, that's almost another 100 bucks onto the cost of the knife. In this case the real test LOL was not whether I thought the knife was any good, that I was sure of to be honest but whether ER had simply bundled crappy accessories with the knife, which add ZERO value. That's the main reason why I started the video and in actual fact started the shooting, with the fire steel. We did it in one take as the thing threw sparks with such a light scrape, it beat my dad's 40 year old Swedish fire steel LOL with ease! I've got literally dozens of fire steels that came bundled with knives, all of them C R A P, except this one and the my dad's LOL. I also took the ceramic plate that came with the Sethlans and used it to sharpened some particularly difficult steels I have here to test it out too (Ok couldn't show this on the video as they were different knives LOL!) Now I have no idea where they sourced the steel and diamond plate and ceramic plate from but certainly they work very well and under a hand lens the diamonds appear to be well-bonded to the plate because in the past they were including some very coarse diamond self adhesive tape, ok in a pinch but not good for a fine edge.

@@daveandmerlin D2, since it was introduced all those years back from the tooling/milling trade into knife blades, has a been popular steel for amateur and professional knife makers the world over. Specifically because of it being able to be air hardened and no technically demanding tempering processes required. thats not to say that one can not apply a highly scientific approach to heat treatment with this tool steel alloy. It is being made popular amongst the throng of all of the newish PM steels and other Stainless steel tool steel alloys by both marketing (some truth, some BS) and factual accounts of its general performance. D2 and it's "relatives" eg K340 etc are great steels if corrosion resistance is not an issue and are not impossible to put an edge on (in the field) if below 60 HRC. The raw stock can be cheap, (but may not be) dependent upon the source and quality, just like any alloy and easily LASER cut too.

A great review as all the reviews, this knife is so beautiful and my question is, what is a deference from a tactical/combat knife? Thanks a lot bro!!!
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 2 жыл бұрын
Well I personally think a combat knife is something with double edges, a multi purpose could be anything. Any of these could be tactical but for them to be tactical they have to have a 'tactical advantage' over a similar design. That tactical design might be how it is carried and have nothing to do with the actual knife itself. I think a combat knife has to be able to be good at penetration first time. For that to be the case it must have a defined point and not a curved drop point as in the Sethlans, however, the Sethlans is tactical because of the advantages of how it is grouped together with stone, steel and some redundancy of being able to cord wrap the handle in the event of handle failure. This is what makes the Fulcrum both tactical (the sheath carry system) and the strong point for penetration (in case), hence too the design is used for bayonets s well. (if we are just talking about ER knives for the moment.) A combat knife must be strong in all directions and possess a guard (I believe). Can a combat knife which is tactical (by very nature) also be a "survival knife", well it depends and i'll talk about this very soon i hope.

@@BushCampingTools I really appreciate your time and your words. You are right for the double edge on a combat knife, and we see it in any bayonet and in many old combat knives. Also, you are absolutely right that a tactical knife must have the characteristics for survival situation and I think that a knife with survival skills don't have double edges. Any way, I will be waiting for your new videos and especially for the video where you refer, where it is very interesting and important. Hi there. I think you could strip the scabbard down to just the kydex sheath and nothing else by removing the malice clip and the nylon pouch, could then possibly carry inside a deep jacket pocket etc. Certainly this knife can indeed be used for hunting up to medium sized game I would be happy with this. Maybe for bigger animals than say wild goats, eg deer or elk a bigger blade but then again u could still use such a blade if one also carried a bone saw. Depends upon how far one was from a vehicle at the time of bagging the game.

A bit expensive, but they make a good knife. The blade shape reminded me some of my Peko (TFK) also in N690, which seems to be the big European steel used in blade steel from Spain to Italian knives. What is your opinion of the N690 as a steel from your experience in the field? Granted, heat treatment, etc will vary. It looks like a quite wide blade and useful in many situations outdoor, as you demonstrated. I like your field tests with a variety of uses. But you got to tell one thing you don't like from now on about each knife. LOL.

Hi there and thanks for watching and commenting! Ok for sure, I'll point out some annoying thing or something i think could have been done differently. Give me some more time with this one but I will say for now and it's probably petty but the small pouch with the sharpening stone could have been made slightly bigger, it's a very tight fit for this stone and unless one puts a small piece of plastic inside of it, the diamond will either wear the nylon or the cut into the back of the press stud (I talk about this in my blog and show my work around). I guess they figured one would not be pulling the stone in and out all the time. As to any annoyances regarding the actual knife, they say one can cord wrap the handle, personally I wouldn't bother as the handle as it comes is more than secure and comfortable enough in ungloved hands. Although that being said cord wrapped, it will provide some cushioning (but for such a small knife which would not be used to hack down tress, may not be worth it? One thing I didn't talk about was the heftiness of the pommel for striking whatever. Maybe i will make some more videos later and talk about this design aspect.

Hi there, u can never ask me enough questions like everyone else here; I'll try and answer them. Ah, someone else asked me this question some time ago. LOL, I just read ur question out aloud and my son said the following: "for you (meaning me of course") it would probably be that one in the cardboard box under the coffee table"! I said: "What cardboard box?" he said: "That rusted up piece of junk!" LOL he meant my trusty Ontario Spec plus! LOL. That's probably seen the most adventures but it had a good start on all the stuff you see here. OK maybe that might be one (BTW, it's not "rusted up" as he said LOL, he means Patina LOL!). There are another two which come to mind, both have much longer histories than any on this channel and I have mentioned both here in the past. But I'll have a better think about mainly the stuff here. It's not an answer but one which gets a lot of use for all sorts of stuff (but never abused eg like using it as a lever etc.) is a Kizlylar Supreme Savage believe it (maybe or not). Trouble is I travel a lot and use diff knives in different countries environments and I'm trying to think of like just a main favourite. I'll have a good think here but if my missus reads this she'll use it to make me chuck everything else out in the scrap metal bin LOL!

@@BushCampingTools Interesting choice, especially after all you mentioned about small and large knives! I was not even aware about this model from Kizlar but I was surprised about how much similarities it has with the latest ER knife (LOL !!!). Beside the joke - it is a nice knife. But it is really what you would choose as your one and only knife? If yes - my respect! Because it would show that a clean and simple design (or call it „old style“ ) would still be successfull in a comparison with modern, high tech knives. It is also interesting to see that a lot of knife experts are choosing high quality, but simple knives as their favourite models. So - why do we have to spend so much money and time into designs that will never will be the „real ones“ ? Is it just for fun or is it something we do just to have something to do? When I look to my collection of knives I can find a lot I have never really used as they should have been. And they would all deserve it because they are all made with a lot if passion and high craftsmanship. But I always use my favourite models. What a waste. Sometimes I think I have to sell them all and to buy a simple finnish small Leuku with a YP Taonta blade and a customised handle, combined with a solid axe and a saw - that‘s it! Spnding more time in nature instead of watching videos about knives on YT. But let‘s see. As long we enjoy what we do we can still have the feeling that the time is not wasted.

@@diderichlangmannen My other passion was mountain bikes, specifically free ride stuff.I only had one and it followed me around the globe on and off mountains, I became fanatical about it and buying trick parts etc etc until all that was left of the original bike was the frame. When u do this sort of thing one soon realises that we are indeed reinventing the wheel constantly and knife manufacturer is no excluded here. The more complicated a bike the more things to go wrong, the more things to service, the more things that in a lot of cases mean nothing outside of the bike show room. I think it's the same for knives too. To really enjoy the outdoors, the longer we stay away from home the better but in most cases I'd say all these "big" knives are just too big to be carting except for a couple of days and even then if one is hiking and camping and carrying all this stuff, let alone a bow maybe for hunting etc. then who will really honestly justify the big knife over a smaller one? No one talks about how easy it is to cut these days, only how easy it is to hack through some car door or lever something and if these things can not be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the viewer then sales may plummet. Of course this is a certain demographic and i would argue not the buying demographic. But there comes a time when we should all go through the "collection" and as the misses likes to say to me "De clutter"! LOL.

@@BushCampingTools 100% agree, buddy. It‘s like with the „bug out bags“ or the „EDC‘s“ we see everywhere now. The people are carrying kg‘s of bullshit around all the time. I saw bug out bags on YT with a weight of 18kg! How stupid is this? When it really comes to a true situation of staying alive you will be very lucky if you don‘t have to carry more than just a few kg‘s. And if your real survival stuff is about 8kg including tarp/tent, sleeping stuff, clothes, first aid, cooking equipment and maybe 1l of water you will not accept a knife with a weight of 500g /+ - So the Sami people or the native people from the North are right with their choices of blades: Short, light and easy to carry and to care about. And they live with their families and animals outside the whole year, even in strongest winter. Like you I also had a lot of different „hobbies“ in the past where I have spent thousands of Euro‘s. High End Hifi, motorcycles, car‘s, synthesizer & recording etc. . I sold it all. Today the most precious thing I own is my time and I‘m not willing to spend it for something that is just based on a mindf..k (if you know what I mean). I want something true and real and so today I only think about gear and equipment if it helps me to not think about gear in the future anymore. Experience, knowledge and skills about how to act in nature are so much more important. And in the end I don‘t want to be a slave of stuff. I also have to be able to find my way if I would have a small Opinel with me.

Gives me zero chills. Especially when I look at the price I feel like someone who should get fooled. Look at the Viper Borr - released years ago. Comes in D2 and has a lot of similarities with the "new" ER. Prise is less than 40% of the Sethlans. And it's a real quality product. What are we talking about?
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, no doubt about it, Viper and producing great knives. For me the Viper borr did not have to have such a big choil and waste cutting length for such cool drop point (Just MHO). If one needs to get closer to the blade, make the handle a bit shorter (hence proper hunting knives don't have huge handles), provide good gimping?. Sometimes I wonder if this is really done for the law/authorities and not the user as the actual knife edge is shorter than the standard definition of the length? (ok that's another debate LOL). Yes the shape (excluding the choil) is similar but so are the myriad of bicycle frames out there from the myriad of high end manufacturers. We see it all the time. I guess we are used to ER making blade shapes which are different from the rest. But again over the years they have copped flak about this and "why don't they just make a damn good drop point?" Well of course they did and do but for certain forums and these knives are not available to the general public or rather non forum members (usually). The borr is a much bigger knife and I hate the scabbard as it looks like they just made it on the spot and it looks like some cheap gun holster? for such a cool knife design. Just two weeks ago almost, I had some experience in a factory watching how leather scabbards are made and I can say now that the scabbard for the Borr would take no longer than 20-30min labour from the thinning of the hide, stamping, sewing and staining of the leather to completion. This is normal but it is also where Viper help make their margin on a simple sheath. I won't argue, the D2 pricing point may prove an issue for them but then again if they are using D2 from a European manufacturer and not an OS one, this will make a difference in cost, a big difference. I will inquire. As always thanks for your honest comments!

@diderichlangmannen 4 жыл бұрын
@@BushCampingTools You're right. Sure - there are always pro's and con's and I'm sure that the ER is the better knife - but not 3 times better! And yes - the scabbard from ER is better but this is also not enough to justify this price. I'm also not sure about what you said about the D2 from Viper! Do you think the price from the Borr is based on a cheap steel? Think about Lionsteel with their M3 in Niolox, the M4 in M390 or their knives in Sleipner! All high quality European steels and all their knives are much cheaper than the Sethlans - even the excellent M7 with a greta scabbard costs nearly half the price of the ER! I do not question the quality of ER. I know that they are fantastic producer and their knives are some of the best you can get. But their prices are too high and the Sethlans is by far the last victim of their crazy calculation.
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 4 жыл бұрын
@@diderichlangmannen The points you make are all valid for sure with those comparisons. I can't remember what I paid for my M7 at the time (I do know I got a bit of a discount for buying many products-it was from a physical shop- so that doesn't really count I guess). No I wasn't meaning that Viper acquire their D2 from OS but was just saying if they or others did then there would be substantial savings on raw material costs. As regards the M7 cost to manufacture, I would take a guess that it is much cheaper to manufacture, less parts to assemble and a one piece grip (very well thought out). There is a lot of cutting and stitching going on in the Sethlans scabbard assembly, melting webbing ends to not fray etc. I don't have my M7 in front of me right now but i'd say there are def less things in it's construction. Don't worry I know you're not questioning ER's product quality. Also I don't know if the M7 (just to continue to use it as an example) is hand sharpened or done robotically, if the latter is true then this too would have a bearing upon costing. I don't know.

The company is only creating the headline with the name or title of it‘s product but the real story is created by you. So even the aspect and the budget for Marketing (which is in many cases the highest factor in the calculation of a product) is lower because they don‘t have to realise and pay for all these activities because you are doing this for them for free! Did they ever gave something back to you?

@@diderichlangmannen You're right mate, it is cheap advertising for all manufacturers with the advent if you like of the social media, first i guess we started with blogs then everyone wanted video, hence I'm sure many lovers of many products have put many paid businesses out of business. The basic cost for a 3 minute video for an advertisement is about 10K plus for me (that's a cheapo production no fancy AE etc. That I can not compete with against the likes of others (including me!) so the channel gets turned into a bit of "love of it" and I must find the reasons to continue and how to finance it. For example, since you sort of inquire (I want to keep my private life separate), the caving stuff u see is but a small 5 minute break underground for a filming project which I hope the footage will sell and pay for all of my expenses plus more. That same series of trips (not finished) also was part of when I filmed some stuff for the Sethlans. So I try and combine my love of this stuff with my love of caving to make the goulash if u like! The psychology of buying is a very interesting one. Recently, I was accused of spending money ridiculously because I wear two watches. My reply was, one I bought second hand from Ebay as I could not afford it brand new. I lusted after this watch, wasting hours and hours reading about it, looking at pictures, deciphering Japanese language from Citizen pages etc., until I satisfied that lust with a secondhand one in mint condition from the bay. The second watch was a gift from my mum. I guess if we really want something badly enough as you say we will find a way to get it.

Can't help but agree that this knife is to expensive. I wonder what they would have asked for it sold naked. As pricing is now, I'd rather go for Selvans for a bush/ survival knife. Part from that, i also wish ER would go for Elmax instead of D2.
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 2 жыл бұрын
Totally fair enough and that's why i never mention price or discuss price or say one should go ou and get it because it's cheap; because everyone has a different perspective of what is "expensive to what is cheap" dependent upon their "disposable income" because, let's face it these things today are really not necessary in society which sits in front of tablets, phones, computer screens, more of a "want" and for want's we all have to justify them LOL. As to why they don't go over to Elmax, they would have to change out all of their tooling I think because the big advantage for working with Elmax if i understand the documents correctly, manufacturers can mill products in the the hardened state , post heat treatment without loss of tempering regimes. If that is really true then this would decrease the overall longevity of their tools and also my guess is that D2is a whole lot cheaper than ELMAX but I could be totally wrong there.

Yeah, like the other two posters said, nice, but pretty spendy (especially if you are in Europe and have to pay their extortionate VAT). The lack of sharpening choil and that plunge line, actually irk me more than the price. We know ER have sharpening choils on some if their knives - would be good to know their reasoning not to include one here (rhetorically speaking) Not a dig at ER - Spyderco are one of the worst offenders (I have 3, none have sharpening choils).
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 4 жыл бұрын
No, no, these are valid points u make re having a small choil present/absent. This was one thing which also "irked", me regarding the Task J too as u ill note, it too doesn't have a sharpening choil, although later I supposed (in the case of the Task J) one could just use that part to strike a steel as the spine was not really acute enough for that job. I know they supplied a striker but I usually chuck those things out and rely upon something more capable. The European VAT is always an issue and while as u know I never discuss price on the channel, this is like the old thing of say an Apple computer is XX dollars in the states but by the time it is sold in Europe the XX becomes 2X XX! Hence the common plane trip returning with a laptop! I will inquire regarding your question.

@@BushCampingTools I'm in New Zealand so get my gear from Lamina VAT free (and free shipping). The have enough sales every year, that ER can be had cheaper a couple of times a year too. I've been very tempted to get one, but not yet bitten the bullet. Lamnia have an exclusive on several different versions of the Shrapnel One just now, if you don't like the standard colour combo (that you reviewed 2 years ago). Almost got a BF1 for EDC, I liked the deep carry clip - until I saw how much it added to the thickness of the overall knife. Was worried that I'd take too much paint off the car if I accidentally brushed up against it.

Francis, you're always gathering them mushrooms and as a useless modern society would-starve-without-supermarket kid I have to wonder: How can you tell if it's still good or already spoiled? They totally look the same to me.^^ Thankfully I don't really like the taste of mushrooms anyway, so the risk of me poisoning myself is basically zero.

LOl, good question. But before i answer it, I'll tell u a funny (I think it's funny) story. A mate and myself were out hunting one day, in fact all day and not even a sign of anything other than a nice walk in some forests when we came across a stunning patch to top dollar mushrooms. We were some distance from the vehicle and about 300km from home, so not that far but I said" "man we have to take these" as we hadn't gotten any game. He replied two ways, firstly by threatening me that I would poison him and myself so there was no chance and secondly by running ahead and kicking as many of them down as possible! LOL I still remember it to this day! Ok so seriously, I started many years ago on a couple of family trips just picking the regular old field mushrooms like the supermarket ones but far tastier. Then many years passed (including all the hunting years and never taking any!) until I met some Polish people who became very good friends with me and them in turn with all of my friends. They showed us what was good and what wasn't and how to prepare them. All of our climbing trips and or caving trips we always picked mushrooms off the back of those trips and sometimes even just dedicated trips looking for mushrooms, no hunting and no climbing. Since then kicking around with Russian friends, Bulgarian and French friends and work colleagues I learnt much more on the subject. Plus the original degree I did a lot of microbiology and was fascinated by them. I guess if you don't like them there is no way to accidentally poison yourself but if u should ever change your mind, best to learn it from some hardcore Europeans who do it all the time. It is possible to get sick as apposed to being poisoned and tis has happened to me only twice both with good edibles but there can be variations dependent upon what they are growing on, it's rare but it can happen, just a bout of the runs nothing more. Although the deadliest of them, one will die as there is ZERO antidote. That's a mushroom u learn about from the start. Luckily it is not known to grow in Australia but of course is found elsewhere around the world, especially in the northern hemisphere.
